Alfred James Lynch and Sarah Green

Alfred James Lynch (b. 26 Feb 1852, bap. 21 Mar 1852 at St George in the East), youngest son of John Lynch and Ann Wiltshire, married Sarah Green, (b. 15 May 1854, bap. 11 Jun 1854 at Christ Church, Watney Street, Shadwell), daughter of Edward Green and Eliza Goodman, at the church of St Thomas that had stood in Arbour Square, Stepney, on 5 Jun 1871.

Alfred and Sarah Lynch had five children:

4. Sarah Eliza Lynch b. 1879 S Qtr in MILE END Vol 01C Page 569
5. Ada Lynch b. 1881 J Qtr in MILE END Vol 01C Page 547

On the baptism records for their first two sons, Alfred Arthur and Albert William, Alfred James Lynch's occupation is listed as a Packer.

In 1881, at the Duke of Norfolk, 14 Norfolk Street, Mile End Old Town, we find A J Lynch (29) Licenced Victualler; S Lynch (27) Wife; sons A A Lynch (8), A W Lynch (7), G E Lynch (5), daughter S Lynch (2), E Turner (18) Female General Servant and the widowed mother-in-law, Eliza Green (59).

In 1891, Alfred Lynch (39), Beer & Wine Retailer, Sarah (36) and son Albert (16), a Commercial Clerk, were living in Camberwell, Southwark, London.

By 1901, they were back at 291, Oxford Street, Mile End Old Town (which, I believe, later became Stepney Way), with Alfred Lynch (49) Laundry Man, Sarah (47), Albert (22), Railway Porter, Ada Lynch (19), Ironer, Emily Lynch (5), Granddaughter, and a Eliza Ellis (20), General Domestic Servant.

Alfred James Lynch died, aged 55, in 1907 J Quarter in MILE END OLD TOWN Volume 01C Page 252.

In 1911, still at 291, Oxford Street, Mile End Old Town, Sarah Lynch (56), Widow, Laundress, was living with her married daughter, Sarah Pope (32) and grandchildren, Joseph Pope (8), Rosa (2) and May (0).

In 1921, Sarah Lynch (67) Widowed, was living at 12, Oley Place, Stepney, Mile End Old Town, London. Again at the same address was Sarah E Pope (42) Attendant Ladies Underground Convenience, for Stepney Borough Council; Joseph A Pope (18), Rosa V Pope (12) and May A Pope (11).

There are several death records that may relate to Sarah Lynch.

This open space, to the south of Whitechapel Road, was originally the site of the 'White Chapel', St Mary Matfelon (Church of St Mary, Whitechapel, London, 1831)

John Lynch (b. 15 Mar 1806, bap. 30 Mar 1806 at St George in the East), son of James and Jane Linch (sic), married Ann Wiltshire - the marriage record spells her name Wilcher - (b. 3 Oct 1806, bap. 27 Oct 1813 at St Mary Whitechapel), daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Wiltshire (there's a marriage of Richard Wiltshire and Elizabeth Todd, in Shoreditch on 13 Oct 1806 that may relate), at St Mary Matfelon (St Mary Whitechapel) on 13 Apr 1828.

Records suggest that John and Ann Lynch had nine children:

5. James Linch (sic) b. 8 Mar 1838 (1838 J Quarter in SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST) IN THE COUNTY OF MIDDLE Volume 02 Page 127 - mother's maiden name WILCHERE), bap 15 Apr 1838 at St George in the East. Died, aged 1, in 1839 S Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 02 Page 84.
6. Ann Elizabeth Lynch b. 22 Jun 1840 (1840 J Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 02 Page 114 - mother's maiden name WILTCHER), bap. 19 Jul 1840 at St George in the East
7. Richard Lynch b. 27 Apr 1842 (1842 J Quarter in SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST) Volume 02 Page 108 - mother's maiden name WILCHER), bap. 22 May 1842 at St George in the East
8. Robert Gordon Lynch b. 2 May 1845 (1845 J Quarter in SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST) Volume 02 Page 116 - mother's maiden name WILTSHIRE), bap. 1 Jun 1845 at St George in the East (as Robert Lynch) and bap. again on 17 Aug 1845 (as Robert Gordon Lynch) at Christ Church, Watney Street, Shadwell. The transcriptions in the London, Docklands And East End Baptisms says Christ Church, Jamaica Street, but that church didn't open until 1877. Suspect the second baptism was because his middle name was missed on the first one.
9. Alfred James Lynch b. 26 Feb 1852 (1852 M Quarter in SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST) Volume 01C Page 456 - mother's maiden name listed as WILLSHER), bap. 21 Mar 1852 at St George in the East.

The various spellings of the mother's maiden name on the GRO birth registrations are undoubtedly as a result of clerks writing down what they heard, which the parents couldn't spell out to them, but it's clear they're all meant to be Wiltshire. All of the baptisms list John's occupation as a Butcher. On Charlotte's baptism, the family address was Upper Chapman Street (see on map); on Elizabeth Harriet's and John Edward's baptisms their address was Lower Cornwall Street (now Cornwall Street formerly Upper (western part) and Lower (eastern part) Cornwall Street, it's just north of and parallel to Cable Street.) On Francis' baptism the address is just Cornwell Street, but that's probably the same place as before. On James, Ann Elizabeth and Richard's baptisms, the address is transcribed as Lower Cornwell Street. On Robert Gordon and Alfred James' baptisms, it was specified as 7 Lower Cornwell Street. I'm sure this is all still Lower Cornwall Street.

Haven't been able to locate any record of the family on the 1841 census.

In 1851 and still living at 7 Lower Cornwall Street, Saint George in the East, were John Lynch (45) Butcher Journeyman; Ann Lynch (44), Charlotte Hanson (21) (Charlotte Lynch had married Adolph Hanson in 1850), John Ed[ward] Lynch (17) Messenger; Francis Lynch (15) Coach painter apprentice; Ann Elizabeth Lynch (10), Richard Lynch (8) and Robert G Lynch (6). (Cannot confirm any further records for Elizabeth Harriet and need further clues.)

In 1861, at 143 High Street, Shadwell we find John Lynch (55) Butcher; Ann Lynch (55) Laundress with her birth place listed as Aldgate (which makes sense as it's yards from where she was baptised in Whitechapel); Ann Lynch (20); Richard Lynch (18) Warehouseman; Robert G Lynch (15) Errand Boy; Alfred J Lynch (9); Catherine Lewis (30) Servant Housemaid; and two boarders: William Honeyford (20) from Middlesex and George Thompson (19) from Sunderland, Durham, both list their occupation as Blacksmith.

In 1871, Ann Lynch (64) was living at 15 Sidney Street, Mile End Old Town, she was listed as the head of the household and married. Living with her were Robert G Lynch (25) Smith; Alfred J Lynch (19) Factory Hand; Sarah J Hanson (15) Granddaughter, Domestic Servant; and Ann Twyman (30) Lodger. Meanwhile, John Lynch (65) Oil refiner, Married, birthplace Wapping (St George in the East, was historically known as Wapping-Stepney) was less than half a mile away as a Patient in The London Hospital, Whitechapel Road. (The current Tower Hamlets Town Hall, opened in 2023, incorporates the façade of the old London Hospital which is a Grade II listed building.)

John Lynch (66) Oil refiner, died on 17 Dec 1872 (1872 D Quarter in MILE END OLD TOWN Volume 01C Page 332) at 15 Sidney Street, of 'Dropsy' 10 days, certified. The informant was R G [Robert Gordon] Lynch, present at death, of 15 Sidney Street. (Dropsy is an archaic term for edema, a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fluid in the body's tissues, causing swelling. Dropsy is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying condition, including heart, liver, or kidney failure.) The change of occupation from butcher to oil refiner was at first confusing, but the address in Sidney Street where he died, as well as the name of the informant on his death certificate confirm that these are the correct records.

Ann Lynch (née Wiltshire) died, aged 72, in 1880 M Quarter in ST GEORGE IN THE EAST Volume 01C Page 340.

Thomas Samuel Eastabrook and Esther Kathleen Drake

Thomas Samuel Eastabrook (b. 19 Feb 1880 in Devonport), eldest son of Samuel Ebenezer Derry Eastabrook and Eliza Back, married Esther Kathleen Drake (b. 1887 in Cardiff), daughter of Edward Charles Drake and Emma Jane Gloyne, in the 2nd quarter of 1906 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. (Thomas Samuel Eastabrook's mother, Eliza Back, was the daughter of Thomas Back and Mary Drake, who married in East Stonehouse, Devon in 1852, so undoubtedly we've just gone around in yet another circle.)

Thomas and Esther had four children:

3. Minnie Esther Eastabrook said to be born b. 26 May 1909, reg. 1910 S Quarter in PORTSMOUTH Volume 02B Page 371
4. Richard Ernest Eastabrook b. 25 Oct 1911 D Quarter in PORTSMOUTH Volume 02B Page 748. Died 24 Nov 1941, see below.

In 1911, Esther Eastabrook (23) Married, was living at 124 Toronto Road, Portsmouth with daughter, Ellen Eastabrook (4) born in Roath Cardiff, Glamorganshire; Ronald Eastabrook (3) born in Brixton, London and Minnie Eastabrook (0) born in Buckland, Portsmouth. Thomas had previously been attached to HMS Victory II, a land based training establishment for stokers and engine artificers, based in Portsmouth, until January that year, however, at the time of the census in 1911, Thomas Samuel Eastabrook (31) was with HMS Speedwell (1889) in Sidmouth, Devon.

Having joined the Royal Navy on 23 Oct 1899, Thomas Samuel Eastabrook was lent to the Australian Government in 1912 and served with the Royal Australian Navy. Stoker Thomas Samuel Eastabrook of HMAS Brisbane (1915), was accidentally killed, aged 37, on 24 Feb 1917, it says from multiple injuries as the result of a fall. Thomas is buried in Plot C Grave 341 Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta (Kalkara Naval Cemetery) (Image courtesy of MilitaryImages.net). He is also commemorated on the Australian War Memorial, Campbell, Canberra.

Esther K Eastabrook then married William Lynch, in the 4th quarter of 1917, in Plymouth, Devon. 

Esther had one son with her 2nd husband:

5. Hugh Lynch, b. 1917 D Quarter in EAST STONEHOUSE Volume 05B Page 337 (Mother's maiden name, wrongly, listed as EASTABROOK.)

In 1921, Ellen K Eastabrook (15) was living with her grandfather, Samuel E D Eastabrook and aunt, Amelia E Eastabrook at 36 Llanishen Street, Cardiff; Ronald Eastabrook (13) and Richard Eastabrook (9) were both pupils at St Vincents Home For Boys, Teignmouth Road, Torquay, Devon. Listed as an orphanage for Catholic boys, although the record is clear that their father was dead (inferring mother was alive). I've not found William Lynch, Esther Kathleen, nor Minnie Esther Easterbrook, nor Hugh Lynch.

William Lynch was said to have died around 1926.

Esther Kathleen Drake Eastabrook Lynch, however, married for the third time to Alfred William Gullick in 1928, in Saltcoats, Ayrshire. She's listed as Esther Kathleen Drake Easterbrook under Scotland Roman Catholic Parish Marriages - from which this marriage likely took place at St Mary's (Our Lady Star of the Sea), Saltcoats. At Scotland's People (Ref: 576 / 1 / 32), this marriage is listed as being between Alfred William Gullick and Esther Kathleen Lynch.

Alfred William Gullick (b. 4 Jun 1882 in Stonehouse, Devon, reg. 1883 D Quarter in EAST STONEHOUSE Volume 05B Page 288, bap. 1883 as Alfridus Gulielmus Gullick at the Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of Saint Mary and Saint Boniface, Plymouth), was the son of William Gullick, Private Royal Marines from Thrushelton, Devon and Hannah or Anna Maria Murphy from Ireland. Alfred William Gullick joined the Royal Navy in July 1899 as a Boy 2nd Class. He served until 1920 and, as was Esther's first husband, was lent to the Royal Australian Navy, in 1913, serving with HMAS Sydney (1912); HMAS Australia (1911); HMAS Melbourne (1912) and at HMAS Cerberus, before returning to HMA London Depot.

Esther's son by her first husband, Richard Ernest Eastabrook, Dick, was lost with the sinking of HMS Dunedin (HMS Dunedin Society), on Thu 24th Nov 1941. Plumber 3rd Class, Richard Ernest Eastabrook is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Panel 56, Column 3. 

Alfred William Gullick died, at 74, in 1957, in Saltcoats. Esther Kathleen Gullick died, aged 88, in 1975, also in Saltcoats. Ref: 662 /1 95. If there was any doubt, her mother's maiden name is listed as Gloyne.
