Walter White and Hannah Blazey

Thorpe St Andrew Parish Church
The church, which was once reported to be the smallest church in Norfolk, was the subject of a Vestry meeting in 1862. It was decided at this meeting that the church needed to be enlarged and then in 1864 it was a agreed that a new one should be built. The new church was consecrated on 31st May 1866 by the Bishop of Norwich [just in time for Walter and Hannah's wedding the following year]. The remains of the medieval church still exist in front of the Parish Church.

Walter White (b. 16 Nov 1845 in Thorpe, Norfolk), youngest son of William White and Ann Francis, married Hannah Blazey (b. 17 Jun 1845 in Heigham, Norfolk), daughter of Francis Stephen Blazey and Hannah Minns on Sunday, 31 Mar 1867 at the Parish church of St Andrew, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich. Witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Blazey, the bride's brother; Hannah White, the bridegroom's sister and an Elizabeth Blazey (this could have been Samuel's wife, or probably more likely was Hannah's younger sister).

Walter and Hannah had two children:
  1. Walter White b. 1869 S Qtr in BLOFIELD UNION Vol 04B Page 179
  2. Laura Elizabeth White b. 15 Oct 1870 (1870 D Quarter in BLOFIELD UNION Volume 04B Page 185) - who was my great-grandmother.
On 4 Jun 1870, The Norfolk Chronicle and Norwich Gazette reported that Walter White, of Thorpe St. Andrew's, gardener, was summoned by Hannah White, his wife, for unlawfully assaulting her on the 25th ult. [i.e. the previous month] Complainant said that she asked her husband for the money to pay the gas rate with, on which he flew into a violent passion, and beat and kicked her in the back. Defendant said he might have kicked her, but not to have hurt her, but it was under great provocation. Defendant was fined 5s, and 15s costs. [Hannah will have been ~4 months pregnant with Laura at the time.]

In 1871, Walter White (26) Gardener, Hannah White (26), Walter White (1) and Laura White (5 months) were living at Thorpe Grove, Thunder Lane, Thorpe St Andrew. In the next-door household was a Robert Knivett (53), also a gardener. Also living at Thorpe Grove, was William Birkbeck (1832–1897), banker and landowner, whose former property in Thunder Lane, now named The Cottage is currently a pub and restaurant. One presumes these gardeners were employed on Birkbeck's then quite large estate.

Walter White, Gardener, of Globe Street, Heigham, Norwich, died, aged 26 on 5 Jan 1872 (M Qtr in NORWICH Vol 04B Page 130) from Smallpox. The death certificate states that H White [Hannah] was present at his death.

Then Hannah White (29), Dressmaker, Widow, daughter of Francis Blazey (deceased), remarried to William Cooper (34) Brush Maker Journeyman, Widower, on 5 July 1875 at the Register Office, District of Norwich. (It is said that, during the late 19th century, the Norwich Register Office was situated on Bethel Street). Both gave their address as Manchester Buildings, Union Place, Heigham. William left the spaces for his father blank.

William Cooper (b. 19 Dec 1839, bap. 19 Jan 1840 at St Martin at Palace, Norwich), was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Cooper, Spinster. When he had married for the first time, at the age of 19, to Emily Berry, daughter of Swithin Berry and Richendra Wright, at St Benedict's Church, Norwich, on 25 Jul 1859, he had also left the spaces for his father blank, but had then listed himself as William Wells Cooper, Brush maker. From this, we may surmise that his father may have been a Mr Wells. In 1861, William and Emily Cooper had been lodgers in Upper Westwick Street, St Benedict, Norwich; in 1871 they were living in Old Palace Road, Heigham, Norwich. Emily Cooper died, at 33, in 1874 J Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 100.

But just six months after their second marriage, Hannah Cooper, wife of William Cooper, a Brush maker, died, aged 30, at Union Place, Heigham, on 9 Jan 1876 (1876 M Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 104), from Phthisis (Tuberculosis). The informant, who made her mark, was 'Hannah Blazey, Mother, Present at death'. Sadly, this confirmed what seemed most likely, that Hannah had died in this period, because in 1881, both of her children, Walter and Laura, were living with their maternal grandmother.

As yet, I've not identified further records for William Cooper.

George Pocock and Elizabeth Blazey

Church of St James Norlands, Sunday, 29 April, 2007
Photo available for reuse under this Creative Commons licence.

George Pocock (bap. 25 Feb 1844 in Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire), Widower, Engineer, son of William Pocock, Blacksmith, and Sarah Turnbull, married Elizabeth Blazey (b. 6 Oct 1847 in Heigham, Norwich, Norfolk), Spinster, daughter of Francis Stephen Blazey and Hannah Minns, on 26 Mar 1883 at St James' Church, Norlands. Both gave their address as 181 Holland Road. Witnesses were Francis Blazey and Alice Blazey, Elizabeth's eldest brother and youngest sister. This was George's third marriage.

George Pocock had first married Louisa Matilda Crooke (bap. 22 Oct 1837 in Kilsby, Northamptonshire), daughter of James Crooke and Frances Colledge, at St Edmund's, Northampton on 19 Jun 1866. They had four children:
  1. William James Pocock b. 9 Aug 1867 (1867 S Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 06B Page 468), bap. 12 Apr 1868 at St Peter's Collegiate ChurchWolverhampton
  2. George Henry Pocock b. 1870 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 170, bap. 16 Nov 1871 at St. Paul, Sculcoates. Inexplicably baptised again on 5 Mar 1876, also at St. Paul, Sculcoates. On both baptisms, his father George Pocock was described as a Fitter and the family's address was given as 16 Campbell Terrace. (Campbell Terrace was a residential row (typical Victorian terrace) located on Rodney Street in Hull. Rodney Street was located near the St Andrew's Dock/Hessle Road area of Hull, traditionally associated with the fishing community. Damaged during WWII, the area was demolished in the 1970s.)
  3. Jeffrey Pocock b. 1875 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 193, bap. 28 May 1875 at St. Paul, Sculcoates. Died in 1875 J Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 136, the infant, from Rodney Street, was buried on 3 Jun 1875 at All Saints Church, Sculcoates.
  4. Kate Pocock b. 1877 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 207, bap. 18 Feb 1877 at St. Paul, Sculcoates. Died 1877 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 127 and again the infant from Rodney Street was buried on 23 Feb 1877 at All Saints Church, Sculcoates.
In 1871, George Pocock (27) Engine Fitter from Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire was living in Blenheim Terrace, Sculcoates (which was in Norfolk Street), with Louisa Pocock (~27) from Kilsby; William J Pocock (3) from Wolverhampton; George H Pocock (0) from Hull and Charles Pocock (25) Engine Fitter from Berkhampstead, Herts (George's brother).

Louisa Matilda Pocock died in 1877 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 127, with her age listed as 33, consistent with that listed on the census, so I have a feeling she'd pretended to her husband (and got away with it) that she was the same age as him. She will have been in her 40th year. Louisa Matilda Pocock, of Rodney Street, was also buried on 23 Feb 1877 at All Saints Church, Sculcoates, at the same time as her infant daughter.

In 1878, in Hull, George Pocock married Catharine Ann Thornton (bap. 3 Oct 1852 at St Martin-cum-Gregory's Church, Micklegate, York), daughter of William Thornton and Mary Thompson. They had one daughter:
  1. Kate Louisa Pocock b. 1879 S Qtr in SCULCOATES Vol 09D Page 191
But Catherine Ann Pocock died, aged 27, in 1880 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 145 and was buried in Sculcoates on 1 Aug 1880.

In 1881, George Pocock (37) Engine Fitter, Widower, was still living at 16, Campbell Terrace, Sculcoates, Yorkshire, with William H (sic) Pocock (13) and George H Pocock (10). (Living next door at 17, Campbell Terrace were Catherine Ann's parents, William and Mary Thornton and their son Frederic.) Listed as Catherine, George and Catherine's daughter, Kate Louisa Pocock (2) was in the household of Frederick Marrow (20) and Alice Marrow (18) listed as their Niece, at 6, Carnarvon Terrace, West Parade, Kingston upon Hull. (Frances Alice, who married in 1879, was Catherine Ann's sister).

George and his third wife Elizabeth Blazey added three sons:
  1. Charles Frank Pocock b. 22 Feb 1884 (1884 M Qtr in BERKHAMSTED Vol 03A Page 569), bap. 23 Mar 1884 in Berkhamsted
  2. Ernest Edward Pocock b. 20 Jun 1887 (1887 S Qtr in BERKHAMSTED Vol 03A Page 577), bap. 24 Jul 1887 at St Peter, Great Berkhamsted
  3. Percy Reginald Pocock b. 17 Jun 1889 (1889 S Qtr in BERKHAMSTED Vol 03A Page 593), bap. 14 Jul 1889 at St Peter, Great Berkhamsted
In 1891, George Pocock (47) Engine Fitter was living in Holiday Street, Berkhampstead with Elizabeth Pocock (~42) from Norwich, Norfolk; William J Pocock (23) Printer; George H Pocock (20) Printer's assistant; Kate Pocock (11), Charles F Pocock (7), Edward E Pocock (3) and Percy R Pocock (1).

In 1901, at 10 Holiday Street, Berkhampstead (a very elegant early-mid Victorian semi-detached property, so I'd be confident this was the same house they were living in at that time) with George Pocock (57) Engine Fitter; Elizabeth Pocock (52), Charles Frank Pocock (17) Learner in Post Office; Ernest Edward Pocock (13) Office Boy; and Percy Reginald Pocock (11).

Elizabeth Pocock died in 1907 M Quarter in BERKHAMSTED Volume 03A Page 537, with her age listed as 58. This is consistent with the ages she was listed as on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census so I think her birth year was just wrongly remembered. She will have been in her 60th year.

In 1911, George Pocock (67) Widower, Engine Fitter out of work, was at 45 Castle Street, Berkhamsted, with Ernest Edward Pocock (23) Clerk; Percy Reginald Pocock (21) Hair dresser and Louisa Mathewes (37) House keeper.

In 1921, George Pocock (78) Father was a visitor in the household of eldest son, William, at 14, Fanshawe Street, Hertford, Hertfordshire.

George Pocock died, aged 79, in 1923 D Quarter in ROMFORD Volume 04A Page 428. (Second son, George Henry Pocock then lived in Romford).

Henrich Schumacher and Alice Hannah Blazey

Redfern Street showing Court House and Post Office, Redfern (NSW)

A part-Anglicised Henry Schumacher (b. ~1859), Baker, son of Frederick Schumacher, Smith, married Alice Hannah Blazey (b. 6 Feb 1865), Servant, daughter of Samuel Blazey and Elizabeth Wiggins, at St Thomas, Baroness Road, Bethnal Green, London on 17 Mar 1888. Witnesses to their marriage appear to have been an Adolf Fritz and Elizabeth Theresa Emily Duke.

Various records point to the couple having thirteen children:
  1. Caroline Alice Schumacher b. 1889 S Qtr in GREENWICH Vol 01D 958
  2. Mary Elizabeth Schumacher b. 1890 D Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 01C Page 319
  3. Heinrich Friedrich Schumacher b. 1892 M Qtr in ST GEORGE IN THE EAST Vol 01C Page 398. Died 1892 J Qtr Vol 01C Page 245
  4. George Schumacher b. 1893 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW. Died 1895, also in Waterloo, NSW with parents listed as Heinrich and Alice.
  5. Amelia Schumacher b. 1895 in Newtown, New South Wales
  6. Francis Joseph Schumacher b. 1896 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
  7. Henry Stephen Schumacher b. 1897 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
  8. Alice Paulina Schumacher b. 1900 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
  9. Frederick Ludwig Schumacher b. 1901 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
  10. Hilda Lilian Schumacher b. 1 Jun 1902 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
  11. William J Schumacher b. 1903 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW. Died in 1903, also in Waterloo, NSW, with parents listed as Henry and Alice
  12. Rose Nell Schumacher b. 1905 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
  13. Alfred Louis Schumacher b. 1909 in Waterloo, Sydney, NSW
The UK GRO birth registrations list the mother's maiden name as BLAZEY. The Australian birth records give their father's name as Henry/Heinrich F (or some variation or misspelling thereof) and mother's name as Alice.

In 1891, Heinrich Schumacher (32) Skin Dyer from Failsbach, Germany, was living at 1, Mary Ann Street, St George in the East, with Alice Schumacher (27) birthplace listed as New Cross, Surrey (Alice was born in Witney, Oxfordshire, so this may be where she was previously living and working); Caroline Schumacher (22 months) and Mary Schumacher (7 months), plus three boarders: Christian Kress (26), William Rudolph (26) and Antony Scruse (31), all also Skin Dyers, who were from various towns in Germany.

Then on 16 Feb 1893, H Schumacher (34), Elise (sic) Schumacher (29), Karoline (sic) Schumacher (3) and Mary Schumacher (1) were passengers on the SS Thermopylae, who embarked in London, bound for Sydney, Australia, where they arrived in the April of that year.

In 1913, Henry and Alice Schumacher are on the Australian Electoral Roll in Collins Street, Botany, NSW, with Henry listed as a Baker.

Henry Frederick Schumacher died on 8 Dec 1916 in Redfern, New South Wales and is buried at Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park (Botany Cemetery), Matraville, New South Wales. The record of Henry's death list his parents as Frederick and Catherine, but I've been unable to locate his birth.

The six daughters of Henrich Schumacher and Alice Hannah Blazey. Photo via Karen Lewis.
Alice Hannah Schumacher died on 22 Jan 1932, also in Redfern, New South Wales and is buried with her late husband. The record of her death confirms her father's name as Samuel and her mother's as Elizabeth. The last will and testament of Alice Hannah Schumacher, of Collins Street, Botany, Widow, dated 29 Oct 1930, appointed her children as executors. She directed her daughter Mary Elizabeth Humphry to "Draw my insurance money and pay all funeral expenses"; also that, "My house and home to be left as it is till my daughter Rose Nell Fraser Widow marries again [she didn't] nothing is to be taken from the home unless they all agree. Mrs Paulina Woolley is to stay in the home as long as she wish to she will be risponsible (sic) for all rates and taxes if at any time they wish to break up the home and sell the house no furniture is to be sold the girls can divide what there is if the house is sold." Then bequeaths: "£100 is to be given to my son Francis Joseph Schumacher; £100 to Alfred Louis Schumacher; £100 to Caroline Humphry and Mary Elizabeth Humphry to divide the rest: give Henry Stephen Schumacher £5 - also Frederick Ludwig Schumacher £5 - and to divide the balance between the girls names Amelia Barlow, Alice Paulina Woolley, Hilda Lilian Kenward, Caroline Humphry, Mary Humphry, Rose N Fraser, Widow."

The marriages of their ten surviving children:
  1. Henry William Humphry married Caroline Alice Schumacher in Waterloo, New South Wales, in 1908.
  2. And Frederick Charles Humphry married Mary Elizabeth Schumacher, also in Waterloo, New South Wales, in 1910, in yet another case of two brothers marrying two sisters.
  3. Harold Barlow married [Amelia] Queenie Schumacher, in 1913.
  4. Cecil Augustus Woolley married Alice Paulina Schumacher in 1916;
  5. Henry Stephen Schumacher married Irene Eleanor Free in 1918;
  6. In 1924, David Fraser married Rose Nell Schumacher
  7. Frederick Ludwig Schumacher married Lily Rita Day; in 1925
  8. Sydney Victor Kenward married Hilda Lilian Schumacher in Parkes, NSW
  9. In 1932, Alfred Louis Schumacher married Melba Olive Myrtle Barker.
  10. In 1936 Francis Joseph Schumacher married Annie Webber in Redfern.
In 1935, the Australia Electoral Roll lists Henry William Humphry, driver, Caroline Alice Humphry and Alice Annie Humphry at Dolly Cottage, Collins Street, Botany; Frederick Charles Humphrey, wool sorter, Mary Elizabeth Humphry and Henry Frederick Humphey at Sono, Collins Street, Botany; Cecil Augustus Woolley, collar maker, Alice Paulina Woolley, Francis Joseph Schumacher, tanner, and Rose Nell Fraser as living at Francis Cottage, Collins Street, Botany; Frederick Ludwig Schumacher, tanner, and Lily Rita Schumacher were in Bourke Street; Henry Stephen Schumacher, wool scourer, and Irene Eleanor Schumacher were at 3 Spring Street. Alfred Blazey and Margaret Jane Webb

Alfred Blazey (b. 8 Oct 1869 in Drayton, Norfolk), second son of Samuel Blazey and Elizabeth Wiggins, married Margaret Jane Webb (b. 2 Feb 1877 in Battersea, London), daughter of Frederick Potter Webb and Alice Mary Allen, on 24 Feb 1901, at St Peter's Church, Black Lion LaneHammersmith. Witnesses were Frederick Potter Webb, bride's father and Eleanor Wood.

At the time of the 1901 census, Alfred Blazey (32) Unemployed, and wife Margaret (24) were living at 15, Standish Road, Hammersmith.

Then, on 1 Nov 1906, Alfred and Margaret Blazey embarked, in Liverpool, on the RMS Empress of Britain, bound for Quebec, Canada.

Alfred and Margaret Blazey next surface, on the 1911 Census of Canada, living in Red DeerAlberta, described as settlers.

The couple didn't have any children of their own, but took in a child, who was thereafter known as Frank Blazey. From FamilySearch, "Frank was born in 1911 in Red Deer Alberta. He was the son of Arthur Sheraton Reed and Jane Thomas. Jane passed shortly after his birth, and Frank was given to childless neighbors to look after while his father and brothers re-arranged their life. Frank was taken by Alfred Blazey and Margaret Webb to Ontario without his family's knowledge and was "lost" until making contact with them again in about 1965. He was overjoyed to be re-united with his 4 brothers, and many other family members after being raised as a seemingly "only child".

Margaret Blazey (52) Housewife, sails, again (appears to have been travelling alone) from Liverpool to Quebec, this time on the SS Letitia, on 19 Oct 1929, giving 10 Piggot Street, Limehouse, London as her last address in the UK.

Alfred Blazey, Painter and Decorator, of 99 Barton Avenue, Toronto, died, aged 63, on 24 Aug 1933 and was buried, on 26 Aug 1933 at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. Cause of death was given as Carcinoma of Stomach (Stomach cancer) with Endocarditis as a contributing factor.

Margaret Blazey (née Webb) died on 27 Jun 1962, aged 85 and is also buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto (Plot P, Sec. 23, Lot 9).

The death notice in The Toronto Star for their adopted (kidnapped) son Frank Blazey, mentions brothers, Art Reed, Creston, B.C. and Ernie Reed, Red Deer, Alberta, and and a cousin, Ernest Blazey (son of Frederick John Blazey and grandson of William Blazey, Alfred's father, Samuel's youngest brother.)

Memorial for Alfred Blazey and Margaret Jane Webb

PS: It really is a small world

Alfred Blazey's brother, Francis Blazey - both cousins of my paternal grandmother - had ended up in the very next street to where various members of my maternal grandfather's family had lived in London's East End, which was surprising enough given that - so we thought - the two sides of my family came from very different parts of the UK and Ireland. That Alfred's - my paternal grandmother's cousin - final address should be little more than a ten minute drive from where my maternal grandfather's grandfather, Dan Tompson, had lived and died only nine years earlier, is astonishing.

St Saviour's Church, Knightsbridge. Photograph by John Salmon.

William Blazey (b. 7 Nov 1853 in Heigham, Norfolk), youngest son of Francis Stephen Blazey and Hannah Minns, married Mary Anne Clarke (b. 1852 in Furneux Pelham, Hertfordshire), daughter of Joseph Clarke and Elizabeth Randle, at the Church of St SaviourUpper Chelsea, on 16 Sep 1877. William was then a Servant, of 151 Pavillion RoadKnightsbridge. Mary Anne listed her father as Joseph Clark, Farm Steward. Witnesses were William Clarke, probably Mary Ann's older brother, and Elizabeth Lasthman.

  10. Charles William Blazey b. 30 May 1895 (1895 J Quarter in FULHAM Volume 01A Page 344), bap. 29 Jul 1895 at St Peter's Fulham
All of the birth registrations have the mother's maiden name CLARKE

Obviously, Alice Mary and William George, born in the same quarter of 1892, were dizygotic (fraternal) twins, of whom only Alice survived (to 100).

In 1881, William Blazey (27) Cab proprietor from Norwich, Norfolk and Mary A Blazey (29) from Hertforshire, were living at 16, Trinity Mews, St George Hanover Square, Westminster. While I cannot account for the absense of Francis William (2), neither can I find him listed elsewhere.

In 1891, William Blazey (37) Omnibus driver; Mary A Blazey (38), Francis Blazey (12), Maud Blazey (10), Frederick Blazey (8), Annie Blazey (7), Florence Blazey (5) and Sydney Blazey (2) were living in Fulham.

In 1901, at 37, Bishops Road, Fulham, London were William Blazey (46) Omnibus driver; Mary Anne Blazey (48), Francis W Blazey (22) Builder's clerk; Maud E Blazey (20) Barmaid (retired); Frederick J Blazey (18) Stock broker's clerk; Annie E Blazey (17) Dressmaker; Florence E Blazey (15), Sydney G Blazey (12), Alice M Blazey (9), Lily A Blazey (7), Charles W Blazey (5) and Charles E Hall (35) Lodger, Married, Omnibus driver.

Then the first Mrs Mary Anne Blazey (née Clarke - with a final E) died, aged 54, in 1905 J Quarter in FULHAM Volume 01A Page 215.

On 15 Oct 1905, at Saint Peter's Church, IslingtonWilliam Blazey (52) Widower, Driver, son of Francis Blazey (deceased) married again, incredibly, to another Mary Ann Clark (41) (no final E's) Spinster of 71 Prebend Street, Islington, daughter of William Clark, Carman. William Clark was also from Norfolk. She brought with her an illegitimate son, John William McCallam Clark b. 1903 S Quarter in ST MARYLEBONE Volume 01A Page 540.

In 1911, William Blazey (57) Bus Driver from Norfolk; Mary Ann Blazey (47) from Islington; Lily Blazey (17), Charles Blazey (15), William McCallam Clark (7), David Howe (46) Lodger, Motor bus Driver and Lily Holmes (22) General Domestic Servant, Visitor were at 37 Racton Road, Fulham. Alice Blazey (20) was Under Housemaid in the household of Cecil Fane (54) at 27 Beaufort Gardens, Kensington (a stone's throw from Harrods Department Store.)

In 1921, William Blazey (67) Taxi driver, Out of Work, was living alone at 5, Adeney Road, Hammersmith and described himself as Widowed. However, just over a mile away at 25, Gratton Road, West Kensington, were Mary Ann Blazey (56) Daily woman, listed as married, with her son, John William Clark (17) Clothes Shop Assistant. Had William not used 'Widowed', this could have had a simple explanation, but as it is, it looks as if they'd separated.

Mary Anne Blazey (59) died in 1924 M Quarter in KENSINGTON Vol 01A Page 291. There was the extraneous E on her middle name this time.

William Blazey (80) died in 1934 J Qtr in CAMBERWELL Vol 01D Page 640.

Samuel Blazey and Elizabeth Wiggins

Ducklington Duckpond
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Dave Price - geograph.org.uk/p/3483077
On
Fritillary Sunday with St Bartholomew's Church.

Samuel Blazey (bap. 7 Nov 1841 in Heigham, Norfolk), son of Francis Stephen Blazey and Hannah Minns, married Elizabeth Wiggins (bap. 14 Apr 1844 in Ducklington, Oxfordshire), daughter of Alfred Wiggins and Anne Adams, on 11 Sep 1864, at St Bartholomew’s church, Ducklington-with-Hardwick, Oxfordshire. Samuel was described as a Railway Servant, residing in Witney; Elizabeth, who was (20) under age at the time, was resident in Ducklington. Witnesses to the marriage were John Wright (possibly a cousin) and Maria Blazey (wife of Samuel's brother, Francis Robert Blazey).

Samuel and Elizabeth had five children:
  1. Alice Hannah Blazey b. 6 Feb 1865 (1865 M Quarter in WITNEY Volume 03A Page 651), bap. 5 Jun 1878 at Holy Trinity, Heigham, Norwich
  2. Francis Blazey bap. 18 Oct 1867 in Drayton, Norfolk
  3. Alfred Blazey b. 8 Oct 1869 (1869 D Quarter in SAINT FAITHS Volume 04B Page 98), bap. 26 May 1870 in Drayton, Norfolk
  4. William Blazey b. 1872 in Worcester, bap. Whit Sunday 24 May 1874, at 2 years old, at St Bartholomew’s, Ducklington
  5. Elizabeth Eliza Blazey, b. 8 Jan 1874 (1874 M Quarter in WORCESTER Volume 06C Page 346), bap. 8 Mar 1874, in Worcester
The mother's maiden name on Alice Hannah's birth registration was correctly listed as WIGGINS, on Alfred's, WIGGENS and on Elizabeth Eliza's WIGGIN. There don't seem to be GRO registrations for Francis or William.

In 1871, listed as James Blazer (sic) (29) Engine Driver from Norfolk; Elizabeth (28) from Ducklington; Alice (6) born in Witney; Francis (4) and Alfred (1), were at Norwich Upper Road, Drayton, Norfolk.

Elizabeth Blazey, aged 30, died, in Q1 of 1874 - can probably surmise why - and was buried on 18 Jan 1874, at St. Paul's Parish, Worcester.

In 1881, Samuel Blazey (35), widowed, Fireman on Railway, was living at 3, Duke Street, Heigham, Norwich (Duke's Cross Street (subsequently renamed as Manchester Street) with his widowed mother. Alfred (11) was living with them. Alice Blazey (17) was a General Servant to Joseph Clayden, Lodging house keeper at 16, Westbourne Place, St George Hanover Square; Francis (13), was living with his Aunt and Uncle, Joseph and Eliza Tiff (Samuel's sister Eliza) at 9, Union Terrace, Kensington, London, where he was Shop boy to greengrocer. William Blazey (7) Grandson was living with his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Ann Wiggins in Ducklington, Witney; While Elizabeth Eliza (7), was living with John and Hannah Versey, who were originally from Devon, in Worcester, described as 'Adopted Daughter'.

In 1891, Samuel Blazey (49) Fireman, Railway and daughter, Elizabeth (17) Tailoress, were living with Samuel's mother, Hannah (78) at 19 Manchester Street, Norwich. Alice Hannah had married in 1888; Francis Blazey (25) and Alfred Blazey (21) Dock Labourers, were living with their aunt and uncle, Joseph and Eliza Tiff, in Kensington, London; William Blazey (19) was again living with his grandparents, Alfred and Ann Wiggins, in Ducklington.

In the press of 14 May 1892, Samuel Blazey of Union Place, Norwich, a Great Eastern Railway employee, was reported as giving evidence at the inquest into the death of Robert George Buckingham (18) who died when hit by a ballast train running from Norwich to Cromer. Samuel Blazey was the Engine Driver's, mate and fireman on the train. Blazey said that Hubbard [driver] had just shut off steam before pulling up at Worstead, three-quarters of a mile from the station, and witness was putting on the injector in order to get more water into the boiler, when only four or five yards in front of the buffers he thought he saw a lad. Witness flew to the brake, and his mate promptly stopped the train. The inquest found that there was no one to blame.

In 1901, Samuel Blazey (57) Railway Labourer, was living at 19 Manchester Street, Norwich, with his mother, Hannah (90).

In 1908, Samuel Blazey appeared in the local City and County directory at 19 Manchester Street, listed as a Chimney Sweeper.

Samuel does not appear on either the 1911 or 1921 Census, however, he died in 1925 M Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 161, at 83.

Herbert Fleming Trevail and Alice Maud Stanley Blazey

Kensington: St. John the Baptist Church, Holland Road
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Dr Neil Clifton - geograph.org.uk/p/3161496

Herbert Fleming Trevail (b. 1877 in Lambeth), son of Charles Trevail and Mary Fleming, married Alice Maud Stanley Blazey (b. 21 Dec 1875 in Dinapore, India), daughter of Francis Robert Blazey and Louisa Susan Stanley, both of 155 Holland Road, Kensington, on 5 Sep 1898, at St John the Baptist church, Holland Road, Kensington, London. Witnesses were Francis Robert Blazey, the bride's father and Edwin Fleming Trevail, the groom's brother.

Various records point to Herbert and Alice having seven children:
  1. Daisy Trevail b. 1899 S Quarter in LAMBETH Volume 01D Page 464. (Died 1899 S Quarter in LAMBETH Volume 01D Page 343)
  2. Winifred Constance Stanley Trevail b. 16 Sep 1900 (1900 D Qtr in LAMBETH Vol 01D 386), bap. 4 Nov 1900 at St Anne, South Lambeth
  3. Eric Herbert Stanley Trevail b. 29 Jul 1904 (1904 S Qtr in HATFIELD Vol 03A Page 796), bap. 18 Sep 1904 in WelwynHertfordshire
  4. Stillborn child b. 25 Oct 1908 in Christchurch, New Zealand
  5. Lancelot Edwin Stanley Trevail b. 30 May 1910 in Christchurch, NZ
  6. Edna A S Trevail (if I was betting, I'd go for Alice Stanley), born and died in 1915 in Balmain North, New South Wales, Australia
  7. Carmen Joyce Stanley Trevail b. 1917 in New South Wales, Australia
The mother's maiden name on the first three in England was BLAZEY.

In 1901, Alice (25) was at her father's household at 31, Sinclair Gardens, Hammersmith, Fulham, along with her daughter, Winifred Constance Stanley Trevail, while Herbert (24) Carpenter and Joiner, was alone at what was presumably their home at 83, South Lambeth Road, Lambeth.

On 5 Aug 1908, Mr H Trevail (31), Mrs A Trevail (32), Miss W Trevail (7) and Master E Trevail (2½), embarked in London on the SS Miltiades. They were bound for Sydney, where they arrived in the September.

There is only a record of a burial of a stillborn child (gender unknown), simply listed with the surname Trevail, born 25 Oct 1908, and buried at Linwood Cemetery, Linwood, Christchurch City, Canterbury, New Zealand. That would indicate that Alice was pregnant during the voyage. This pregnancy also fits neatly into the otherwise long gap between 1904 and 1910.

They were in Lyttelton, New Zealand in 1909 - where Herbert's aunts, Ellen Higgs and Mary Ann Burn Trevail Bawden then lived - because reports in the Lyttelton Times in Oct 1909 detail that Miss Winnie Trevail was appearing in one of the principle roles in a production staged by the Garrick Juvenile Opera Company, at the Opera House there.

In 1911, Herbert Fleming Trevail, carpenter, and Alice Maud Trevail were listed on the New Zealand Electoral Rolls at 56 Stanmore Rd, Linwood, Christchurch. (Herbert's aunt, Jane Rundle Robinson, lived in Christchurch.)

Then in 1913, we find both of them listed on the Australia Electoral Rolls at Mount Victoria, Hartley, New South Wales, Australia.

Painting of the British ocean liner RMS Olympic by Fred Pansing

On 2 Feb 1927, Herbert Trevail (49), Alice (50), Lance (16) and Carmen (10) sailed from Southampton to New York on the White Star Line's RMS Olympic. They gave their last address in the UK as 62 Milton Road, Wallington, Surrey, the home of Herbert's parents. On 29 Aug 1927, they left San Francisco, bound for Sydney, on the RMS Tahiti. (Known for the Greycliffe disaster.)

Herbert must have made another visit to England, because on 1 Mar 1933, he sailed, on his own, from Southampton to Sydney on the SS Moreton Bay.

In 1935, Herbert and Alice Trevail are both listed on the Australia Electoral Rolls at 3 Griffiths Avenue, North Bondi, New South Wales

On 8 Jul 1949, Mr H. F. Trevail (72) Builder, and Mrs A. M. Trevail (74), travelled from London (Port of Tilbury) to Sydney on the SS Orontes

Herbert Fleming Trevail died on 26 Nov 1961 in Ashfield, Sydney NSW.

Alice Maud Stanley Trevail died on 9 Mar 1965, in Dade, Florida, USA.

  • In 1923 Eric H S Trevail married Miriam E Tuppling, in Balmain South, New South Wales, Australia. They went on to have two children: Conway Eric Stanley Trevail who married Beryl Pearl De Berg and Lois Winifred Stanley Trevail who married Ross Munro Brown, both in Waverley, New South Wales, Australia in 1944.
  • Lancelot Edwin Stanley Trevail married Nancy Mary Harris Matthews in Waverley, New South Wales, Australia in 1935. However, Lancelot Edwin Stanley Trevail, Casket Maker, died on 6 Sep 1947, in Bondi, NSW.
  • On 30 Sep 1937, Miss C. J. S. Trevail (21) travelled from Wellington, New Zealand to Sydney on the MS Wanganella, her profession listed as Theatrical. Carmen Joyce Stanley Trevail married Leslie Earnest Hull in Woollahra, New South Wales, Australia in 1938.

William Harman Howes and Elizabeth Eliza Blazey

St. John the Theologian, Norwich
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © Graham Hardy - geograph.org.uk/p/160332
St. John's at the junction of Ber Street and Finkelgate in
Norwich is historically known as St. John Sepulchre.

William Harman Howes (b. 15 Jul 1874), son of John Robert Howes and Martha Burrows Woodhouse married Elizabeth Eliza Blazey (b. 8 Jan 1874), daughter of Samuel Blazey and Elizabeth Wiggins, both of 3 Butchers Arms Yard, Ber St, on 2 Sep 1895 at St John Sepulchre, Norwich. Witnesses were William Walter Tillett and Martha Elizabeth Hunt, the groom's sister.

William and Elizabeth had three children:
  1. William Harman Howes b. 14 Dec 1895 (1896 M Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 119). (Unusually, no evidence of baptism.)
  2. Alice May Howes b. 31 Oct 1899 (1899 D Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 174), bap. 16 Mar 1910 at Holy TrinityHeigham, Norfolk
  3. Maggie Dorothy Howes b. 4 Apr 1910 (1910 J Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 146), bap. 1 Jun 1910 at Holy Trinity, Heigham
The mother's maiden name on all three registrations is BLAZEY.

In 1901, Elizabeth Howes (27) was living at 15, Manchester Street, Heigham, Norwich, with William (5) and Alice (1). Meanwhile, William Harman Howes (miss transcribed as William H Howne) (26) from Norwich, Norfolk, Married, Plasterer's Labourer, was a Boarder in a household in Epsom, Surrey.

By 1911, William Howes (37), Elizabeth (37), William (15), Alice (11) and Maggie (0), had moved to 19 Manchester St, Norwich, where her father and grandmother had lived. (Alice May Howes had been born at this address.)

In 1921, still at 19, Manchester Street, Norwich, were William H Howes (46) Bricklayer's Labourer for Norwich Corporation; Elizabeth E Howes (47), Alice M Howes (21) Chocolate Moulder at Caleys Ltd; and Maggie D Howes (11).

And in 1939, still living at 19 Manchester Street, Norwich, Norfolk, were William Howes, Builder's Labourer Retired and wife Elizabeth.

William Harman Howes died on 27 Nov 1944, aged 70 (1944 D Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 199), at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital

Eliza Elizabeth Howes (née Blazey) died, aged 78, from Cerebral thrombosis, arteriosclerosis, on 19 Jan 1951 (1951 M Quarter in NORWICH Volume 04B Page 919) at 60 Suffolk Street, Norwich, Norfolk.

Francis Robert Blazey and Maria Emily Andrews

Church of St Thomas The Martyr, Oxford
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © David Dixon - geograph.org.uk/p/2030942

Francis Robert Blazey (b. 1 Aug 1833), eldest son of Francis Stephen Blazey and Hannah Minns, married Maria Emily Andrews (bap. 22 Mar 1840 at St Thomas the Martyr, Oxford), daughter of Charles Andrews and Eliza Sparks, at St Thomas the Martyr's Church, Oxford, on 22 Aug 1859. Witnesses to their marriage were William Griffin and Mary Ann Griffin.

Francis & Maria Blazey had two sons:
  1. Francis Charles Blazey b. 1860 J Quarter in OXFORD Volume 03A Page 543, died aged 4 in 1864 S Quarter in WITNEY Volume 03A Page 418, buried 1 Aug 1864 at St Mary, Witney
  2. William James Blazey b. 1863 S Quarter in WITNEY Vol 03A Page 589, bap. 13 Sep 1863 at St Mary the Virgin, Witney, Oxfordshire
In 1861, Francis Robert Blazey (27) Fireman, wife Maria (20) Dressmaker and their son, Francis Charles (1) and Samuel Blazey (19), Francis' younger brother, were living at 2, St Pauls Street, Blockhouse, Worcester.

The next record tells us Maria Andrews Blazey, wife of F. R. Blazey, Driver E.I.R. (East Indian Railway Company), died from Cancer on 4 Sep 1873, aged 32y 7m, and was buried on 5 Sep 1873 at Dinapore, Bengal, India. (Dinapore was a British garrison town in the 19th century, now called Danapur, it's about 10km NW of Patna, and 500km NW of Calcutta, now Kolkata.)

Francis Robert Blazey, 41, married Louisa Susan Stanley, 16 (b. 21 May 1857 and bap. 25 Jun 1857, at Poona (now Pune), India), daughter of Augustus George and Eliza Jemima Stanley, on 9 Apr 1874, in Dinapore, India.

Francis & Louisa Blazey added a daughter:
  1. Alice Maud Stanley Blazey b. 21 Dec 1875, bap. 31 Jan 1876, in Dinapore, India
Both the marriage record for Francis and Louisa and the baptism record for Alice Maud Stanley Blazey give their residence as Khagoul (now Khagaul). A record dated 13 Jul 1880, relating to Francis Robert Blazey, Engineman, having membership of the Pioneer Lodge of the Freemasons, lists his residence as being in Assensole (now Asansol).

Louisa Susan Blazey died, aged 27, on 2 Mar 1884, at sea, aboard the India of Glasgow (of the British India Steam Navigation Company Glasgow & London), presumably on route to the UK, from Softening of the Brain (Cerebral softening, also known as encephalomalacia). The Inventory of the Estate of Mrs Louisa Susan Stanley amounted to three pages and a total of 6,463 (I assume pounds sterling, rather than Rupees) and included remittances to Francis Robert Blazey and for their daughter Alice Maud Stanley Blazey.

Francis Robert Blazey (51), Widower, Gentleman, of 9 Union Terrace, then married Eleanora Matilda Audric (24) at St James' Church, Norlands on 23 Apr 1885. The bride, of 161 Holland Road [Islington], listed as a Spinster, named her father as John [Jean] Baptiste François Audric, Cabinet Maker.

Francis & Elenora Blazey had two further children:
  1. Constance Ellen Blazey b. 1890 J Quarter in ISLINGTON Volume 01B Page 224, bap. 1 Jun 1890 in Holloway, Islington, with parents listed as Francis Robert Blazey, Licenced Victualler, and Margaret Matilda Eleanor Blazey, of 54 Hampden Road, Islington - formerly the address of the now demolished Royal Oak Tavern
  2. Harry Robert Blazey b. 5 Apr 1899 J Qtr in KENSINGTON Vol 01A Page 103, bap. 6 May 1899, son of Francis Robert, Retired Engineer, and Ellen Nora Blazey of 155 Holland Road
In 1891, at The Swan Inn, The Common, Kings Langley, Hertfordshire were Francis R Blazey (57) Publican; Margaret M Blazey (30) from Whitehaven, Cumberland; Alice Maud Blazey (15), Constance Blazey (0), Elizabeth Stiles (28) and Elenor E Stiles (1) Visitors and Maud Millers (9) Stepdaughter.

The Eastern Post of 3 Nov 1894 under Transfer of Licences in Tower Hamlets, "in the Parish of St Mary, Stratford, Bow: Milford Castle, Cadogan Terrace, Baptiste de Bolla to Francis Robert Blazey." This was a typo as it was the Mitford Castle, 129 Cadogan Terrace, Bow E9, a pub that, now gone, was already infamous then as the public house to which the victim, Thomas Briggs, was brought when his body was found on the tracks behind the pub on July 9 1864. He would later die and become the first ever murder victim on a British train. (An oddly ironic, if darkly appropriate, pub for an ex-train driver!)

In 1901, at 31, Sinclair Gardens, Hammersmith, were Francis R Blazey (68) Retired Engineer, Norah Blazey (39), Constance E Blazey (10), Harry R Blazey (2), daughter Alice Maud Trevail (25) - Alice married Herbert Fleming Trevail - Winifred S Trevail (0) Granddaughter, Katherine Pye (56) Boarder, Thomas R Cox (24) Boarder, Nellie Kent (19) General Domestic Servant, Margaret Bennet (56) Visitor and Kate Eames (47) Visitor - Sick nurse.

Francis Robert Blazey, listed as Frank Blazey, died in 1902 M Quarter in RICHMOND SURREY Volume 02A Page 309. Whilst the age at death appears to be 10 years adrift, this could indeed be a subtraction error, or seeing that he had a couple of younger wives, he may have been massaging his age.

Norah Blazey died on 14 Mar 1909 (1909 M Quarter in ST MARYLEBONE Volume 01A Page 442), age estimated as 45. Probate was granted on 20 April to Thomas Robert Cox Carpenter, the record lists, "BLAZEY, Margaret Matilda of Brook Side, Cat Hill, East Barnett, Middlesex, widow died 14 March 1909 at Middlesex Hospital, Gower Street, Middlesex. Effects £649 5s."

Anthony George Hiscock and Alice Blazey

Church of St James Norlands, Sunday, 29 April, 2007
Photo available for reuse under this Creative Commons licence.

Anthony George Hiscock (b. 8 Dec 1860, bap. 16 Mar 1862 at St George's, Hanover Square), son of John Anthony Hiscock and Sarah Barrell, married Alice Blazey (b. 6 Nov 1857, bap. 2 Oct 1867 at Holy Trinity, Heigham), youngest daughter of Francis Stephen Blazey and Hannah Minns, at St James' Church, Norlands on 31 Jul 1887. Both gave their address as 9, Union Terrace, Kensington, which was actually the residence of Joseph Tiff (married to Alice's sister, Eliza). Witnesses were Joseph Tiff and Maud Murray.

Registered originally as Antony Hiscock in 1861 M Quarter in HARTISMERE Volume 04A Page 499; listed as Antony on the 1861 Census and baptised at 15 months as Anthony George Hiscock, thereafter he was known as George. In 1881, George Hiscock (20) Coachman had been a Lodger in the Stables Rooms, Harewood, Wetherby, Yorkshire (Harewood House).

George and Alice Hiscock had four children:
  1. Ada Eliza Hiscock b. 20 Dec 1888 (1889 M Quarter in ALRESFORD Volume 02C Page 141), bap. 10 Mar 1889 at St James, Norlands
  2. Ellen Elizabeth Hiscock b. 1891 J Quarter in ALRESFORD Volume 02C Page 158, bap. 5 Jul 1891 at St James, Norlands
  3. Joseph George Hiscock b. 23 Sep 1895 (1895 D Quarter in ALRESFORD Volume 02C Page 154), bap. 1 Dec 1895 at St Andrew's Church, Tichborne, Hampshire
  4. Dorothy Alice Hiscock b. 19 Feb 1899 (1899 M Quarter in ALRESFORD Volume 02C Page 168), bap. 23 Apr 1899 at St Andrew's, Tichborne
Their son was clearly named in memory of his uncle Joseph Tiff, who died in 1894. Dorothy Alice's baptism confirms their address as Tichborne Park.

In 1891, we find George Hiscock (31) Coachman domestic servant, born in Suffolk; Alice Hiscock (~30) from Norwich; and Ada Hiscock (2) living at Coachman House, Mill Cross, Tichborne, Alresford, Hampshire.

In 1901, at Stables, Tichborne Park, Tichborne, were George Hiscock (40) Coachman; Alice Hiscock (~42), Ada Eliza Hiscock (12), Ellen Elizabeth Hiscock (9), Joseph George Hiscock (5) and Dorothy Alice Hiscock (2).

In 1911, still at Tichborne Stables, Tichborne, Alresford, Hampshire were George Hiscock (50) Coachman; Alice Hiscock (~50), Joseph Hiscock (15) Stable boy; Dorothy Hiscock (12) and Eliza Tiff (56) Visitor (Alice's sister). On this census they confirm that they'd had four children, all of whom were then alive. Ada E Hiscock (22) Lady's Maid was listed as a Visitor in the household of Elizabeth Magrath at 210 Lancaster Road, Notting Hill, W Kensington.

In 1921, George Hiscock (60) no longer working, was living at 15, Heathfield South, Twickenham, Middlesex, with Alice Hiscock (62), Joseph G Hiscock (25) Motor Engineer at Leyland Motors; Ada Hiscock (31) Shop Assistant; Nellie Hiscock (29) Typist; Dorothy Hiscock (22) Clerk; Joan Hiscock (6) Granddaughter* and Percy Ritchie (29) Motor Engineer at Leyland Motors, from Faversham, Kent, 'Boarder' - getting a bit more than bed and meals. [*Registered Joan Ritchie Hiscock in 1915 S Quarter in BRENTFORD Volume 03A Page 176, it's obvious she was the illegitimate daughter of Ada Eliza Hiscock and Percy George Ritchie, who eventually married in 1922.]

Alice Hiscock died in 1936 M Quarter in BRENTFORD Volume 03A Page 290. Her age at death was listed as 77, which was consistent with the ages listed for her on each census. Like many other women older than their husbands, I suspect hadn't told him the whole truth and deducted a couple of years.

In 1939, George Hiscock, Coachman Retired, Widowed, was still living at 15 Heathfield South, Twickenham, with Joan Hiscock (b. 26 May 1915) Dressmaker; Percy G Ritchie (b. 22 Aug 1893) Stone Mason; Ada Ritchie (b. 20 Dec 1888); Margorie Ritchie (b. 7 Dec 1923) [Registered Marjorie Alice Ritchie in 1923 D Quarter in BRENTFORD Volume 03A Page 194.] and Eliza Tift (sic) (b. 16 Feb 1851) Domestic servant retired, Widowed.

George Hiscock of 15 Heathfield South, Twickenham, died, aged 92, on 7 Feb 1953 (1953 M Quarter in EALING Volume 05E Page 297) at West Middlesex Hospital Isleworth. Probate was granted on 7 Mar 1953 to Joseph George Hiscock, Engineer. George left effects of £1193 14s 8d.

Samuel Blazey and Susanna Plunkett

The Norman nave of Wymondham Abbey, Wednesday, 19 August, 2015
Photo available for reuse under this Creative Commons licence.

Banns were read in Wymondham on 23 Jun 1782 and 30 Jun 1782, for the marriage of Samuel Blazey (bap. 12 Sep 1761 in Wymondham), of this parish, bachelor, son of Paul Blazey and Mary Day, and Susanna Plunkett (bap. 27 Jan 1763 in Wymondham), of the same parish, Spinster, daughter of John Plunkett and Mary Bale, but on the third date the record states that they were not published. Unfortunately, I can't read the reason written on the record and to be fair, nor could various online OCR tools, the best of which, channelling it's inner Stanley Unwin (that'll date me) came up with, "at the men's steather and he had vermed astotter from herden which forted the going on". Indeed. What I interpret the situation to be is that Samuel had requested them not to be published as the couple had separated. If so, only temporarily, because after the banns were recalled on 8th, 15th and 22nd Jun 1783, Samuel Blazey and Susan Plunkett were married at Wymondham Abbey on 23 Jul 1783. Witnesses at this wedding were Sam Taylor and Jeramiah Forster.

Samuel and Susanna Blazey had at least five children:
  1. William Blazey bap. 5 Oct 1783 in Wymondham
  2. Elizabeth Blazey bap. 28 Mar 1785 in Wymondham
  3. Paul Blazey bap. 4 Apr 1790 Private Baptism in Wymondham
  4. Susanna Blazey bap. 11 Jul 1792 in Wymondham
  5. Mary Blazey b. 12 Aug 1797, bap. 20 Aug 1797 in Wymondham
On Elizabeth's and Susanna's baptisms, their mother's name is Susanna Blazey (late Susanna Plunkett) and on Paul's, it's Susan Blazey (late Plunkett).

So far I've not found a record of the death of this Samuel Blazey. There are various records that could relate to Susanna (a further marriage included), but, so far, I've been unable to confirm if any of them are relevant.

John Maycock and Susanna Blazey

St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Thursday, 7 October, 2010
Photo available for reuse under this Creative Commons licence.

John Maycock married Susanna Blazey (bap. 11 Jul 1792 in Wymondham), daughter of Samuel Blazey and Susanna Plunkett, at St Martin at Oak, Norwich on 17 Jul 1811. (They were married by Charles Tanqueray, Clerk [in Holy Orders] and one wonders if he was linked to the Charles Tanqueray of gin fame.) Witnesses were Samuel Rainbird and Stephen Codman.

Susanna Blazey came to this marriage with a son, Francis Stephen Blazey, who was born on 26 Dec 1810 and baptised on 30 Dec 1810, also at St Martin at Oak, Norwich. The baptism record makes it absolutely clear that Francis was 'illegitimate born'. He never took this stepfather's name, so I think it fairly safe to assume that Maycock was not Francis' biological father.

So far, I can find no other records for John Maycock, so I have no idea of his age, nor when or where he was born and neither can I find a record of his death. Similarly, I've not found any children born to this couple.

There are banns of a marriage between Thomas Bray and a Susan Maycock, Widow, also at St Martin at Oak, in November 1819, which might relate. However, I can similarly find no other records of Thomas Bray, nor any children of that marriage, nor a death of a Susan or Susanna Bray.

How am I related? Susanna Blazey was a 4th Great-Grandmother.
