Believed to be one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in England, and is dedicated to the Roman martyr Saint Pancras, although the building itself is largely Victorian.

Thomas Mason, youngest son of Samuel Mason and Amelia Baker, married Charlotte Dixon (bap. 29 Dec 1833 in Broxted), daughter of John and Elizabeth Dixon, on 21 Feb 1857 at the parish church of St Mary, Broxted, creating the family's very own Mason–Dixon line (sorry, couldn't resist).

Thomas and Charlotte Mason had at least nine children:
  1. Ellen Mason b. 1857 J Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 346, bap. 14 Jun 1857 at St Mary, Broxted
  2. Thomas Mason b. 1859 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 329, bap. 11 Dec 1859 at St Mary, Broxted

In 1861, Thomas Mason (27) Dock labourer was living at 6, Thornhill Street, St Marys Islington, Islington, London with Charlotte Mason (26) and their two children to date: Ellen Mason (3) and Thomas Mason (1).

In 1871, living at Speedy Place, St Pancras, London, were Thomas Mason (37) Deputy turncock (as had been his sister's husband, Abraham Shelford), Charlotte Mason (36), Ellen Mason (13) Cartridge Maker; Thomas Mason (11), Isabella Mason (9), Evelyn Mason (5), Samuel Mason (2).

Thomas Mason must have died roughly between 1875 and 1881, but it hasn't been possible to narrow it down within that time frame.

In 1881, Charlotte Mason (47) Widow, Charwoman (unemployed) was living at 27, Green Street, St Andrew Holborn Above the Bars and St George the Martyr, Holborn with son Thomas Mason (21) Labourer; Isabella Mason (19) Florist artificial; Evelyn Mason (15) Domestic servant; Samuel Mason (12), Frederick William Mason (9) and Charlotte Elizabeth Mason (7).

In 1891, Charlotte Mason (57) Charwoman was living in Hastings Street, St Pancras, London, with her three sons: Thomas Mason (31) General labourer; Samuel Mason (22) Ostler and Frederick Mason (19) General labourer.

In 1901, Charlotte Mason, (60ish) was listed as Widow, Charwoman, Mother-in-law, living with William J Uttridge - married to Ellen Mason - at 5, Brantholme Place, St Pancras, along with Samuel Mason (32).

There are no more records that can confidently be attributed to Charlotte and it hasn't yet been possible to identify the relevant record of her death.

In 1911, Samuel Mason (42) was no longer living with the family and was a Porter and Salesman at Gray's InnGray's Inn Road, St Pancras, London.

Samuel Mason and Amelia Baker

St Mary, Broxted

Samuel Mason and Amelia Baker had been witnesses to the marriage of Daniel Hockley and Sophia Mason at the church of St Mary, Broxted, in 1815 and were themselves married in this same church the following year, on 3 Jan 1816. Witnesses at this wedding were Rebecca Baker and Thomas Baker.

Of similar ages, one imagines that Samuel Mason and Sophia Mason could have been brother and sister, although I've not been able to confirm this.

What records exist suggest Samuel and Amelia Mason had six children:
  1. Charles Mason b. around 1817
  2. George Mason b. 1818-20 (calculated from age at death)
  3. Richard Mason bap. 2 May 1824 at St Mary, Broxted
  4. Sophia Mason bap. 30 Jul 1826 at St Mary, Broxted
  5. John Mason bap. 27 Oct 1829 at St Mary, Broxted
  6. Thomas Mason bap. 23 May 1833 at St Mary, Broxted
The baptism record for Richard, shows Samuel's occupation as Labourer.

In 1841, Samuel Mason (45) Agricultural Labourer was living at Browns End, Broxted, Dunmow, Essex with Amelia Mason (45), Charles Mason (20), George Mason (20), Richard Mason (17), Sophia Mason (15), John Mason (11) and Thomas Mason (8). The adults' ages being rounded down to the nearest five on this census, I'm assuming that they were listed in descending order of age and that Charles was older than George.

Samuel Mason died, aged 62, in 1853 J Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 238 and was buried, on 21 May 1853, at St Mary, Broxted.

So far, I've not been able to find a record of Amelia's death.

Daniel Hockley and Sophia Mason

St Mary, Broxted - Chancel
cc-by-sa/2.0 - © John Salmon - geograph.org.uk/p/3374402

Daniel Hockley, Labourer, married Sophia Mason on 17 Jul 1815 at the parish church in Broxted, Essex. Witnesses were Samuel Mason and Amelia Baker

For now Daniel is the earliest of my Hockley ancestors that I can follow a trail of records to in order to be confident are correct. He was reputedly the son of Daniel Hockley and Sarah Turner - and thus brother of Sally Hockley - but I've found no record of his birth (or baptism) to prove this. There is, however, a listing of a Daniel Hockley, baptised in Broxted on 21 Feb 1790, son of John and Mary Hockley, which looks to be a far more likely candidate.

Daniel and Sophia had nine children:
  1. George Hockley bap. 1 Oct 1815 in Broxted
  2. Lucy Hockley bap. 26 Oct 1817 (No further records found)
  3. Eliza Hockley bap. 23 Jul 1820 (died, aged 25, and was buried on 7 Jul 1845 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow.)
  4. Mary Hockley bap. 9 May 1824
  5. Tamar Hockley bap. 8 Oct 1826. Tamar as a name: There are three characters in the Bible with this name.
  6. Sarah Hockley bap. 10 Aug 1828 (buried 14 Sep 1828)
  7. Sophia Hockley bap. 14 Aug 1831
  8. William Hockley bap. 15 Sep 1833
  9. James Hockley bap. 5 Aug 1838
From Lucy onwards, they were baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow.

Youngest child, James, falls within Civil Registration and, the General Register Office record confirms the mother's maiden name as MASON.

In 1841, at Halfway House, Great Dunmow, were Daniel Hockley (50), Sophia (45), George (25), Eliza (20), Tamar (15), Sophia (10), William (8), James (2) and Lucy (0), daughter of Eliza Hockley, Single Woman [1]. Mary Hockley (18ish) was working as a Female Servant in the household of William Piper (30) Chemist & Druggist in High Street, Great Dunmow, Dunmow.

Sophia Hockley died, aged 46 - which suggests a year of birth of 1796 - and was buried, on 23 Oct 1842, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow.

In 1861, the widowed Daniel Hockley - age wrongly estimated to 62 - was living in the household of son William Hockley (27), married to Charlotte (née Cock) (27), their daughter Sarah C (1) and William's brother, James (23).

Daniel Hockley died in 1868, his age was estimated to 81. Daniel Hockley was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow on 8 Jul 1868.

[1] Lucy Hockley (b. 1841 M Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 77), bap. 5 Mar 1841 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, daughter of Eliza Hockley, Single Woman. In 1861, Lucy Hockley (20) Domestic Servant was an Inmate of Great Dunmow Union Workhouse. In 1871, Lucy Hockley (30) Domestic Servant was an Inmate of Dunmow Union Workhouse, but, in 1881 Lucy Hockley (36ish) was employed as a Domestic Servant by Charles Cook (70) in Chelmsford Road, Barnston, Dunmow. Lucy Hockley of Dunmow Union Workhouse died, aged 49, and was buried on 22 Nov 1890.

George Mason and Enough Hollingsworth (née Barker)

The Maltings Broxted is actually the name of the road.

George Mason, son of Samuel Mason and Amelia Baker, married Enough Hollingsworth, around 12-14 years his senior, at St Mary's Church, Broxted on 10 Jul 1847. At first I thought this given name must be a transcription error, but sure enough (pun intended), other records agree. She was born Enough Barker, bap. 9 Dec 1804, daughter of James and Elizabeth Barker, who we can only guess had a lot of children and didn't want more.

Enough Barker had previously married Thomas Hollingsworth, in Broxted, on 30 Sep 1822, with whom she was living at Broxted Malting in 1841, with seven children between the ages of 0 and 15. Thomas Hollingsworth died, aged 43, and was buried on 9 Mar 1845 at St Mary the Virgin, Broxted.

George Mason died in 1855 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 214, age at death listed as 37 and he was also buried, at St Mary the Virgin, Broxted, on 9 Dec 1855, when his age was given as 35.

Enough Mason died the following year, 1856 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Vol 04A Page 207, aged 51, and was buried on 18 Nov 1856 in Broxted.
