Winnall Travally Dalton and Ann Woolfe

Winnall Travally Dalton (b. 28 July 1766 in Limehouse), son of William Dalton and Sarah Travally, married Ann Woolfe (bap. 21 Jul 1769 in Hitchin, Herts), daughter of Thomas Woolfe and Martha Bray, at Southwark St Saviour (now Southwark Cathedral) on 30 Nov 1794. However, the banns of this marriage state that Winnall Dalton was Widowed. Winnall Travally Dalton then of the parish of St Paul, Shadwell, had first married Elizabeth Crutchfield then of the parish of St. Mary, Stratford le Bow, Spinster, by Licence, in the parish of All Saints, Poplar on 7 Aug 1792. We know that this marriage relates, as the witnesses included William Dalton and Sarah Dalton, the groom's parents. On 9 Oct 1792 an Elizabeth Dalton, described merely as 'Woman (Fever)' was buried at St Giles Without Cripplegate and this sadly appears to relate.

Winnall Travally Dalton and Ann Woolfe had ten children:

The birth records for the first nine children, all born in Church Lane, in the parish of St Anne Limehouse are of Non-Conformists - 'Dissenters'. These records, which list the maternal grandparents, are from Dr Williams' Library Registry; Registers of certificates, an early birth register of Protestant dissenters. (‘Dissenting’ tradition in Stepney.) Each birth has two witnesses: Sarah Dalton, I presume Winnall's mother, was one of the witnesses on most of the births. Ann Spokes was witness also to the first three; from John onwards, one of them was an Elizabeth Spinks and at Mary Emma Dalton's birth in 1809, one of the witnesses was Winnall's cousin, Esther Evans.

Phillip James' baptism record lists his father's occupation as Caulker.

In 1792, Winnall Dalton, Caulker, of Shadwell, Middlesex, took on James Carrington as an Apprentice; and in 1795 Winnall Dalton, Caulker, of St Paul Shadwell, records show, took on another Apprentice, Edward Barrow.

There is a record of Winnall Dalton being brought into custody and discharged at Marshalsea on 9 Oct 1820 in respect to a suit - presumably for a debt - brought by a William and Sarah Wright. This is the same Debtors' prison where Charles Dickens' father was committed four years later in 1824.

Winnall Travally Dalton died in 1825, aged 59 and was buried on 5 Jun 1825 at St Anne's Limehouse.

In 1841, Ann Dalton (70) Widow of Independent means was living at 16 Holmes Street, St Dunstan Stepney, with daughter Martha Dalton (35) Milliner; son Phillip James Dalton (25) Vellum Binder and a Jane Gray (20) Milliner, presumably a boarder. (All ages rounded down.)

Ann Dalton (80) of 16 Holmes St, Stepney, died in 1850 M Qtr in STEPNEY Vol 02 Page 368 and was buried on 12 Jan 1850 in Tower Hamlets.

Henry Gabbedy and Ann Stewart (née Causton)

Henry Gabbedy (b. Wednesday, 19 Sep 1705, bap. 7 Oct 1705 at St Dunstan's, Stepney), then from the parish of St Anne's Limehouse, Ship's Carpenter, son of Henry Gabbedy and Hannah Peters, married Anne Stewart, at the Collegiate Church of St Katherine By the Tower, City of London on 6 Sep 1737. (St Katharine by the Tower on map c. 1720. This church was demolished in 1825 to make way for St Katharine Docks, which were named after it.) The marriage record erroneously calls her Mary and Henry's occupation on the licence I'm sure is wrong and should say Ship's Caulker. The rest is true. Crucially, the record of their marriage and the licence make it clear that Henry was a widower, aged 32 and Ann was a widow, aged 30.

Born Ann Causton (b. 1707, bap. 15 Jan 1711 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, aged 5 years), she was the daughter of James Causton and Parthenia Clarke. ("Parthenia" is a Greek word meaning "virginity" or "maidenhood." It's derived from the Ancient Greek word "parthénos" (παρθένος), which means "virgo" or "virgin". Parthenia is sometimes used as a given name for girls, particularly those with Greek heritage.) Further proof of this link: Ann's sister, Parthenia Quick, left £5.00 in her will to her nephew, John Gabbaday. (It has been claimed that Ann had previously married at St Andrew, Holborn on 31 Oct 1727, however that marriage can be discounted, because Charles Stewart had, in fact, married Ann Barnes, Spinster.) The correct previous marriage, I believe, is that between James Stewart and Ann Coston (sic) at St Mary's Church, Bromley St Leonard's (more about this church here) - this church is also in the right area, where Holborn isn't - on 15 Jan 1729. It hasn't been possible to tell if the couple had children, nor to find James' death.

Henry Gabedey (sic) of the Parish of St Dunstan's, Stepney, Bat[chelor], had previously married Bridget Ward (said to be b. 1705, daughter of William Ward) of the same, Sp[inster], at St Botolph's Aldgate, on 22 Sep 1728.

Henry and Bridget Gabbedy had two sons:

1. Thomas Gabbedey b. Monday, 15 Sep 1729, son of Henry Gabbedey, Caulker, & Bridget, bap. 13 Oct 1729 (aged 28 days) at St Dunstan's
2. Henry Gabedy (sic) b. Sunday, 16 May 1731, son of Henry Gabedy (sic) of Pop[lar], Caulker, & Bridget, bap. 6 Jun 1731 (at 21 days old) at St Dunstan's, Stepney

As Henry and Ann later name another son Thomas and, as these are not mentioned in Henry's will, I have to assume that both died in infancy.

Bridget Gabeday was buried, in Stepney, on 2 Jul 1731.

Henry and Ann Gabbedy then went on to have a further seven children:

4. Jane Gabedey b. Saturday, 27 Sep 1740, daughter of Henry Gabedey, Caulker, Limehouse Causeway and Anne was bap. 19 Oct 1740 (at 22 days old) at St Anne's Limehouse
5. James Gabedey b. Wednesday, 10 Mar 1742, son of Henry Gabedy, Caulker, L.H. Causeway & Anne was bap. 4 Apr 1742 (at 25 days old) at St Anne's Limehouse
6. Thomas Gabedey b. Tuesday, 23 Aug 1743, son of Henry Gabedey, Caulker of L.H. Causeway & Anne, bap. 18 Sep 1743 (at 26 days old) at St Anne's Limehouse. Thomas, son of Henry Gabdey, Caulker, Rotherhithe, Drowned, buried 30 Aug 1749 at St Anne's Limehouse.
7. John Gabdey (sic) b. Saturday, 20 July 1745, son of Henry Gabdey, Caulker, Limeh[ouse] Causeway & Anne, was bap. 11 Aug 1745 (at 22 days old) at St Anne's Limehouse
8. George Gabedey b. Wednesday, 21 Jan 1747, son of Henry Gabedey, Caulker, Limehouse Causeway & Anne, bap. 14 Feb 1747 (at 24 days old) at St Anne's Limehouse. George, son of Henry Gabedey of Limehouse Causeway, buried 1 Mar 1747 at St Anne's Limehouse
9. Anne Gabady (sic) b. Wednesday, 23 Aug 1749, Anne of Henry & Anne Gabady, bap. 2 Sep 1749 (at 10 days old) at St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe. Not found burial, but presume died as an infant.

Ann Gabedy of Middle Turning [Shadwell] was buried at St Paul's Church, Shadwell (Burial ground. St Paul Shadwell) on 26 July 1753. (Others have suggested this as the burial of their child, but the church records consistently list deceased children as 'son/daughter of ...' and this doesn't, so I'm confident that it's the burial of Ann Gabedey, formerly Stewart (née Causton).

Henry Gabedey of the Parish of St Paul's Shadwell, Caulker, wrote his will on 10 Aug 1753, "being weak of body, but of sound and disposing mind ..." It seemed obvious that Ann had pre-deceased him when he left his estate to be divided equally between his three [surviving] children: Jane Gabedy, James Gabedy and John Gabedy. He appointed his sisters (Ann's sisters, his sisters-in-law) Parthenia Quick and Hester Causton as joint Executrixes.

Henry Gabbedy of Middle Turning was buried at St Paul's, Shadwell on 3 Oct 1753. Whilst there are no details on their causes of death, Ann will have been 46 and Henry 48. Henry "weak of body", was clearly ill. That both died within a short time of each other might point to a common pathogen. Consumption (Tuberculosis) always springs to mind, however, Smallpox was probably the single most lethal disease in eighteenth-century Britain, accounting for approximately 10% of all burials. The London Smallpox Hospital, one of the first of its kind in Europe, [coincidentally] was established in 1753.

"By the mid-eighteenth century, many houses in Shadwell had been rebuilt. "Seamen, watermen and lightermen, coalheavers and shopkeepers, and ropemakers, coopers, carpenters and smiths, lived in small lathe and plaster or weatherboard houses, two storeys and a garret high, with one room on each floor"; the average rent was £2/7/0." - Cox, Jane (November 2013). Old East Enders: A History of Tower Hamlets. [Via] A Land Tax Record in 1753 shows that Henry Gabedey was paying £5.00 in rent, so they were very much at the upper end of the average for the area - until illness struck them down.

There are indications to suggest that Hester took on the care of the children. Jane will have been 13, James 11 and John just 8, when their parents died.

Middle Turning was a narrow lane or alley in Shadwell, which existed in the 1750s or before. You can see it here on the map, running l-to-r between Shakespears Walk and Spring Street, south of the churchyard, below Upper Turning. "In the 1840s, half of the churchyard land was bought by the London Dock Company in a compulsory purchase order, in order to expand Shadwell Basin." [Source] This may mean that Henry and Ann are no longer resting there. Moreover, you can also deduce by comparing to the present day map, that the area they were living in is now under the waters of the basin.

Philip Gilbert and Susanna Perry

Philip Gilbert of the Parish of Woolwich in the County of Kent, Widower & Susanna Perry (b. 1 Mar 1715 in Woolwich), daughter of Philip Perry and Elizabeth Flemming, of Poplar in the Parish of St Dunstan Stepney in the County of Middlesex, Spinster, were married, by Licence, at St Dionis Backchurch in the City of London [the same church were her brother Philip Perry and sister Elizabeth Perry had also married] on 11 Aug 1743.

Philip and Susanna Gilbert had four children:

1. Philip Gilbert b. 18 Jun 1744, bap. 5 Jul 1744 at St Mary, Woolwich
2. Susanna Gilbert bap. 16 Aug 1745 at St Mary's Church, Chatham, Kent
3. Elizabeth Gilbert bap. 2 Jun 1748 at St Mary's, Chatham. Elizabeth Gilbert, an Infant, buried at St Mary's, Chatham on 8 Jul 1748.
4. Ann Gilbert bap. 11 Sep 1751 at St Mary's, Chatham

On 13 May 1743, Philip Gilbert of Woolwich, Kent, Shipwright, took as an apprentice Will, son of Will Reed. And on 7 Mar 1744, Phillip Gilbert of Chatham, Kent, Shipwright, took apprentice, Rich, son of Henry Everall.

No ordinary shipwright, Phillip Gilbert, held the position of Assistant Master Shipwright at three major Royal Navy dockyards. Having been appointed Master Caulker at Woolwich Dockyard in 1730, he was appointed Assistant Master Shipwright at Woolwich in 1732; in 1740, he was appointed Assistant Master Shipwright at Deptford Dockyard, then again appointed Assistant Master Shipwright at Woolwich Dockyard. Finally, from 1744 until his death in 1751, he was Assistant Master Shipwright at Chatham Dockyard.

As stated on the marriage record, Philip Gilbert was a Widower when he married Susanna Perry. Philip Gilbert previously married Margaret Watkins at St Mary the Virgin, Lewisham on 5 Aug 1725. It appears that this couple had two daughters: Catherine Gilbert b. 30 Nov 1726, bap. 15 Dec 1726 at All Hallows-by-the-Tower and Sarah Gilbert bap. 17 Aug 1731 at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich. Both baptisms list the parents as Philip and Margaret. However, "Margaret wife of Mr Phillip Gilbert Assistant [Ship]Builder at Woolwich" was buried at Saint Nicholas, Deptford on 13 Aug 1739.

Philip Gilbert was buried at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on 29 Sep 1751.

The Will of Philip Gilbert of Woolwich had been drawn up in 1736, before the death of his first wife. In it he had left one pound one shilling to his brother Samuel Gilbert. The remainder of his possessions he left to his then 'loving wife Margaret Gilbert' and after her decease 'to my children born of her body to be equally divided between the then surviving children'. He had also appointed Margaret executor. Susanna's brother, John Perry and her brother-in-law, John Brown, appeared on her behalf and accordingly Administration of the Will was granted to Susanna Gilbert, Widow on 7 Oct 1751.

In her own Will, drafted on 16 Nov 1774, Susana Gilbert Widow and Solo Administrator of Philip Gilbert late of Chatham in the County of Kent Assistant [Ship]Builder at His Majesty's Yard there, left a Silver Tankard to her son Philip Gilbert; she also left bequests to her grandson, John Gilbert; her daughter Susanna Nuttall (including a pair of silver salts and salt spoons, a diamond ring that belonged to her late father, Philip Perry and another diamond ring from her late brother, John Perry); and to her daughter Ann Gilbert. She also left 'South Sea Annuities' to her nephew John Perry of Blackwall Esquire. She appointed her nephew John Perry and her sister Sarah Seehl as joint executors. Witnesses to her Will were E Brown (her sister Elizabeth, or Elizabeth's namesake daughter) and Joseph Hankey (who was married to her niece, Ann Perry, daughter of her late brother John).

The parish records of St Dunstan Stepney state that Susanna Gilbert of Poplar at 'Do' (Ditto, the same), was buried on 22 Jul 1777, presumably with her parents and siblings at Poplar Chapel (St Matthias Old Church).

Richard John Goss (b. 16 Jan 1792, bap. 27 May 1792 at St Anne's Limehouse), batchelor, son of Francis Goss, Shipwright, married Martha Ayres (b. 4 Sep 1796, bap. 9 Oct 1796 at St Dunstan's, Stepney), spinster, daughter of Elnathan Ayres and Elizabeth Perry, by banns and with the consent of parents, at St Anne's Limehouse on 30 Jul 1815. They were married by the Rev. James Rudge. Witnesses were John May and Ann Fisher.

This couple had five sons:

1. George Richard Goss b. 17 Jun 1816, bap. 26 Jul 1818 
2. William Henry Goss b. 18 Aug 1821, bap. 2 Sep 1821
3. Thomas Hoskins Goss b. 22 Aug 1826, bap. 12 Nov 1826. Died, at 37, in 1861 D Quarter in POPLAR UNION Volume 01C Page 455. Buried at the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery on 30 Dec 1861.
4. Richard John Goss b. 11 Jun 1827, bap. 30 Sep 1827 
5. Henry James Goss b. 25 Aug 1832, bap. 16 Sep 1832 

George and William were baptised at St Anne's Limehouse; Thomas, Richard and Henry, baptised at All Saints, Poplar. All of the baptisms list their father's occupation as Caulker and their parents as Richard John and Martha. 

In 1841, Richard Goss (45) Publican, was living at Ropemakers Fields, St Anne Limehouse, Stepney, London with Martha Goss (40), William Goss (15), Thomas Goss (10), Richard Goss (10), Henry Goss (5), Sarah Mason (20) F. S. [Female Servant]. Also, presumably boarding or lodging, were John Muir (20) Engineer; John Cook (25) Engineer; James Young (20) Shipwright; and James Jemmerson (40) Sail M[aker], all four from Scotland. Unfortunately, the census doesn't give the name of the pub, but there is evidence in London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1972, where Richard John Goss is listed at (another closed pub) The Three Mariners, Ropemakers Fields, in 1845.

In 1851, Richard Goss (59) had returned to being a Ship's Caulker and was residing at 7, Gates Street, Poplar, London with Martha Goss (55), Thomas Goss (26) Ship's Caulker and Henry Goss (19) Ship's Caulker. 

On 11 Jul 1853, Richard Goss, Caulker, from Limehouse, 63, 5ft 10in, was admitted to the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital (Seafarers Hospital Society), which was then still housed in "a decrepit wooden warship, moored in the River Thames at Greenwich", the former HMS Dreadnought (1801). Richard Goss remained in hospital until 3 Aug 1853, having fractured some ribs while working on the ship Earl of Balcarres (a British East Indiaman, launched in Bombay in 1815, sold to the Somes Brothers in 1848, who operated the ship in the India trade for a while) at the Somes Dock at Blackwall. 

In 1861, living at 14, Alfred Street, Poplar, were just Richard Goss (69) Ship's Caulker and Martha Goss (65). 

Richard John Goss of Northumberland Street, Poplar, died, aged 74, in 1866 M Quarter in POPLAR UNION Volume 01C Page 525 and was buried on 4 Mar 1866 at the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. 

Martha Goss died in 1870 S Quarter in STEPNEY Volume 01C Page 346 and was buried at City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery on 10 Sep 1870.

George Richard Goss (b. 17 Jun 1816, bap. 26 Jul 1818 at St Anne's Limehouse), son of Richard John Goss and Martha Ayres, married Elizabeth Wyatt in the 4th Quarter of 1837, in the district of Lewisham. (The certificate would confirm the date and venue, as well as Elizabeth's origins, however, it appears she was Elizabeth Wyatt b. 9 Jan 1816, bap. 10 Jan 1816 at St Alfege Church, Greenwich. Her parents, Charles Wyatt and Eleanor White had married at St Nicholas church, Deptford, on 24 Jan 1815, however, both had been previously widowed, so White wasn't her mother's maiden name.)

George and Elizabeth had nine children:

On the birth registration it was WHATHAN and on his baptism, Eluathan)

Mother's maiden name on the birth registrations is WYATT except the first, spelled WHYATT. The baptisms all list their father as George Richard Goss, Caulker, and include dates of birth. The baptisms in 1853 quote the family's address as Rich Street, Limehouse and in 1856, Dalgleish Street, Limehouse. Not found baptisms for Richard John, Thomas Hoskin or Henry.

In 1841, George Goss (~20) Caulker; Elizabeth Goss (~20) and George Goss (2) were living in Robert Street, Limehouse. (off the West India Dock Road, Robert Street was renamed Mandarin Street between 1938 and 1944.)

In 1851, living in Lower Rich Street, Limehouse were George R Goss (35) Ship's Caulker; Elizabeth Goss (35) from Greenwich, Kent; George R Goss (12), William J Goss (7), Charles A Goss (4), Richard J Goss (2) and Thomas H Goss (5m).

In 1861, living at 1, East Church Road, St Anne, Stepney were George R Goss (44) Ship's Caulker; Elizabeth Goss (45), William J Goss (17) Ship's Caulker; Charles A Goss (14) Ship's Caulker; Richard J Goss (12), Thomas H Goss (9), James E Goss (6), Edwin F Goss (4) and Henry Goss (1).

George Richard Goss died, aged 54, in 1869 J Quarter in POPLAR Vol 01C Page 448, buried, as Richard George Goss, of Barchester Street, Bromley on 28 Jun 1869 at the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery.

In 1871, Elizabeth Goss (55) Widow, Housekeeper, was living in Barchester Street, Bromley with sons: Richard John Goss (22) Ship's Caulker; Thomas H Goss (20) Apprentice Calker; Edwin F Goss (14) and Henry Goss (11). Also in the household was Caroline Segar (1) listed as Child Nurse. One assumes Elizabeth was nursing the child, presumably for some income.

In 1881, Elizabeth Goss (64) Widow was living at 6, Grove Street, Poplar with Edward Goss (24) [Edwin Francis Goss] and Caroline Goss (31) listed as her daughter, but was actually Caroline Whitrow, who became Elizabeth's daughter-in-law when she married Richard John Goss on 16 Aug 1881.

Elizabeth Goss died, at 71, in 1887 S Qtr in POPLAR Vol 01C Page 443.

Thomas Benbow Dalton and Mary Nedriff

Thomas Benbow Dalton (b. 6 May 1770 in Stepney), son of William Dalton and Sarah Travally, married Mary Nedriff (b. 22 Nov 1764, bap. 26 Nov 1764 at Southwark St John Horsleydown) daughter of Daniel Nedriff (Corn lighterman) and Sarah Belch, in the parish of Poplar, on 6 Jul 1790 at St. Mary, Stratford, Bow (Bow Church). The transcription of the marriage record suggests they were married at All Saints Church, Poplar, however, this cannot be true because All Saints wasn't built until 1821-3. The original marriage record confirms that they were married by A H Eccles, Rector (Allan Harrison Eccles, Rector of Bow Church, who died in post in 1801). Witnesses were William Dalton (groom's father or brother) and Richard Fleming. 

(Mary's parents, Daniel Nedriff, of St John, Southwark, lighterman, bachelor, above 22, and Sarah Belch, of Croydon, Spinster, above 18, were married in Little Bookham, Surrey, on 12 Jan 1754, with the consent of Nicholas Wood, of Leatherhead, Gent, the legal guardian of the said Sarah Belch.)

There are records of six children of Thomas and Mary Dalton:

1. Thomas Dalton b. 15 Apr 1791 in Stepney. Present at the birth was Sarah Dalton (Thomas Benbow Dalton's mother or sister).
2. William Dalton b. 21 Jan 1793 in Stepney. Present at the birth were Ann Levitt, Sarah Dalton and Mary Cock.
3. Charles Winnal Dalton b. 1 Jun 1795 in Stepney. Present at the birth were Ann Levitt, Sarah Dalton and Mary Jackson.
4. Mary Dalton b. 17 May 1797 in Stepney. Present at the birth were Elizabeth Witherby and Sarah Dalton.
5. Samuel Dalton b. 9 May 1799 in Stepney. Present at the birth were Sarah Dalton and Elizabeth Carrington.
6. Sarah Ann Dalton b. 23 Aug 1806 in Naval Row, Poplar. Present at the birth were Martha Gee of Poplar and Mary Dalton of Stepney, Aunt. Sarah Ann's birth record, at Dr Williams's Library, lists her maternal grandfather as Daniel Nedriff of Ramsgate, Kent, Gentleman. 

The first three boys were registered on 8 Feb 1797 in England & Wales Non-Conformist Births And Baptisms as Protestant dissenters. (‘Dissenting’ tradition in Stepney). Mary and Samuel were registered on 5 Dec 1799. 

On 25 Jun 1800, Thomas B Dalton of Poplar, Caulker, took Isaac Dadd as his apprentice. And in 1805, Thomas B Dalton of Blackwall, Caulker, took Samuel Yorke as an apprentice.

Sarah Ann's birth record lists her father as Thomas Dalton, Caulker, of 2 Naval Row, Poplar, Middlesex. Although Thomas' elder brother, Winnall Travally Dalton, also followed their father, William Dalton, as a ship's caulker, it appears that Thomas Benbow Dalton is who remained at what had been their father's address. Laid out in the early 19th century, Naval Row was a small terrace constructed c. 1782 by John Perry (1743-1810), owner of Blackwall Yard, where he built ships largely for the East India Company. From this, I'd assume that Thomas had also worked for Perry at the Blackwall Yard.

It's reputed Mary Dalton died ~1819, but I've not seen a record to confirm.

Thomas Benbow Dalton died, apparently on his 71st birthday, 6 May 1841, death certificate would confirm, in Bromley Street, Ratcliffe, Bow, London (1841 J Quarter in STEPNEY Volume 02 Page 317).

Henry James Goss and Ann Wenman (née Costin)

Henry James Goss (b. 25 Aug 1832, bap. 16 Sep 1832 All Saints, Poplar) Bachelor, Ship's Caulker, son of Richard John Goss, Ship's Caulker (Richard John Goss and Martha Ayres), married Ann Wenman, Widow, daughter of William Costin, Shipwright and Anne Merchant, on 7 May 1855 at Holy Trinity, Mile End Old Town (Holy Trinity Church, Morgan Street, Tredegar Square, Bow). Witnesses were Mark Jones and Sarah Davidson.

Ann Costin (b. ~1830) had previously married Peter Edward Wenman, widower, Shipwright, at St Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent on 12 Jun 1853. And Peter Edward Wenman had previously married Anne Johnson, in Minster in Sheppey, Kent on 23 May 1847, with whom he had one son:

1. Peter John Wenman b. 19 Mar 1849 (1849 M Quarter in THE SHEPPEY UNION Volume 05 Page 519), mother's maiden name JOHNSON

Ann Wenman (née Johnson) died aged 25 in 1852 M Quarter in THE SHEPPEY UNION Volume 02A Page 348.

Then Peter Edward Wenman died, aged 25, on 15 Jul 1853 (1853 S Quarter in THE SHEPPEY UNION Volume 02A Page 318) and was buried on 19 Jul 1853 in Minster in Sheppey, just a month after his second marriage.

But not before the conception of his posthumous child:

Henry James Goss and Ann Costin then added a daughter:

3. Anne Goss b. 1856 J Quarter in STEPNEY Volume 01C Page 555, mother's maiden name COSTIN. (Found no further records.)

Henry and Ann Goss were married for little more than a year, because he died, aged 24, in 1856 S Quarter in WEST HAM UNION Volume 04A Page 27.

In 1861, Ann Goss (31) Widow was living in the household of her father, William Costin (75) Widower, Shipwright, in Bromley[-by-Bow], Poplar and Peter [Edward] Wenman (8) Scholar, listed as William's grandson.

Ann's father, William Costin, died aged 78 in 1865 J Quarter in POPLAR UNION Volume 01C Page 426, which may have precipitated the next event, as Ann Goss (31ish) daughter of William Costin, Shipwright, married a third time to Thomas Lewis (30) Batchelor, Bootmaker, son of William Lewis, Tool Maker, at St Michael and All Angels, Bromley-by-Bow on 19 Nov 1865.

There appears to be no record of his birth nor a baptism, but in 1841 a Thomas Lewis (4) was living with William Lewis (50) with several siblings including Caroline (2), among an enormous list of inhabitants of Pitts Place, St Giles in the Fields. St Giles in the Fields became known as the place where the Great Plague of 1665 originated, causing great mortality and leading to plague pits filling the churchyard. This doesn't sound like a very appealing place to live. Mind you, in 1851, Thomas Lewis (14) Pauper, from St Giles, was an inmate of the Union Workhouse in St Giles in the Fields.

Thomas and Ann Lewis then had two daughters:

4. Caroline Annett Lewis b. 1867 M Quarter in POPLAR UNION Volume 01C Page 639, mother's maiden name wrongly, but usefully, GOSS.
5. Elizabeth Louisa Lewis b. 1870 J Quarter in STEPNEY Volume 01C Page 501, with her mother's maiden name listed as COSTIER (closeish).

In 1871, living in Samuel Street, St Anne Limehouse, Stepney, were Thomas Lewis (34) Labourer at Works from St Giles, Middlesex; Ann Lewis (37); Caroline Lewis (4) and Elizabeth Lewis (10mts).

Meanwhile, also in 1871, in Rose Street, Minster, Sheppey, were Thomas Costin (claiming to be 50) Green Grocer from Sheerness; with Mary Costin (40); Caroline Costin (14), Alfred Costin (12) and William Costin (5).

Thomas Gaving Costin b. 8 Nov 1813, bap. 6 Feb 1814 in Sheerness, records show, was also the son of William Costin and Ann Merchant (who had married in Minster in Sheppey on 16 Jun 1810). Thomas Costin and Ann Lewis late Goss formerly Wenman (née Costin), therefore, were brother and sister.

Thomas Costin son of William Costin, had married Mary Ann Taylor in Minster in Sheppey, Kent on 4 Jun 1852. Thomas and Mary Ann had six children:

1. Thomas Gaven Costin b. 1853 J Quarter in THE SHEPPEY UNION Volume 02A Page 513, bap. 27 Apr 1853 at Holy Trinity, Sheerness. Died at 18 and was buried in Sheppey Cemetery on 26 Mar 1871
2. Caroline Costin b. 1856 S Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 534
3. Alfred William Costin b. 1858 D Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 584. Died, aged 16, in 1875 M Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 580 and was buried in Sheppey Cemetery on 28 Feb 1875
4. William John Costin b. 1860 S Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 573. Died, aged 3, and was buried at Sheppey Cemetery on 20 Sep 1863
5. Mary Ann Costin b. 1863 D Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 665. Died, aged 4, in 1868  M Quarter in SHEPPEY  Volume 02A  Page 450 and was buried at Sheppey Cemetery on 9 Feb 1868
6. William Costin b. 1866 J Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 682

Thomas Costyn (sic) died at 59 in 1872 S Qtr in SHEPPEY Vol 02A Page 438.

There is a death of an Annie Lewis, aged 42, in 1873 M Quarter in WEST HAM UNION Volume 04A Page 49, which I'm certain relates.

Because then, Thomas Lewis married his late wife's brother's widow Mary Ann Costin in Medway, Kent in 1876. Convoluted enough? (Actually, this nearly tripped me up, because Ann Lewis late Goss formerly Wenman (née Costin) and Mary Ann Lewis formerly Costin (née Taylor) were the same age, with the same birthplace. And with no birth or baptism record for Ann, one could almost be forgiven for assuming that Mary Ann earlier called herself Ann and later used Mary and that they were one person. This highlights the need to check all of the members of a household for clues. Only researching Mary's children and working backwards unpicked this immense puzzle.)

In 1881, Thomas Lewis (46) Greengrocer from Middlesex, London was living in Alma Road, Minster in Sheppey with Mary Lewis (50); Elizabeth Lewis (11) from Poplar; William Coston (sic) (15) Green Grocer's Assistant listed as Son and William Newman (17) Servant. Caroline Lewis (14) was working as a General Servant for Peter May in Trinity Road, Minster in Sheppey.

The Sheerness Guardian and East Kent Advertiser of 22 Dec 1888 reported that: "Henry Brend, of Alma Street, Marine Town, was summoned for unlawfully assaulting and beating Thomas Lewis, on dec 12th. The defendant pleaded Not Guilty. The complainant deposed that he was a greengrocer, and resided at Alma Road, Marine Town. About 11:30 on Wednesday night, the 12th inst., he was asleep in bed, when his daughter came and awoke him. She stated that she heard a noise at the front door, and he came down to ascertain the cause. His wife was standing at the door and he saw Brend standing there; but before he had time to ask what he wanted, Brend gave him a heavy blow on the left cheek. Witness closed the door and returned to his room to finish dressing, after which he went in search of a policeman, because he thought that would be the best course to adopt. He met PC Skinner coming towards his house, and just before his arrival, defendant ran away. The constable pursued him, but could not overtake him. Defendant: I did not hit him; I only shook him. His Worship: Shaking him is an assault. Mr Lewis said he did not wish to deal harshly with the defendant on account of his youth; but he would leave the matter in His Worship's superior judgement in the hope it would act as a warning to him. By his Worship: My son is a cab driver, and my wife was sitting up for him. She is so unwell that she can't attend here today. Replying to his Worship, Sergt Highwood said the constable did not see the defendant. William Costin, the complainant's son-in-law [step-son], said that between 11:30 and 12 p.m. He was taking the cushions from his cab to the shop, when defendant came along Alma Road and struck him. He had just passed a policeman and thought it prudent to go for him after the assault was committed. Defendant struck Mr Lewis in his absense. By his Worship: The defendant was formerly in my employ, and I have not spoken to him since he left me. He brought an action against me in the County Court for wages, and it was heard at the November court. The Judge gave a verdict in my favour. Mr Lewis: I saw the corporal on the night of the assault and showed him a mark on my cheek. PC Spencer Clarke, in answer to his Worship, said he saw a slight mark on the cheek, apparently caused by a blow. He saw it shortly after midnight. His Worship said it was clear that the defendant committed the assault out of spite on account of the proceedings at the County Court. He would have to pay a fine of £1 and 10s costs, or to go to prison for 14 days' hard labour. The money was paid."

In 1891, Thomas Lewis (56) Bootmaker (his original trade) was living at 12, Alma Road, Minster in Sheppey with Mary Lewis (60); William Costin (24) Cab Driver from Sheerness, Kent, Wife's Son; Amy H Symond (sic) (14) Grandchild born in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Henrietta Amy Simmonds was the daughter of Charles James Simmonds and Caroline Costin); and William J Pointing (15) Servant General help to cab driver. Elizabeth Lewis (18 - she was 21) from Poplar, London, was General domestic servant to George Watson, Shipwright, next door at 14, Alma Road, Minster in Sheppey.

Mary Ann Lewis formerly Costin (née Taylor) died on 12 Jan 1897 (1897 M Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 557), and was buried at Sheppey Cemetery on 18 Jan 1897. The notice in the press read "LEWIS Jan 12, at 12 Alma Road, Sheerness, Mary Ann, wife of Thomas Lewis, aged 67 years."

Thomas Lewis was buried at Sheppey Cemetery on 24 Apr 1916.

William Dalton and Sarah Travally

William Dalton (b. 26 Dec 1742, bap. 16 Jan 1743 at St Paul's Church, Shadwell), son of Thomas and Mary Dalton, married Sarah Travally (b. 5 Aug 1739), daughter of Winnall Travally and Elizabeth Benbow. Entries in the Parish Register of St. Mary, Stratford, Bow in East London (Bow Church), obtained from the Greater London Record office (later London Metropolitan Archives and now The London Archives) and reported in The Journal of the Dalton Genealogical Society Volume 12 No. 2 page 8) [Source], state that Dalton, William, Batchelor and Sarah Travaly (sic), Spinster, both of this parish, were married in this church by banns on 15 May 1763. 

This couple had seven children: 

1. Elizabeth Dalton b. Friday, 13 July 1764, bap. 5 Aug 1764 (at 23 days old) at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney
2. Winnall Travally Dalton b. Monday, 28 July 1766, bap. 24 Aug 1766 (the record says he was 27 days old) at St Anne's, Limehouse
3. William Benbow Dalton b. Sunday, 22 Nov 1767, bap. 20 Dec 1767 (at 28 days old) at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney. He was buried on 14 Jan 1768, also at St Dunstan and All Saints
4. Thomas Benbow Dalton b. 6 May 1770
5. Sarah Dalton b. 22 May 1778
6. Martha Dalton b. 2 Oct 1780
7. Ebenezer Dalton b. 16 Aug 1782

The baptism records list their father's occupation as Caulker, a person who caulks the seams of boats; to make (a vessel) watertight by filling the seams between the planks with oakum or other material driven snug. In the Hebrew Bible, the prophet Ezekiel refers to the caulking of ships as a specialist skill.

The records for the last four children are unusual. Those in 'England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975' mention Saint Dunstan and All Saints Church, Stepney (as in parish), but they do not follow the usual format of Christian baptisms and specify the dates as birth dates, not of christenings. They each also include the information: "Maternal Grandfather's Name, Winnal Travaly and Maternal Grandmother's Name, Elizabeth", so we can have no doubt that these are the children of this couple and their pedigree. There were witnesses to all these birth records too, which in all four cases were Elizabeth Gabbedey and Esther Travally, both of whom were Sarah's sisters. Repeated in the record set, 'England and Wales Non-Conformist Record Indexes (RG4-8), 1588-1977', which specified each child's birthplace as "White Horse Street, St Dunstans Stepney, Middlesex." "White Horse Street was the main street of the medieval village of Stepney, centred around St Dunstan’s Church. Until the nineteenth century, although there were buildings along White Horse Street itself, the surrounding area was mainly open fields." [Source] These records are from Dr Williams' Library Registry; Registers of certificates, an early birth register of Protestant dissenters. 

William Dalton from Poplar died in his 57th year and was buried, on 9 Jul 1799, at St Anne's Limehouse. Probate was granted on 15 Jul 1799. The Will of William Dalton of Naval Row [1] Hamlet [of] Poplar Stepney, Middlesex tells us that he was leaving "to my loving wife Sarah Dalton all my household furniture, plate, silver, china and whatsoever else shall be in my house at my [unreadable] for her sole use and for her disposal as she may think fit, likewise all the interest arising from my property in the Funds at the Bank of England." He also mentions his children by name, viz: Elizabeth, Winnall Travally Dalton, Thomas Benbow Dalton, Sarah, Martha and Ebeneezer.

Called Naval Row, these houses were built by the owner of Blackwall Yard, John Perry, almost certainly as accommodation for some of his employees - in the early years of the 19th century the occupants were mostly 'officers in the shipyard'. Originally two storeys high with basements and attics: the houses are just discernible in Daniell's 1808 panorama of the East India Docks. If Perry used an architect it is likely to have been John Powsey, his surveyor. Four of the original seven houses - latterly Nos 16–22 (even) Naval Row — were not demolished until after 1945. [1] The Naval Row Conservation Area was designated in January 1987 by the London Docklands Development Corporation. It is defined to the north by the listed perimeter wall of the former East India Docks. Laid out in the early 19th century, Naval Row takes its name from a small terrace constructed c. 1782 by John Perry (1743-1810), owner of Blackwall Yard, where he built ships largely for the East India Company. To live at that address, one assumes that William Dalton must have worked for John Perry. Caulking was certainly a skill he will have needed in building and maintaining ships. It's clear Dalton was not just an ordinary labouring caulker and it looks to have been a close association - not just from William Dalton's address and financial position - but also as William and Sarah Dalton were witnesses at the marriage of John Perry's sister, Elizabeth, to Sarah's (and my) cousin, Elnathan Ayres.

NB: Many family trees at Ancestry wrongly claim that Sarah Dalton died in 1792 in Lambeth. Wrong area. More importantly, William Dalton wouldn't be leaving his property to "his loving wife", if she'd died several years before him.

The Will of Sarah Dalton of the Hamlet of Poplar in the Parish of St Dunstans, Stepney, Middlesex, Widow - so we absolutely know William died first - also confirms this. Her Will is dated 15 Mar 1813 and the Probate date is 19 Feb 1818, so we can be pretty sure she died between Mar 1813 and Feb 1818, although, in her case, I haven't [yet] been able to find a corresponding burial. Sarah requests "to be directly buried as near to the remains of my late husband as possible and my funeral to be in the same manner" [one hopes therefore that she's also buried at St Anne's Limehouse); directs her goods and chattels to be sold; the property of her late husband William Dalton as it stands in the Bank of England viz one thousand four hundred pounds in the five per cents ... and one hundred pounds in the three per cents .... [2]  to be equally divided between my five children [3], namely Winnall Travally Dalton, Thomas Benbow Dalton, Ebenezer Dalton and my daughters Sarah Dent and Martha Butterfield also give and bequeath my watch and rings to the said Martha Butterfield and five pieces of [unreadable] work to the said Sarah Dent also my wearing apparel and household linen to be equally divided between my said daughters Sarah Dent and Martha Butterfield. Lastly also nominate and appoint my said sons Winnall Travally Dalton, Thomas Benbow Dalton and my son-in-law William Butterfield to be joint Executors.

[2] These funds in the five percents and three percents, may be reasonably assumed to have been Consols (originally short for consolidated annuities, but subsequently taken to mean consolidated stock) were government debt issues in the form of perpetual bonds, redeemable at the option of the government. The first British consols were issued by the Bank of England in 1751. 

[3] Sarah names five children, which suggests Elizabeth pre-deceased her.
