John Horn and Emma Green and Emily Grace Rudd

John Horn (John Isaac Robert Horn, b. 18 Jul 1845, bap. 31 Aug 1845 at St George in the East church in St George-in-the-East), son of Isaac Horn and Maria Thaxter, married Emma Green, daughter of Edward Green and Eliza Goodman, at St Thomas' church, Arbour Square, Stepney on 4 Nov 1867. 

The couple had three children:

2. Edward John Horn b. 1871 M Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 01C Page 472. Died 1871 S Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 01C Page 305
3. Albert William Horn b. 1872 S Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 01C Page 413. Died in 1905 J Quarter in POPLAR Volume 01C Page 316, aged 32.

After the death of Emma's father, Edward Green, landlord of the King and Queen in St George in the East, in 1870, her mother took over as landlady. In 1871, living with her was daughter, Emma Horn (22), Barmaid and Son-in-law, John Horn (23), Plumber, Emma Horn (2) and Edward J Horn (0).

In July 1875, John Horn was listed, by the East London Observer, as the Incoming Licensee at the Watermans Arms, Wapping High Street, E1, which he held until 22nd January 1876. Then on 20 May 1876, the same publication lists John Horn as the incoming licensee at the Salisbury Arms (The Salisbury Arms stood at 135 Eastfield Street, Limehouse, E14. Now demolished).

In 1881, at 135, Eastfield Street, Limehouse, Stepney, were John Horn (35), wife listed as J Horn (33) and children; Emma (12) and Albert William (8). 

Emma Horn died, aged 37, in St. Olave Southwark, London, in 1885.

In 1889, in London City, John Horn married Emily Grace Rudd (b. 8 Jul 1857), daughter of Samms Sheppard Rudd and Mary Sarah Ann Walrond. 

By 1891, John Horn (age listed as 33) was "Living on his own means" in Apsley Road, Croydon, Surrey, with new wife Emily Grace Horn (31) from Hoxton, and son, Albert William Horn (18) from his first marriage. 

John and Emily Grace added a further four children:

John Horn was at the Albert Tavern, 67 Harrington Road, South Norwood, in 1896. In 1901, John Horn (52) Retired Publican was living 6, Harrington Road, Croydon, Surrey, with wife, Emily Grace Horn (42), son Albert Horn (28) Labourer, daughter Emily Margaret (8) and son Edward John (1).

John Horn died, on Leap Day, 29 Feb 1904 (1904 M Quarter in CROYDON Volume 02A Page 224), "After Long & Patient Suffering", aged 58. He is buried at Dulwich Old Cemetery, along with his second wife and his daughter, Emma Eliza, from his first marriage to Emma Green. Their son, Albert William Horn, died in 1905, at 32. 

In 1911, Emily Grace Horn (52), widow, was still living at 6, Harrington Road, Croydon, with daughter Emily Margaret (18) and sons Edward John (11) and Alfred George (9). 

In 1921, at 6, Harrington Road, Croydon, were Emily Grace Horn (60), Edward John Horn (21), Alfred George Horn (19) and Emma Nash (82) Visitor, Aunt.

Emily Grace Horn was also still at 6, Harrington Road, Croydon in 1939, aged 82, along with her granddaughter, Ivy Carter (24) Domestic Servant. 

Emily Grace Horn, of 19 Macclesfield Road, Woodside, Croydon, widow, died on 7 Aug 1950, at 93. Probate was granted to Edward John Horn, engineer, and Alfred George Horn, fitter. She was buried with her late husband.

In 2021 was closed and likely to be re-developed as housing.

• Emily Margaret Horn married Bert Carter (b. 23 Feb 1893) at St Luke's Church, Woodside, Croydon, on 20 Dec 1914. Witnesses were Emily Grace Horn and Alfred Lawrence. The couple had at least six children between 1915 and 1926. In 1939, the family were living at 19 Macclesfield Road, Croydon. Emily Margaret Carter died, at 89, in Croydon, in 1982.
• Edward John Horn married Ivy Gladys Henderson (b. 3 Oct 1895 in Hackney), daughter of James Frederick Henderson and Alice Susan Hann, in Lewisham, in 1926. They had one daughter, born 1938. Edward J Horn, Electrical Engineer and Ivy G Horn were living at 73 Seekhurst Road, Beckenham in 1939. 
• Alfred George Horn (30) son of John Horn (Publican, deceased), married Ellen Doris Ball (b. 5 Aug 1905), daughter of Charles Ball and Alice Margaret Jackson, at St Mark's, South Norwood, on 22 Nov 1932. Witnesses were Emily Grace Horn and Alice Margaret Harman. Alfred and Ellen had one daughter, Janet Horn b. 1933. In 1939, they were living at 3 Cassland Road, Croydon, Surrey. Alfred George Horn (b. 1 Jan 1902) died in Tonbridge, Kent in the 1st quarter of 1971. Ellen Doris Horn (b. 5 Aug 1905) died in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in the 4th quarter of 1989.

Samuel Heywood and Emma Eliza Horn

Samuel Heywood (b. 1865 in Bermondsey), son of William Haywood and Jane Harris, married Emma Eliza Horn (b. 1868 in St George in the East), daughter of John Horn and Emma Green, on 29 Oct 1888, in Newington, Southwark St Saviour. (William Haywood, a Tanner, was originally from Devonshire.)

In 1891, Samuel Haywood (26) General Labourer and Emma Haywood (23) were living in Abbey Street, Bermondsey. (The street takes its name from the former Bermondsey Priory that occupied this site until the Reformation.)

Samuel and Emma had one daughter: 

1. Emma Edith Haywood b. 1892 J Quarter in SAINT OLAVE SOUTHWARK Volume 01D Page 233, but who sadly died in the same quarter.

Samuel Heywood died, at 36, in 1902 M Qtr in CROYDON Vol 02A 189.

In the 2nd Qtr of 1904, Emma Eliza Heywood remarried to William Henry Mann, at St Thomas, Stepney, that had stood in Arbour Square, Stepney.

William Henry Mann (b. 1 Apr 1863, bap. 31 May 1863 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk), son of Charles Ditcham Mann, Sailmaker, and Ann Lee, was a widower when he married Emma Eliza Heywood. His first marriage, on 6 Jul 1887, at St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (now Great Yarmouth Minster) was to Emma Eliza Jackson (b. 1866 in Medway, Kent (Chatham), daughter of William Jackson, Carpenter, and Maria Bratt. The first Mrs Emma Eliza Mann (née Jackson) had died, in 1904 M Quarter in POPLAR Volume 01C Page 328. That William Henry remarried within three months, was probably to provide care for his four children from his first marriage:

In 1911, William Henry Mann (48) Fishmonger from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk was living in Bow Common with the second Emma Eliza Mann (formerly Heywood, née Horn) (43) whose birthplace was curiously not listed (with the same two first names and only a two year difference in the birth years of his two wives, it would be easy to assume this was one person); Prudence Sarah Mann (16) and Maria Julia Mann (13), both born in Old Ford. 

Sarah Eliza Prudence Mann died, at 21, in 1916 M Quarter in POPLAR. 

Emma Eliza Mann (formerly Heywood, née Horn) died, at 48, on 24 May 1916 J Quarter in POPLAR Volume 01C Page 444. She was buried at Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries, with her father, John Horn, and step-mother.

Private William Henry Mann, Lancashire Fusiliers, son of William Henry Mann, of 78, Harley Rd, Great Yarmouth, died, aged 27, on 21 Mar 1918, the first day of the German spring offensive on the Western Front during the First World War. He is commemorated at the Pozières Memorial.

William Henry Mann died on 17 Mar 1939, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk and left his effects to Maria Louisa Julia Mann and George Edward Todd.

Thomas Back (Thomas Drake) and Elizabeth Mary Horn

Thomas Back, son of Thomas Back and Mary Drake married Elizabeth Mary Horn (b. 1859 in Okehampton, Devon), daughter of James Horn and Elizabeth Bolt, on 23 Oct 1884 at St Paul's Church, Devonport. (The Anglican Church of Saint Paul the Apostle was situated on the east side of Morice Square.)

Born Thomas Drake (1850 D Quarter in STOKE DAMEREL Volume 09 Page 429), as he was named Thomas, it did seem likely that he was the son of Thomas Back, who his mother married two years later. He started life in Stoke Damerel Workhouse, where he was in 1851 with his mother and his older (half) siblings, Mary and George. He was subsequently known as Thomas Back and on his marriage certificate in 1884, as Thomas Back, Stoker RN, lists his address as 40, Cannon Street, Devonport - the very same address where we find both his parents and his sister in 1881, so we can be sure it's him - and names his father as Thomas Back, Labourer. Of course, this could simply be because that was the man who was around as he was growing up, but actually being named after him at birth, seems to confirm what we're being told.

Thomas Back, DOB 15 Oct 1850 (agrees with the quarter of his birth registration), enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1865, volunteering at HMS Implacable (1805) - former Duguay-Trouin, turned training ship (exactly the same ship, on exactly the same day as my great-grandfather, David Jones). Thomas Back's naval career does not appear to progress at this point, there being no entries beyond enlistment. 

There is then a record of a Thomas Back from Devonport, with date of birth given as 14 Oct 1849 (one year and one day of difference and this time the year does NOT agree with his birth registration), but we know this is our man from other records (marriage, census), who joined the Royal Navy on 9 Jan 1873 and served for 21 years, until 27 Apr 1894. He began as a Stoker 2nd Class, moved up to Stoker, Leading Stoker and Leading Stoker 1st Class.

Both naval records list Thomas as having Black hair and Hazel eyes. He was 4 ft 10 in at 14 and grew to 5 ft 6 in as an adult, gaining a bunch of tattoos.

From May 1873 to Aug 1875, Thomas was with HMS Agincourt (1865) at Portland, Dorset and, during that time, spent 28 days in Dorchester Gaol (HM Prison Dorchester) - Pure Victorian detention in all it’s glory.

At the time of the census of 1881, Thomas Back (30) Stoker, was moored in Hong Kong aboard HMS Victor Emmanuel (1855), which ship he was assigned to from Jun 1880 to Jan 1882, Feb 1882 to Jan 1883 and again from Feb to Apr 1883 (transferring to HMS Pegasus (1878) for the month in 1882, also in China and HMS Albatross (1873) in Jan 1883).

Two days before his marriage, Thomas joined HMS Tamar (1863), commissioned at Devonport on 21 Oct 1884 and then, from 15 Jan 1885 until 22 Jan 1889, was with HMS Nelson (1876). She sailed for the Australia Station after commissioning and became the flagship there in 1885. She was in Sydney and Brisbane and at the Woolloomooloo Bay Regatta on 18 Apr 1885, remaining on station until returning home in January 1889.

Thomas and Elizabeth's only child was born later that year:

Thomas spent time with HMS Magicienne (1888) in Portsmouth in 1890; HMS Goshawk (1872) took him to Gibraltar from May 1890 to Jun 1892 and while he was away, Elizabeth M Back (31) Wife Of A Stoker RN and Lilian M Back (1) were living in St Levan Road, Devonport. Thomas finished his career, from Dec 1892 to Apr 1894, at HMS Vivid II, the Stokers and Engine Room Artificers School in Devonport, before being pensioned.

In 1901, Thomas Back (50) Naval Pensioner was living in Avondale Terrace, Devonport with wife, Elizabeth M Back (41), daughter, Lilian M Back (11) and John Cornhill (29) General Labourer from Ireland, Boarder.

Thomas Back died in 1906 D Quarter in DEVONPORT Volume 05B Page 220. His age was estimated as 58 (he was 56), gaining yet another year on top of the one he added the second time he enlisted in the Navy.

In 1911, Elizabeth Back (51) Widow from Okehampton, Devonshire, was living in East Stonehouse. Living with her were recently married, son-in-law and daughter, Charles and Lilian Renshaw.

In 1921, Elizabeth Mary Back was still living with Charles and Lilian Renshaw (and their two daughters), at 7 Duckworth Street, Devonport.

Elizabeth Mary Back died, at 66, in 1926 M Quarter in DEVONPORT.

Isaac Horn and Maria Agnes Thaxter

Isaac Horn (b. 1803, bap. 3 Aug 1806 in Thatcham, Berkshire), son of John Horn and Lucy Buckeridge, married Maria Agnes Thaxter at Christ Church Watney Street, St George in the East, in 1842. Born 6 Jan 1824 and bap. 21 Mar 1824 at St George in the East, Stepney, Maria was the daughter of William Thaxter, Labourer in the East India Docks and his wife, Maria. 

Isaac and Maria had seven children:

On all of the baptisms, Isaac Horn is listed as a Plumber. 

On William's baptism in 1842, their address was 39 Lower Cornwell St and on John's in 1845, 29 Lower Cornwell St. On George's baptism in 1848, their address was 5 Back Road and on Isaac's in 1856, it was 5 China Place. 

In 1851, at China Place, Back Road (so the addresses on George's and Isaac's baptisms was the same place), were Isaac Horn (46) Plumber, although it gave his birthplace a Chippenham, Wiltshire; Maria Horn (27) Coffee Shop Keeper; William Horn (8), John Horn (5) and Edwin [they mean Edmund] (0).

In 1861, at 5, Back Road, St George in the East, were Isaac Horn (56) Plumber and Painter, again with his birthplace listed as Chippenham, Wiltshire; Maria Horn (listed as 51, but she was only 37); William Horn (18) Plumber; John Horn (16) Plumber; Isaac Horn (5) and Lucy Horn (3).

Maria Horn died, at 39, in 1862 D Quarter Volume 01C Page 367.

In 1871, Isaac Horn (67) Widower, was Coffee House Keeper at 333 Cable Street. Living with him were William Horn (24) Plumber; Isaac Horn (15) Plumber and Lucy Horn (14). At one time each part of the street bore different names, with Back Road being one of them, so it seems likely they'd been in the same premises since at least 1848. This time, Isaac's birthplace is listed as Thatcham, Berkshire. Why it had previously been given as Chippenham, Wiltshire, isn't obvious, but twice isn't an error. The two places are around 50 miles apart, so if I had to speculate, perhaps Isaac was born in Chippenham, then (given the delay) baptised and brought up in Thatcham.

Coffee Houses were a thing of the 17th and 18th centuries, places that no “respectable” woman was able to enter and many were haunts for criminals and prostitutes. By the 19th century, coffee houses had declined.

Isaac Horn, age overestimated to 75, died on 20 Mar 1874 (1874 M Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 01C Page 328).
