Charles Goff (bap. 9 Feb 1834 in Kentisbeare), Mason, son of James Goff and Elizabeth Lane, married Elizabeth Lock (bap. 2 Jan 1831 in Ashbrittle), daughter of Mary Ann Lock, at St John the Baptist, Ashbrittle, on 6 Feb 1855. Incredibly, Elizabeth Lock, Servant, where her father should be named, it just says 'Illegitimate'. Whilst this is honest and true, I've never seen that on a marriage certificate before, with most in that situation making up a father 'for appearances sake'. Witnesses were James Ridgeway, presumably her half-brother, and Charles Vickery. (In 1841, Elizabeth Lock, then 10, had been living with her grandfather, John Lock, and I wouldn't have known about her, but DNA links to descendants of three of Elizabeth's sons show her as being my 'half 2nd great-grandaunt'. As the daughter of my 3rd great-grandmother and half-sister of my 2nd great-grandmother, that's spot on.)

Charles and Elizabeth Goff had nine children:

In 1871, at Goodiford, Kentisbeare were Charles Goff (34) Mason, Elizabeth Goff (37), James Goff (16) Mason's Labourer; William Goff (13), Mary Goff (11), John Goff (9), Anna Goff (7), Francis Goff (5) and Henry Goff (1).

In 1881, Charles Goff (45) Farmer & mason & miller employing 15 men & boys was still at Goodiford Mills, Kentisbeare with Elizabeth Goff (48), William Goff (23) Mason; Mary Goff (21), John Goff (20) Carpenter; Hannah [Anna] Goff (17), Frank Goff (15) Miller; Henry Goff (11), Charles Goff (9) and James Hiles (16) Farm Servant from Clayhanger, Devon.

In 1891, at Mill House, Kentisbeare, were Charles Goff (56) Builder & miller; Elizabeth Goff (58), Frank Goff (25) Miller; Henry Goff (21) Carpenter and Charles Goff (19) Builder's son.

Elizabeth Goff of Goodiford, Kentisbeare, died, aged 60, on 17 Apr 1892 (1892 J Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 279) and was buried on 23 Apr 1892 at St Marys, Kentisbeare, leaving £171 to Charles Goff, Builder.

Charles Goff, Builder and Miller, died the following year, aged 58, on 29 Mar 1893 (1893 J Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 295) and was buried on 5 Apr 1893, also at St Marys Church, Kentisbeare. He left effects of £1084 (£171,775 in 2023) to Frank Goff and Charles Goff.

James Goff (b. 1855 in Ashbrittle, Somerset), eldest son of Charles Goff and Elizabeth Lock, married Sarah Ann Canniford (bap. 18 Jan 1857 in Kentisbeare), daughter of William Canniford and Jane Baker, in 1876. 

James and Sarah Ann Goff had nine children:

1. William Goff b. 1877 J Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 428, and was initially baptised privately on 10 Mar 1877 and then again in the church of St Mary, Kentisbeare on 20 May 1877. Died, aged 6, on 18 Sep 1883 (1883 S Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 252) and was buried on 23 Sep 1883 at St Mary, Kentisbeare. [1]

[1] The newspaper report in Western Times of 28 Sep 1883 reads: "Sympathy is felt in this village with James Goff, who lost two children on the 18th instant - a boy aged six years and a girl aged four, dying within 10 minutes of each other.  This heavy bereavement was followed by another in the death of a boy aged two years on the 23rd instant, and now Mrs Goff has been taken seriously ill with dyptheria (sic). Foul water is assigned as the cause of the illness, and the Nuisance Inspector as well as the Medical Officer of Health have been called into consultation over this very serious affair."

[2] The Exeter and Plymouth Gazette of 6 Dec 1895 reported, "An inquest was held at Kentisbeare, on Saturday, upon the body of Winifred Goff, aged two years, the daughter of Mr. James Goff, Builder. Dr Tracey, of Willand, attributed death to diphtheria, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly."

Of course this was pre-vaccine, pre-antibiotics and pre-NHS.

In 1881, James Goff (26) Mason from Ashbrittle, Somerset was living in the Village, Kentisbeare, with Sarah A Goff (25) from Broadhembury, Devon; William Goff (4), Annie Goff (2) and Tom Goff (0). Beatrice E Goff (18) was working as a Parlourmaid in St Leonards, Weston Super Mare.

In 1891, in Burlescombe were James Goff (36) Bricklayer; Sarah A Goff (35), Beatrice E Goff (8), James Goff (4), Henrietta Goff (2) and Anna Goff (0).

On 19 Sep 1899, The Western Times reported, "The first meeting of Creditors of James Goff, Mason, of Colepark, Kentisbeare, was held in the Receiver's Office, Exeter, on Thursday. Debtor estimated his liabilities at £212 15s 6d and assets £75 9s 6d, leaving a deficiency of £137 6s. Causes of failure alleged by debtor were sickness of self and family ..."

In 1901, at Hollis Green, Kentisbeare, were James Goff (46) Mason; Sarah A Goff (45), James Goff (14) Mason; Henrietta Goff (12), Annie Goff (10) and Agnes Goff (0). 

James Goff, Mason, died, aged 53, at the Tiverton Infirmary and Dispensary in 1908 D Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 251 and was buried on 11 Nov 1908 at St Mary, Kentisbeare.

Sarah Ann Goff née Canniford, of Hollis Green, Kentisbeare, wife of the above James Goff, died, aged 52, in 1908 D Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 248 and was buried on 13 Dec 1908, also at St Mary, Kentisbeare.

• Beatrice Elizabeth Goff (24) Domestic Servant of Hollis Green, Kentibeare, daughter of James Goff, married William John Wyatt (21) Brakeman, of 22 Sutton Road, Newport, Monmouthshire, son of James Wyatt, on 31 Mar 1907 at St Mary, Kentisbeare. They had four children. Beatrice Elizabeth Wyatt died, in 1976.
• James Goff married Harriet Bennett, daughter of John Bennett, on 8 Apr 1911 at St John's Church, Maindee, Newport, Monmouthshire. They had four daughters. James Goff died, at 63, in 1949 in Newport (Monmouthshire).
• Henrietta Goff married George Hendy, son of George David Hendy and Jane Richards, in Tiverton, in 1908. In 1911, they were living at 6 Melbourne Street, Tiverton and living with them was Henrietta's younger sister, Agnes Augusta, then 10 and at school. George and Henrietta had one son, Leslie George Hendy b. 1921. Agnes was still living with them, at 1 John Street, Tiverton, in 1939. Henrietta Hendy died, in Tiverton, in 1980. 
• Annie Goff died, aged 40, in St Thomas, Exeter, in 1931.
• Agnes Augusta Goff died, in Tiverton, on 17 Jul 1982.

Bradfield House
Bradfield House - or Bradfield Hall, the name on the gateposts - in Uffculme parish, south west of the village, near Willand. This is the east front with the medieval great hall in the centre.

John Goff (b. 1861), son of Charles Goff and Elizabeth Lock, married Hannah Mary Cook (b. 19 Oct 1861 in Halberton), daughter of John Cook and Elizabeth Davey, in Tiverton Registration District, in 1883.

John and Hannah (known as Annie) had seven children:

In 1891, John Goff (30) Carpenter, Cottage, Kentisbeare, Annie Goff (29), Charles Goff (7), Bessie Goff (6), Henry Goff (4) and Edmund Goff (0).

In 1901, John Goff (39) Estate carpenter in Kerswell, Broadhembury with Annie Goff (39), Edmund Goff (10), Rose Ellen Goff (7), Arthur Goff (4) and Harold Goff (1). Charles Goff was not listed anywhere; Bessie Goff (16) was a Domestic Servant at Gowers Turners, Fore Street, Cullompton and Henry Goff (15) was a Farm Servant at Kentismoor Farm, Kentisbeare.

In 1911, John Goff (49) Estate carpenter was at Bradfield, Uffculme with Annie Goff (49), Edmund Goff (20) Baker; Arthur Goff (14) and Harold Goff (11). The 1911 census confirms that the couple had 7 children, of whom 6 were, at that time, still living. Bessie Goff (26) was a Domestic Servant in Holland Villas Road, Kensington, London (Holland Park). Rose Ellen Goff, who will have been 17, I assume was out working, but didn't find her.

On 2 Aug 1912, Edmund Goff (22) listed as a Farm Labourer embarked in London on the SS Roscommon, bound for Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, where he arrived, after a 56 day voyage, on 27 Sep 1912.

On the 1913 Australia Electoral Roll, Edmund Goff, Baker, was listed "Care Of Mrs Reed, Sachs Street, Cairns, Herbert, Queensland, Australia". Then in 1915, Edmund Goff, Baker was in Rankin Street, Innisfail, Queensland, Australia, where the record suggests he had been since 20 Jul 1914.

On 13 May 1916, Edmund Goff enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and on 20 Oct 1916, embarked on Australian Troop Transport, HMAT A17, Port Lincoln, with the 12th Machine Gun Company, 6th Reinforcements, from Melbourne, Victoria. The record gave his home address as 'Care Of Mrs E Wallace, Innisfail'. It also gave his next of kin as John Goff of Willand, Cullompton, Devon, England.

Edmund Goff, Private, 13th Australian Machine Gun Corps., A.I.F., Service No. 415, son of John and Hannah Mary Goff of Willand, Cullompton, Devon, England, was Killed in Action, in Belgium, on 18 July 1917. (Battle of Passchendaele). He is buried at (the presumably aptly named) Mud Corner Cemetery, Wallonie, Belgium, Grave II. B. 2. Personal Inscription: FAME & GLORY EASE NOT OUR ACHING HEARTS. He is remembered on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, the Innisfail Cenotaph and on Willand War Memorial at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Willand Old Village.

In 1921, John Goff (59) Estate Carpenter working for Mrs Adams; Hannah Mary Goff (58), Arthur Goff (24) Coal Miner; and Harold Goff (22) Motor Driver were living in the New Buildings, Willand, Devon.

John Goff died, aged 76, in 1936 D Qtr in TIVERTON Vol 05B Page 483.

In 1939, Hannah M Goff, Widowed, Old Age Pensioner, was living with daughter & son-in-law, Charles & Rose Hole in Station Road, Culmstock.

Hannah Mary Goff died, at 87, in 1949 M Qtr in TIVERTON Vol 07A 948.

• Henry Goff married Eveline James Drew (b. 9 Dec 1888), daughter of Edwin Drew and Fanny Louisa James, in Truro, Cornwall, in 1909. The couple had one son, George Henry Goff b. 1910 M Quarter in REDRUTH Volume 05C Page 157. In 1911, Henry Goff (24) Nurseryman from Cullompton, Devon; Eveline James Goff and George Henry Goff (1) were living at Treleigh Redruth, Cornwall. Son George Henry died, aged 9, in 1919 D Quarter in REDRUTH Volume 05C Page 221. In 1939, Henry Goff, Smallholder and Eveline Goff were living at Salem House, Chacewater, Truro. Eveline James Goff died on 10 Dec 1961 and Harry Goff died, at 89, on 6 May 1976 and are in buried in St. Paul's Churchyard.
• Rose Ellen Goff married Charles Edward Hole (b. 22 Jan 1891 in Tiverton), son of Robert Hole and Rosa Ellen Jones, in Tiverton, in 1921. In 1939, Charles E Hole, Storekeeper Coal & Corn, Rosa E Hole and mother-in-law were living in Station Road, Culmstock. Charles E Hole died, at 75, in 1966, in Taunton, Somerset and Rose Ellen Hole died, at 80, in Newton Abbot, Devon.
• Arthur Goff married Florence May Jarvis (b. 29 Sep 1899), daughter of Charles Jarvis and Sarah Spurway, in Tiverton, in 1927. The couple had three daughters. Florence May Goff died on 3 Mar 1984 and Arthur Goff less than two weeks later, on 16 Mar 1984. They are buried together Cullompton Cemetery.
• Harold Goff married Elizabeth Margaret Viney (b. 8 Jan 1905), daughter of James Viney and Elizabeth Featherby, in Tiverton, in 1930 and had 3 daughters. Harold Goff died in Uffculme, on 24 Apr 1978 and Elizabeth Goff, in Exeter, on 24 Mar 1995.

Joseph How and Mary How

Joseph How (b. 1781 in Dulverton, Somerset) married Mary How (b. 1779 in Exton, Somerset) at St Peter's Church, Exton on 2 Feb 1807. Most likely the couple were cousins, but it hasn't been possible to find baptism records to confirm exactly how they were related. And undoubtedly still keeping it in the family, the witnesses to this marriage were John How and Jane How.

There are records for seven children of this marriage, all of whom were baptised at at St Peter's Church, Exton:

In 1841, at West Broford, Dulverton were Joseph How (60) Farmer, Mary How (63), Joseph How (25), Matthew How (21), Margaret How (20), Mary How (19), Elizabeth How (20) formerly Elizabeth Stevens wife of Joseph How (m. 22 Apr 1841); Mary How (1 m) daughter of Joseph How and Elizabeth Stevens; Frances Orchard (10) daughter of James Orchard and Elizabeth How; Henry Westcott (40) Ag Lab and Robert Hobbs (12).

In 1851, still at West Broford, Dulverton were Joseph How (70) Farmer Of 180 Acres Employing 2 Labourers; Mary How (72) Farmer's Wife from Exton, Somerset; Joseph How (35) Farmer's Son; Elizabeth How (30) Domestic; Frances A Orchard (19) Granddaughter, House Servant; Thomas Orchard (17) Grandson, Farm Servant, son of James Orchard and Elizabeth How and Joseph How (8) Grandson, son of Joseph How and Elizabeth Stevens.

It hasn't [yet] been possible to identify deaths of Joseph or Mary.

Thomas Staines and Sally Hockley

Thomas Staines (bap. 28 Mar 1790 in Mountnessing, Essex), son of Thomas Staines and Sarah Lewin, married Sally Hockley (bap. 23 Dec 1787 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow), daughter of Daniel Hockley and Sarah Turner, on 20 Jan 1812 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow. Witnesses were Robert Hockley, Sally's 1st cousin, and Benjamin Cheek (the latter was a Boot and Shoe Maker, according to Pigot's Directory of Essex 1823.)

Thomas and Sally had eleven children in total, who were all baptised at St Giles, Mountnessing, where the family settled for many years:

On the baptisms of Thomas, Sarah, William and John, their father is listed as a Shop Keeper. On those of George onwards, he's listed as a farmer. He's also listed as a farmer on Sarah's marriage to Henry Wilton in 1838.

In 1841, Thomas Staines (50), Farmer, was residing at Woodlands Farm [Thoby Lane], Mountnessing with wife Sally and six of their children; George (20), Robert (18), Maria (15), Mary (13), Ann (11) and Charles (9). Eldest son Thomas Staines married Eliza Lee in 1835 and went to live in High Roding; Sarah Staines had married Henry Wilton in 1838 and they could be found in the High Street, Great Dunmow; a William Staines of the right age, who was born in Mountnessing, is a farmer of 79 acres in Navestock, Essex; John Staines also appeared to have left home and Elizabeth Staines, it would seem, sadly, had just died, aged 17, and was buried on 30 May 1841.

In 1851, Thomas Staines (61), Farmer of 130 Acres, Employing 4 Labourers and 2 Boys, at Woodlands Farm, Mountnessing, with wife Sally. Still at home were George (30), Maria (25) and Ann (22). Mary Ann Wilton (5) was listed as Niece (could be an easy mistake if one of children was completing the census or responding to the enumerator for their parents), but she was Thomas and Sally's granddaughter (daughter of Henry Wilton and Sarah Staines), possibly staying with her grandparents as her mother had another child in 1851. 

By 1861, Thomas and Sally Staines had moved to Lord Peters (Sir William Petre) Alms Houses, Stone Field, Ingatestone, Chelmsford. Thomas (71) was then listed as being a Maltster and Corn Dealer. Still living at home were daughters Maria (32) and Anne (29) and visiting them were granddaughter, Elizabeth Staines (14) (daughter of William Staines) and their grandson, Henry Staines Wilton (20) (son of Henry Wilton and Sarah Staines).

Thomas Staines died, at 79, in 1870 (1870 M Quarter in CHELMSFORD Volume 04A Page 134), and was buried, on 8 Feb 1870, in Ingatestone.

In 1871, Sally Staines, widow and annuitant, was living Nr The Maltings, Avenue Cottage with Anne (40), housekeeper and Fanny Hogg, boarder. 

Sally Staines (née Hockley) died, aged 87 in 1875 (1875 M Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 308), and was buried on 18 Mar 1875 at St Edmund and St Mary's Church, Ingatestone.

Joseph Edward Tipping (b. 4 May 1856 in Tardebigge, Worcestershire), widower, son of Henry Tipping and Elizabeth Tarplee, married Grace Hannah Tubb (b. 9 Aug 1871 in Sheppey, Kent), daughter of Edward Tubb and Sarah Elizabeth Joy, in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, on 22 Nov 1900. 

In 1861, Joseph (4) son of Henry Tipping (48) Farmer of 148 Acres at Upper Bentley, Bromsgrove; in 1871, at 14, he was a pupil boarder at Birch Abbey Lane Boys School, Alcester, Warwickshire and in 1881, while his father had upgraded to 230 acres at Banks Green Farm, Webheath, Bromsgrove; Joseph (25) was Farm Bailiff at Berrow Green Farm, Martley, Worcestershire.

Joseph's previous marriage, on 20 Oct 1884, at All Saints Church in the parish of Weston-on-Avon, then in Gloucestershire, was to Mary Ellen Wareing (b. 10 Aug 1857 in Fringford, Oxfordshire), with whom he had four children:

In 1891, Joseph E Tipping (34) Farmer was living at Rolls Wood, Water Lane, Haselor, Alcester, Warwickshire with wife Mary E (33), Elise E (4), Winifred (0), Gertrude M Tipping (7) Niece and Charles Shirley (14) Farm Servant.

Mary Ellen Tipping died, at 38, on 13 Apr 1896 (1896 J Qtr in STRATFORD ON AVON Vol 06D Page 384), and buried on 17 Apr 1896, in Haselor.

Grace Hannah Tipping became step-mother to Joseph's two surviving daughters and the couple went on to add five further children:

In 1911, still at Miles Bush, Alcester Road, Stratford-on-Avon, were Joseph Edward Tipping (55) Castrator and general labourer; Grace Hannah Tipping (37), Reginald Henry Tipping (10), Ernest Edward Joy Tipping (8), Marjorie Tipping (6), William Tarplee Tipping (3) and Herbert Roy Tipping (1). Winifred Agnes Tipping (20), was Domestic Servant to Mary Louisa Flower (47) Widow, at Woodville, Gordon Road, Camberley, Frimley, Surrey. 

In 1921, Joseph Edward Tipping (65) Gardening 'Own Account' was still living at Miles Bush, Stratford on Avon, Old Stratford & Drayton, Warwickshire with Grace Hannah Tipping (46), Reginald Henry Tipping (20) Saddler & Harness Maker; Ernest Edward Joy Tipping (18) Boot repairer; Marjorie Tipping (16) Mother's help; William Tarplee Tipping (13) and Herbert Roy Tipping (11).

Grace Hannah Tipping died, aged 56, on 15 Aug 1928 (1928 S Quarter in STRATFORD ON AVON Volume 06D Page 704).

In 1939, Joseph E Tipping, Market Gardener, widower, was living with his son Edward E (Ernest), at 40 Shottery Road, Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Joseph Edward Tipping died, aged 84, in 1941 M Quarter in STRATFORD-ON-AVON Volume 06D Page 1792.

• Elise Ellen Tipping married William John Bushnell in Ontario, Canada on 15 Sep 1913. They had a son, William Bushnell (1914-2007). Elise Ellen Bushnell died in Ontario, in 1982.
• Reginald H Tipping married Marjorie Robinson (b. 11 Jun 1905), in Warwick, in 1932. In 1939, Marjorie Tipping, married, was living with her parents, Henry and Rosina Robinson, at Brook Cottage Barford Hill, Barford, Warwick. Reginald H Tipping died, in Warwickshire, in 1985. Marjorie Tipping died in Nov 1992. 
• Ernest E J Tipping married Gladys Maud Dyde (b. 18 May 1908), in Stratford-on-Avon, in 1930. In 1939, were living at 40 Shottery Road, Stratford-Upon-Avon. Gladys M Tipping died in 1989. Ernest Edward J Tipping died, in 2003, at 100.
• Marjorie Tipping married Charles Henry Cooke (b. 18 Jul 1903), in Shottery, in 1929. In 1939, were at 35 Justins Avenue, Stratford-Upon-Avon. Charles Henry Cooke died on 10 Sep 1977 in Long Itchington, Warwickshire. Marjorie Cooke died in 1990.
• William T Tipping married Grace Agnes Kathleen Worrall (b. 16 Oct 1909), in Stratford-on-Avon, in 1931. In 1939, lived at 11 College Street, Stratford-Upon-Avon. William Tarplee Tipping died, in Stratford on Avon, in 1969. Grace Agnes K Tipping in 2002.
• Herbert R Tipping married Agnes Mary Bullingham (b. 16 Jan 1913) on 6 June 1936, in Shottery (famous for Anne Hathaway's Cottage). In 1939, were at 4 Church Road, Shottery, Stratford-Upon-Avon. Herbert Roy Tipping died, in Stratford on Avon, in 1981. Agnes Mary Tipping died on 24 Jun 2001.

James Ridgeway and Thomasin Rookley

Also known as Hele Mill; there has been a paper mill here since at least 1765. These buildings date from the 20th century. The brick building carries a datestone of 1912. In previous centuries several other paper mills relied on the water power of the river Culm, seen here flowing under a bridge that may have once carried a siding into the works from the nearby railway.

James Ridgeway (bap. 25 Oct 1835 in Ashbrittle), son of James Ridgeway and Mary Ann Lock, married Thomasin Rookley (bap. 28 Feb 1841), daughter of John Rookley and Mary Ayres, on 12 Nov 1859, at St. Mary’s, Kentisbeare.

The only child of this marriage was:

1. James Ridgway b. 1866 D Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 430, bap. 25 Dec 1866 at St. Mary’s Church, Kentisbeare. He died, aged 6 months in 1867 J Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 287 and was buried, also in Kentisbeare churchyard, on 5 May 1867.

In 1861, James Ridgeway (25), Thomasin Ridgeway (20) and Samuel Rookley (4) Nephew, were living at Kentismoor [Farm], Kentisbeare.

In 1871, James Ridgway (37), Thomasin Ridgeway (28), still living at the 'Moor' [Kentismoor Farm]. Thomasin's father, John Rookley (78) still employed as a Farm Labourer, was living with them. (John Rookely died shortly afterwards, aged 78, and was buried on 14 May 1871.)

By 1881, James Ridgeway (45) and Thomasin Ridgeway (35), had moved to Rhode [Farm], Bradninch. Two nephews were staying with them as visitors, Walter Hartley (8) from Portsmouth and John Hartley (7) from Wales (actually Newcastle, Northumberland), sons of Thomasin's sister Anna. 

In 1891, James Ridgway (50) Farm Labourer and Thomasin Ridgeway (45) now working at the paper mill, were living in Hele, Bradninch.

In 1901, at Lower Hele, Bradninch, were James Ridgeway (68) Agricultural Labourer and Tamsin (sic) Ridgeway (60) Rag cutter in a paper mill.

In 1911, still at Lower Hele, where James Ridgway (77) and Tomassie (sic) Ridgeway (70) were both described as "Old Age Pensioner". Mary James (67) Widow of No occupation from Plymtree, was a visitor staying with them. (The "Old Age Pension" was introduced in 1909 in the United Kingdom (which then included all of Ireland). Following the passage of the Old-Age Pensions Act 1908 a pension of 5 shillings per week (25p, equivalent, using the Consumer Price Index, to £26 in present-day terms), or 7s.6d per week (equivalent to £39/week today) for a married couple, was payable to persons with an income below £21 per annum (equivalent to £2200 today), The qualifying age was 70, and the pensions were subject to a means test.)

James Ridgeway died, aged 78 in 1913 J Qtr in TIVERTON Vol 05B 492.

Thomasin Ridgeway died at 76 in 1918 J Qtr in TIVERTON Vol 05B 503.

Bradninch and Hele

Nicholas Rundle Trevail and Ann Bennett

 Packhorse Inn, Fore Street, St Blazey, Cornwall

Nicholas Rundle Trevail (bap. 28 Jan 1838), son of Joseph Trevail and Jane Rundle, married Ann Bennett (bap. 28 Apr 1840 in Luxulyan), daughter of Richard Bennett and Ann Collings, at the Parish Church of St Cyriacus and St Julitta, Luxulyan, on 22 Oct 1864. However, Ann Trevail died giving birth to their daughter, Ann Bennett Trevail (b. 1867 M Quarter in BODMIN Volume 05C Page 84). The Royal Cornwall Gazette Death Notice read TREVAIL - At Rosemelling, Luxulyan, February 19, Ann, the wife of Mr Nicholas Trevail, aged 27 (1867 M Quarter in OF BODMIN Volume 05C Page 61). Ann Trevail was buried and the infant baptised on the same day, 21 Feb 1867.

On 3 Aug 1869, Nicholas Rundle Trevail, widower, by profession a butcher, married Sophia Jane Olver (b. 1845), daughter of William Joseph Olver and Mary Kingston, at St. Blaise, St Blazey, Cornwall. (Sophia's father was a Master Mariner, born in 1816 in Mevagissey and had married Mary Kingston, from Devonport, at St Andrew's Church, Plymouth on 31 Mar 1837.)

But Nicholas and Sophia had been married for only four months, when Nicholas Rundle Trevail died, aged 32, on 11 Dec 1869, at St Blazey (1869 D Quarter in SAINT AUSTELL Volume 05C Page 82). Nicholas Rundle Trevail of the Packhorse Inn, St Blazey was buried, on 15 Dec 1869, at Luxulyan. The probate record, which granted his effects to his widow Sophia Trevail of the Parish of Mevagissey, listed Nicholas' occupation as Innkeeper.

In 1871, the four year old orphan, Ann B Trevail was living in the household of William and Tabitha M Carkeek, at High Lanes Cottage, Veryan, Truro, where she was described as their niece. Tabitha Martha Bennett, born 1842, was her mother's younger sister. In 1881, Ann (14) was still living with her aunt and uncle, Tabitha and William Carkeek, grocer, at Church Town, Luxulyan. 

In 1891, Ann Trevail (24) had moved to the household of Elizabeth Bennett (44) widow, farmer at Colkerrow, Lanlivery, another relative of her mother's. Living there also was Elizabeth's father, James Rundell (Rundle?) (73).

Sadly, by 1901, A B Trevail (35) single female, Pauper Patient, was an Inmate of the Cornwall County Asylum, later St Lawrence's Mental Hospital. Annie Bennett Trevail died, aged 43, and was buried, in Bodmin, on 4 Sep 1909.

As was hinted on the probate record, Nicholas Rundle Trevail's widow, Sophia Jane, returned to her family in Mevagissey after his death. In 1871, Sophia Jane Trevail (25) was living with her widowed mother, Mary Olver (55), her sister Mary (27) and brother, George (21), in Fore Street, Mevagissey.

By 1891, Sophia (42) and her mother, Mary Olver (75) retired and living off her own means, were at Prospect Terrace, Church Street, Mevagissey. 

It was not until 1896, when Sophia Jane Trevail, 51, remarried, in St Austell, to Walter Henry Sanders (b. 1840 J Quarter in MEDWAY Volume 05 Page 338, bap. 28 Jun 1840 at St Mary's Church, Chatham, Kent), son of Stephen Sanders and Jane Nichols. This is interesting, because way back before Sophia had married Nicholas Trevail, on 5 May 1867, the first banns were called for an intended marriage between Walter Henry Sanders and Sophia Jane Olver, in Mevagissey. Obviously, something had prevented the marriage from going ahead at that time, because under the second date for the banns is written 'to be omitted', the third space is left blank and a line crossed through the whole record. But, almost 30 years later, they finally tied the knot.

In 1901, Walter H Sanders (60) from Chatham, Kent, Grocer; Sophia J Sanders (53) and Mary Olver (83) were living in Pouddlin Lane, St Austell. 

A newspaper death notice tells us that Walter Henry Sanders died, age under-estimated as 64, on 27 Jan 1907, in Truro. His death was registered at the General Register Office erroneously under William Henry Sanders (sic) in 1907 M Quarter in ST. AUSTELL Volume 05C Page 79.

In 1911, Sophia Jane Sanders (66) Widow, was a Grocer in her own right, with her niece, Beatrice Mary Olver (19) as a Companion.

In 1921, Sophia Jane Sanders (76) was living with her sister Elizabeth Doidge Kymbrell (82) Widow, in Church Street, Mevagissey, Cornwall.

Sophia Jane Sanders (GRO record wrong as Saunders) died, in St Austell, aged 85, in 1931 J Quarter in ST. AUSTELL Volume 05C Page 126.

Henry Wilton and Martha Douse

Saint Mary the Virgin, Great Shelford

Henry Wilton (bap. 12 Apr 1702), son of Henry Wilton and Elizabeth Bissell, first married Mary Simper, on 14 Jan 1727 in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, with whom he had a daughter, Mary Wilton bap. 18 Nov 1728. However, it appears that Mary Wilton and the infant were buried in Stapleford on 28 Nov 1728.

Henry Wilton, groom from Stapleford, then married Martha Douse (bap. 8 Jul 1711 in Great Shelford), daughter of Philip Douse and Constance Harvey, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire on 15 Sep 1732.

Henry and Martha Wilton had three children baptised in Stapleford:

1. Henry Wilton bap. 2 Sep 1733
2. Richard Wilton, bap. 16 Oct 1737
3. Martha Wilton bap. 21 Oct 1739

Henry Wilton died on 18 Oct 1739 and was buried on the 21st, at Stapleford.

Martha Wilton was buried on 24 Oct 1766, also at Stapleford.

Henry's parents, Henry Wilton (b. ~1669) and Elizabeth Bissell (b. ~1673), had five children, all baptised in Stapleford:

1. Sarah Wilton bap. 14 Jul 1695 (Died in 1695)
2. Martha Wilton bap. 27 Dec 1696
3. Sarah Wilton bap. 14 Apr 1700
4. Henry Wilton bap. 12 Apr 1702
5. Richard Wilton bap. 7 Oct 1705 (Buried 18 Dec 1707)

Elizabeth Wilton was buried on 15 Oct 1705. (I think we can guess the cause.) Henry does not appear to remarry and there are no other children listed born to a Henry Wilton in that period with a different mother.

Henry Wilton Snr died on 27 Jun 1726 and was buried, on 30 Jun 1726, in Stapleford, Cambridgeshire.

• Sarah Wilton m. William Archer in Stapleford on 14 Sep 1726.

John Rookley (bap. 9 Jan 1797 in Kentisbeare, Devon), son of James Rookley and Thomazin Salter, married Mary Ayres (bap. 13 Jun 1800 in Kentisbeare), daughter of Zachariah Ayres and Mary Farnell, on 24 May 1820 at St Mary's Church, Kentisbeare. Witnesses were William Ayres and Charles Knight.

Records suggest John and Mary Rookley had 13 children:

All Civil Birth registrations list the surname as Ruckley (doubtlessly, as a result of illiteracy and the Devon accent - on William's baptism the curate has written "Rookley, or as they say Ruckley") and the mother's maiden name as Ayres. On the baptisms of Mary Ann, Jane Ayres and James, John Rookley's occupation is described as a Husbandman (a person who cultivates the land; a farmer), obviously employed casually, but on those of Elizabeth, William, Sarah, Henry, Thomas, Thomasin, Eliza and Anna, he's a Labourer.

In 1841, John Ruckley (45) was in the Devon County House Of Correction, St David's, Exeter, having earned a 6 month sentence for Larceny. Mary and the children don't appear anywhere on this census that I can find.

We do find the family in 1851, when they are listed, unhelpfully, as living in "Village, Kentisbeare". John Rookley (56) is a Farmer of 22 Acres, with the household consisting wife Mary (52), William (19) and Henry (12) Employed on the farm; Thomas (10), Thomasin (8), Eliza (6) and Hannah (Anna) (4).

Mary Rookley died at 59 in 1859 J Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 282 and was buried on 27 Apr 1859 in Kentisbeare churchyard.

In 1861, listed as John Rockley (sic) (67), widowed, Retired Farmer, was living at Gaddford Hills, Kentisbeare, Devon.

In 1871, John Rookley (78), Farm Labourer, was living at "Moor, Kentisbeare" (Kentis Moor) in the household of James and Thomasin Ridgeway. 

John Rookely died, still said to be aged 78, in 1871 J Quarter in TIVERTON Volume 05B Page 279 and was buried on 14 May 1871, in Kentisbeare.
