In 1841, Joseph Jerred (44), Sarah Jerred (37), John Jerred (6), James Jerred (4) and Maria Jerred (1), were living at Willses, Thorverton. Mary Jerred (10) was in the employ of Richard Vinicombe at Lee Cross Farm, Thorverton. William (8) (listed as William Gerad) was living with his grandparents, William and Mary Elworthy, at Village Cottage, Stockleigh Pomeroy.

Joseph Jerrard (sic) died - his age at death was estimated to 55 - in 1847 D Quarter in TIVERTON AND DULVERTON Volume 10 Page 171 and he was buried on 18 Nov 1847, at St Thomas a Becket, Thorverton.

In 1851, Sarah Jerrad (sic) (48) Widow, from Stockleigh, Devonshire, was in Silver Street, Thorverton, with her occupation listed as 'Work in Fields'. William Jerred (17) Shoemaker (Apprentice) was still with his grandparents in Stockleigh Pomeroy; John Jerred (16) was employed as a farm servant to Samuel Kingdon, Farmer of 150 Acres, at Lynch House, Thorverton. (Lynch Farm, to the west of the village still exists); James Jared (sic) (14) was a Farm Labourer in the household of William Hosgood (76) at Starkisses Farm, Raddon, Thorverton, Devon and Elizabeth Jerred (9) Scholar, was living in the household of William and Elizabeth Wotton in Cheriton Fitzpaine Village, listed as their Niece. On 7 Aug 1853 at the Parish church of Thorverton, Sarah Jerrard (sic) Widow, daughter of William Elsworthy (sic), married Thomas Walter (sic) Widower, both of Silver Street, Thorverton. Actually Thomas Walker, he had previously married Sarah Way, in Thorverton, on 27 Mar 1826. (Thomas wasn't going to get his wives first names mixed up, at least.) In 1851, Thomas wife, Sarah, was shown as being born 1802 in Poughill, Devonshire. There is a death of a Sarah Walters (sic) in 1852, aged 50, which would appear to relate.

In 1861, Thomas Walker (59) Ag Lab and 2nd wife Sarah Walker (56) born in Stockleigh, Devon, were still living in Silver Street, Thorverton. James Jerred (24) Carter was at Yellowford Farm, Yellowford Lane, Thorverton in the employ of Thomas Potter (58) Yeoman Farmer; Elizabeth Jerred (19) Dressmaker, was still living with her aunt and uncle in Cheriton Fitzpaine.

John Jerred (b. 1833) son of Joseph Jerred and Sarah Elsworthy, married Frances Ann Orchard (bap. 3 Jul 1831 in Dulverton, Somerset), daughter of James Orchard and Elizabeth How, on 20 May 1862, at the Parish Church of St Thomas a Becket, in the village of Thorverton, Devon, as both of them resided in the parish. John's occupation was listed on marriage as Cooper.

John and Frances had two children:
  1. Lewis Jerrad (sic) b. in the 2nd quarter of 1863
  2. Frances Mary Jerrad (sic) b. 3 May 1869, in St Thomas, Exeter
In 1871, the family were living in Sowton, Devon, with John (35) employed as a gardener. But, by 1881, they had moved to Church Cottage, Halberton and John (46) had gone back to being an Agricultural Labourer. Daughter Frances Mary was still at home, but her brother had left home.

In 1891, John Jerred (56), still working as an Ag Lab, and Frances Ann were living at Court Cottage, Corner, Halberton. Frances Mary Jerred was working as a Servant to Alfred T Gregory in Alsa Terrace, Tiverton.

In 1901, John (66), once more working as a gardener, and Frances Ann (69), had moved into the centre of Tiverton to 12, Hammetts Square. Frances Mary Jerred (31) was working as a Cook for Rev. Donald M Owen, Clergyman in the Church of England, at 25, Bampton Street, Tiverton. (That address is now an ugly modern building in use as the Royal Mail Tiverton Delivery Office.)

In 1911, John (78), with No Occupation, and Frances (79), were living at 1 The Homes, Old Blundell's, Tiverton. (Alms Houses?) This census confirmed they'd been married 49 years and had two children, both still living.

John Jerred died, aged 78, in 1911 J Qtr in TIVERTON Vol 05B Page 263.

I can find no record of the death of Frances Ann Jerred.

Francis Stone (Frank) (b. 1 Feb 1867) son of Henry Stone and Mary Ridgeway, married Frances Mary Jerred (b. 3 May 1869), daughter of John Jerred and Frances Ann Orchard, always known to my father as "Aunt France", although if we were being pedantic, she was his father's aunt, his great-aunt. The couple married at St Peter’s Church Tiverton on 9 Apr 1902. Witnesses were the bride's father, John Jerred and a Bessie Louisa Corrick. Francis and Frances, at 34 and 33, respectively, married late by the standards of the day, and this may have been a factor toward the couple not having children.

In 1911, Frank Stone (42) Farm Labourer and Frances Mary Stone (42) were living at Middle Pitt, Sampford Peverell.

In 1921, still at Middle Pitt Westleigh, Wellington, Sampford Peverell, Devon were Francis Stone (53) Farm Carter and Frances Mary Stone (52).

Francis Stone, of Middle Pitt Cottage, Sampford Peverell, died on 18 Nov 1937, aged 70, leaving £517 13s 11d to Frances Mary Stone.

In 1939, Frances Mary Stone, Old Age Pensioner, was living at 2 Sunnidale, Willand, Devon.

Frances Mary Stone, of 44 High Street, Halberton, Devon died on 11 Aug 1962 at the ripe old age of 93. She didn't have much money left (~£75).

Francis and Frances are buried together in the churchyard at Uplowman.

In 1888, Louis Jerrad (sic) married Mary Elizabeth Williams (born in St Erth, Cornwall), in Christchurch, Hampshire (now Christchurch, Dorset).

The son of John Jerred and Frances Ann Orchard and elder brother of Frances Mary Jerred, Louis Jerred (as he was often listed), born in Silverton, Devon, was actually registered as Lewis Jerrad (sic) in the 2nd quarter of 1863. In 1871, aged 8, he was with the family in Sowton, but in 1881, Louis Jerred (18) was a Baker's Apprentice to George Hannabus, Master Confectioner, in Angel Hill, Tiverton. (George Hannabus was from Cadbury, Devon, which might have inspired a good name for a confectionery business ...)

Mary Elizabeth, a Domestic, was the daughter of John Williams, a Tin Miner, and his wife Honor, of 2, Greenwich, St Erth, Penzance, Cornwall in 1881.

Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Jerred had six children:
  1. Ernest John Jerred b. 27 Feb 1891 in Bournemouth, Hampshire
  2. Arthur Jerred b, 1893 M Qtr in KINGSBRIDGE Vol 05B Page 194
  3. Ethel May Jerred b. 1896 M Qtr in KINGSBRIDGE Vol 05B Page 189
  4. Albert William Jerred b. 9 July 1898 in KINGSBRIDGE Vol 05B 184
  5. Honor Frances Jerred b. 1900 J Qtr in KINGSBRIDGE Vol 05B Page 169
  6. Violet Mary Jerred b. 15 July 1903 in KINGSBRIDGE Vol 05B Page 164
Louis and Mary Elizabeth are elusive in 1891, but their first child had been born that year, in Boscombe, historically Hampshire, today in Dorset.

By 1893, they'd moved back to the south west to settle at Loddiswell, near Kingsbridge in Devon. There in 1901, listed as Lewis Jerred (36), Railway Labourer, with Mary E Jerred (38), Ernest J Jerred (11), Arthur Jerred (8), Ethel M Jerred (5), Albert W Jerred (2) and Honor F Jerred (0).

In 1911, still in Loddiswell, Devon, were Lewis Jerred (46) Railway Labourer; Mary Elizabeth Jerred (48), Ethel May Jerred (15), Alfred William Jerred (12), Honor Frances Jerred (10) and Violet Mary Jerred (7). Ernest John Jerred (20) had joined the Royal Navy in 1909, as a Stoker, and was with the Royal Navy At Sea And In Ports Abroad with HMS Edgar (1890). Not found Arthur.

In 1921, Lewis Jerred (56) Railway Labourer for the Great Western Railway Company was living at Quarry Park, Loddiswell, Devon with Mary Elizabeth Jerred (58), Albert William Jerred (22) Farm Labourer Out of Work and Violet Jerred (17) who was employed doing garden work at a nursery.

Mary Elizabeth Jerred died in 1931 S Qtr in KINGSBRIDGE.

In 1939, Lewis Jerred was living at 36 Wallingford Road, Kingsbridge

The Great Western Railway (GWR) had opened the Kingsbridge branch line in 1893 and it was closed in 1963. Lewis Jerred, who died in 1951 J Quarter in KINGSBRIDGE, at the age of 88, thankfully, won't have seen the closure.
