Henry Doe and Elizabeth Doe

All Saints Church, Little Canfield, Essex

Henry Doe (bap. 20 Sep 1778), son of Henry Doe and Elizabeth Stones, married Elizabeth Doe at All Saints Church, Little Canfield on 11 Dec 1799. Either there were a lot of parish foundlings given the surname Doe, or we have to consider the possibility that these two may have been cousins.

This Henry and Elizabeth Doe had eleven children, baptised at Little Canfield:

The last child was a posthumous birth, Henry Doe (40ish) having been buried at All Saints, Little Canfield on 28 Sep 1820. 

In 1841, Elizabeth Doe (61) was living in Little Canfield with her daughter, Sarah Gunn (41), George Doe (23), Moses Doe (20) and William Gunn (13). 

In 1861, Elizabeth Doe (80) - place of birth Great Easton, Essex - was living with her son, George Doe (43) at 11, The Village, Little Canfield.

Elizabeth Doe, died aged 83, and was buried at Little Canfield on 3 Jun 1862.

William Campling and Thomasine Maria Eldred

William Campling (b. ~1854), listed as son of John Campling, Porter, married Thomasine Maria Eldred, daughter of John Eldred and Elizabeth Pitts, at St Thomas's Church, West Ham - the now lost church in Rokeby Street on 8 Dec 1878. (The transcript of the record lists her as Thomas Ziner M Eldred, but I'm figuring this was not the family's first same-sex marriage!) There is more than one William Campling born in Bethnal Green around that time and so I haven't been able to isolate his birth or identify his parents.

Thomazine Maria Eldred was the half-sister of Alfred Eldred, step-daughter of Catherine Byatt and thus, also step-sister of Elizabeth Wilton.

William and Thomasine Maria Campling had six children:

All the birth registrations have the mother's maiden name as ELDRIDGE, but this has been used before by her half-brother, on the registration of his first daughter and it's the surname their step-mother was listed under in 1881.

In 1881, William Campling (26) Pianoforte porter from Bethnal Green, was living at 4, Wennington Road, Bethnal Green. Thomasine Marie was unaccountably listed as Anne (24), with Florence Campling (1).

In 1891, William Camplin (sic) (36) Piano forte maker (??) was living in Carmarthen Street, Islington with Marie Camplin (32), Florence Camplin (11), John Camplin (6), Frederick Camplin (4) and Sydney Camplin (1).

In 1901, the census lists Thomas (sic) Campling (44) Labourer Starch Works born in Bromley, London in Queen's Road, Plaistow, West Ham with Mary (sic) Campling (43) born in Old Ford, London; Florence Campling (21) Box Maker born in Roman Road, London and Frederick Campling (14) Grocer's Boy born in Islington. Even with so many errors, I'm certain this is the correct family. John Campling (16) Cart Porter born in Old Ford, London, was a Boarder in Forest Gate. While Sidney Campling (11) was an Inmate in a school in Horton Kirby - Home for Little Boys, Farningham, Kent.

Thomasine Maria Campling died at 50, in 1908 D Quarter in WEST HAM Volume 04A Page 91. Well, once more the record has mangled her name to Frances Ziner Maria Campling, but there can be no doubt this is her.

In 1911, Florence Campling (31) Card Board Box Maker, was living in South East Ham, West Ham with her youngest brother, Sidney Campling (21) Apprentice Linotype Operator and Thomas Steggles (54) Boarder. Both John William Campling and Frederick Henry Campling had emigrated to the United States. I haven't located William Campling in 1911, nor his death.

1. Florence Catherine Campling (34) emigrated to the United States, sailing from Liverpool on the RMS Franconia (1910) on 28 April 1914, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts. Florence Campling died on 1 Nov 1918 from Sarcoma of the Liver (Cancer). She was 38. She never married. She was buried, on 3 Nov 1918 in Sutton, Caledonia, Vermont, the permit for her burial having been issued to her brother John.
2. John William Campling married Edith Florence Sobey Milford (b. 1881 in Crediton, Devon), daughter of William Milford and Edith Mary Sobey, but I cannot find where or when their marriage took place. John and Edith had 3 daughters: Florence Maria b. 1910, Edith Frances b. 1912 and Marion Hazel b. 1914. Edith Milford Campling died on 31 Oct 1914 from Valvular Disease of the Heart. She was buried on 2 Nov 1914, in Sutton, Vermont. The 1950 Census shows that John was a Farmer. John W Campling died, on 15 Jun 1970, in West Burke, Vermont.
3. Frederick Henry Campling entered the US via Canada. He married Joan Fraser (b. 1872 in England) on 12 Jan 1914 in Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, Michigan. Joan Campling died in 1924 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit. Frederick remarried in Delaware, Indiana, on 19 Apr 1925, to Lenora Shuck (b. 21 Feb 1898 in Jennings County, Indiana, USA.) Lenora Campling died on 10 Dec 1926 and is also buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit. Frederick then remarried for a 3rd time to Chesba Lucille Wheatley, on 27 Jul 1927, in Gibson, Indiana, with whom he had at least four daughters. Frederick Henry Campling died, at 70, on 16 Feb 1957 and is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana, USA. Chesba Campling died on 16 Feb 1981 and is also buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Vincennes.
4. Sidney Edwin Campling married Beatrice Fell in the 1st quarter of 1915, in West Ham. In 1916, Sidney Edwin Camplin (sic) (26) enlisted for Military Service in the London Yeomanry. The couple don't appear to have any children. Sidney Edwin Campling died on 22 Jul 1941, in Ilford, Essex. Beatrice Campling remarried, in 1950, to Arthur Leonard Hemming. Beatrice Hemming died, in Romford, in 1960.

Robert Hockley, Tailor and Draper

Robert Hockley (bap. 1 Oct 1775 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow), son of Robert Hockley and Elizabeth Cramphorne, married Elizabeth Neve of Stisted, at All Saints Church, Stisted, Essex on 30 Nov 1797.

In 1799, the records of Country Apprentices, inform us that William Lammas was indentured to Robert Hockley, Tailor. This William Lammas would have been his cousin, son of William Lammas and Mary Hockley, Robert's aunt.

However, Elizabeth Hockley, wife of Robert Hockley, Tailor, died at just 27 and was buried on 23 Feb 1800. She had given birth to a daughter, who was christened, Elizabeth Hockley at 3 weeks of age on 25 Feb 1800. The infant died at 2 months and was buried, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, on 16 Mar 1800, with a sad note on the burial record saying "The mother dead."

Unsurprisingly, on 20 Nov 1801, Robert Hockley of this Parish, Widower, remarried this time to Mary Hayward of the Parish of Halstead in the County of Essex, Spinster, at the church of St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow. They were married by License in the Presence of Thos. Lilly and Elizabeth Hockley.

Robert and Mary's son, Ebenezer Hockley b. 6 Jun 1804, bap. 3 Aug 1804, was listed among Dunmow (Independent): Births & Baptisms.

But Mary Hockley wife of Robert Hockley died, aged 30, on 19 Aug 1805 and Essex Non-Conformist Church Records list that she was buried on 23 Aug 1805. There was also a Non-Conformist burial of a Mary Hockley on 30 Aug 1805, so, although there is no corresponding baptism, nor is the age of this deceased listed, my fear is this may be the death of another infant.

So, on 12 Jul 1808, Robert Hockley, Widower of this Parish, married for a third time to Mary Harvey, Widow, of the Parish of Great Sampford, again at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, the record stating, "Married in this Church by License. In the presence of Thomas Reynold and Sarah Cornell." It hasn't been possible to work out what this Mary's maiden name was.

This Robert and Mary Hockley had at least these two daughters:

1. Eleanor Hockley b. 1811, died aged 33 on 21 Dec 1844 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 56 and Essex Non-Conformist Church Records show she was buried on Christmas Day, 25 Dec 1844.
2. Lueza Hockley bap. 4 Mar 1814, listed in Dunmow (Independent): Births & Baptisms. Died on 7 Nov 1814 and was buried on 11 Nov 1814. 

Pigot's Directory of Essex 1823 lists Robert Hockley as a Tailor and Draper.

In 1841, Robert Hockley (65) Tailor and Draper was in High Street, Great Dunmow with Mary Hockley (64), Eleanor Hockley (30) and Mary Fewell (17) Female Servant. Their position in the High Street was interesting: 

The first household listed in the High Street, Great Dunmow in 1841 was that of Samuel Thorn (40) Shoe Maker. Next door was Robert Hockley, Tailor and Draper. Then George Saich (25) Ostler. It doesn't tell us which establishment, but as an Ostler, it must have been a Coaching Inn, so my feeling is most likely the Saracen's Head Hotel, the 15th century Coaching Inn at 30 High Street, Great Dunmow. (Saich later went to the Neville Arms, Wendens Ambo). The other side of the hostelry were Henry Wilton and Mary Barton, then Henry Wilton, Saddler - in whose household was Henry Wilton Pryor - and then John Prior (55) Basket Maker - father of Charles Prior married to Mary Wilton - who were next and Richard Wilton was lodging next door.)

Mary Hockley died at 66 in 1843 D Qtr in DUNMOW Vol 12 Page 59.

In 1851, Robert Hockley (76) Widower, Tailor from Great Dunmow, Essex, was living in Fryerning, Essex with James French (14) Ag Lab, Lodger in his household. (Robert's son, Ebenezer Hockley (44) Draper and Tailor, was at that time also living in Ingatestone Street, Fryerning with his family.)

The Essex Standard on 12 Nov 1858 reported that on the "4th instant Josiah Martin St. John, of Brighton, was charged with stealing a time-piece from Mr. Robert Hockley, tailor, of Ingatestone." So he was in Ingatestone by then.

Robert Hockley died in 1861 D Quarter in CHELMSFORD Volume 04A Page 86. The Essex Standard of 13 Nov and 15 Nov 1861, reported, "Nov 6th, at Ingatestone, aged 85, Mr. Robert Hockley, formerly of Dunmow."

Robert Fuller and Elizabeth Bass

Robert Fuller married Elizabeth Bass on 28 Nov 1807 at St Mary's Church, Woodford. It should be noted however that, as the current church was built in 1816, their marriage will have taken place in the previous medieval church that had stood in this location. They may have seen this building going up. 

Seven children of this couple were baptised in Woodford, Essex:

1. Elizabeth Fuller bap. 30 Apr 1809
2. Robert Fuller bap. 23 Jun 1811
3. Mary Fuller born 25 Feb 1814, bap. 20 Mar 1814
4. Sarah Fuller bap. 1 Sep 1816
5. John Fuller bap. 17 Oct 1819
6. Eliza Ann bap. 21 Jul 1822
7. Ann Fuller bap. 31 Oct 1824

In 1841, Robert Fuller (50) Ag Lab, Elizabeth Fuller (50) and their two youngest daughters, Eliza (15) and Ann (15) - as with all 1841 entries, ages very rounded - were listed as living at Winn Bridge, Woodford, West Ham.

Winn Bridge. This is where a stream – the Wynn Brook – joins the Roding. The bridge was passed to the Middlesex and Essex turnpike trust, and then the county in 1872.

Robert Fuller died, aged 60, and was buried in Woodford on 22 Feb 1846.

Elizabeth Fuller died, aged 65, and was buried on 12 Jan 1851. 

These are the earliest ancestors [so far] in this branch. Both Robert and Elizabeth were born around 1786, but I've not been able to identify baptisms for either of them. There are also potentially two further children, but I'm not convinced enough that they belong to this family to include them. Being younger (only 10 and 12), they would have been on that census too - unless they had died as infants and I've not found deaths or burials to confirm that - and, in any case, the naming pattern does not seem right for the family.

Harry Hockley and Fanny Ann Rootkin

Harry Hockley (b. 27 Jun 1871), Horse Keeper, son of William Hockley and Charlotte Cock, married Fanny Ann Rootkin (bap. 10 Dec 1871 in Great Dunmow, Essex), daughter of William Rootkin and Louisa Sharp, at St John the Baptist, Hoxton on 27 Nov 1892. Both gave their address as 61 Napier Street. Witnesses were Henry Balden and Mary Emma Hockley, the groom's sister. The previous year, Fanny Rootkin (19) had been a General Domestic Servant in the household of a Henry Smith (45) in Friern Barnet.

Harry and Fanny Ann Hockley had 14 children in total:

The mother's maiden name on all of these registrations is Rootkin.

In 1901, Harry Hockley (28) Gas Stoker from Dunmow, Essex, lived in Alfred Road, Buckhurst Hill, with wife Fanny Ann Hockley (28), William Hockley (8) [Frederick William] born in Hoxton; Harry C Hockley (7), Annie L Hockley (4), Alfred J Hockley (3), George Hockley (1) and Ernest J Hockley (0). 

In 1911, Harry Hockley (39) Gas Stoker, was still in Buckhurst Hill with Fanny Ann Hockley (39), Harry Charles Hockley (17) Errand Boy for an Ironmonger; Annie Louisa Hockley (14) Domestic Servant; Alfred James Hockley (13) School and Milk Boy; George Hockley (11), Arthur Thomas Hockley (8), Alice Beatrice Emma Hockley (5), Florence Hilda Hockley (4), Edward Hockley (2) and Dorothy May Hockley (5 Months). This record confirms that, by then, they had 13 children, with 10 alive and 3 had died. Frederick Hockley (18) birthplace Hoxton, was a Boarder Servant in the household of James Archer, Dairyman at Kettles Cottages, Dagenham.

Private Alfred James Hockley G/11890 (19) of the 8th Battalion Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), birthplace Buckhurst Hill, Essex, Died of wounds on 9 Oct 1916 in France & Flanders.

In 1921, Harry Hockley (50) Gas Stoker for the Gas Light & Coke Co, was still living at 70, Alfred Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex with Fanny Ann Hockley (49), Arthur Thomas Hockley (18) Brickmaker's Labourer; Alice Beatrice Emma Hockley (16) General Domestic Servant; Edward Hockley (12), Dorothy May Hockley (10) and Lily Charlotte Hockley (6).

Fanny Ann Hockley died at 62 in 1933 M Qtr in EPPING Vol 04A 550.

In 1939, Harry Hockley, Widowed, Gas Stoker, was living at 53 Loughton Way, Buckhurst Hill with William J Clarke, Master Carpenter; Alice B E Clarke (William J Clarke and Alice B E Hockley had married in 1932); Hilda F (Florence) Hockley, Kite Maker (Toy); Edward E P Ruhle, Secretary & Director Building Manufacture (Edward E P Ruhle and Florence H Hockley married later in 1939); and Phillip J Clarke (b. 31 Dec 1934).

Harry Hockley died at 75 in 1947 M Qtr in EPPING Vol 05A 138 and was buried on 17 Mar 1947, at St John the Baptist Church, Buckhurst Hill.

John Byatt and Jane Stokes

John Byatt (bap. 3 May 1778 in Elsenham), son of John Byatt and Sarah Pewter, married Jane Stokes, daughter of Robert Stokes and Susanna Judd, on 24 Nov 1800 at All Saints Church, Little Canfield, Essex.

John and Jane Byatt's children, baptised in Little Canfield, were:

1. Susanna Byatt bap. 11 Jun 1803
2. Jane Byatt bap. 9 Jun 1811
3. William Byatt bap. 6 Mar 1814
4. Elizabeth Byatt bap. 6 Oct 1816, died aged 31, in 1847 J Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 77, buried 8 Jun 1847

There are significant gaps between those births, so there may be others.

In 1841, John Byatt (65) Labourer, Jane Byatt (56), George Byatt (13) and Jane's widowed mother, Susan Stokes (78) were living in Hickeys Lane, Little Canfield. Living next door to them was son William Byatt. Son John Byatt was living in the household of John Rickett (4) at Goldings, Netteswell, Essex.

John Byatt died, aged 80, and was buried on 14 Jan 1858 in Little Canfield.

In 1861, Jane Byatt (79) was living at 6, High Canfield Lane, Little Canfield. 

Jane Byatt was buried on 10 Aug 1866, at All Saints, Little Canfield.

James Waterman and Tamar Hockley

James Waterman (bap. 5 Aug 1821 at Hatfield Broad Oak), son of Isaac Waterman and Jane Hasler, married Tamar Hockley, daughter of Daniel Hockley and Sophia Mason, on 22 Nov 1850 at All Saints, High Roding.

James and Tamar had two sons:

1. James Waterman b. 1852 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 303, bap. 30 Jan 1853 at All Saints Church, High Roding.
2. John Waterman b. 1857 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 319, bap. 25 Apr 1858 at All Saints Church, High Roding.

In 1861, James Waterman (40) Agricultural Labourer, Tamar Waterman (33), James Waterman (8) Scholar and John Waterman (3) were living in High Roden Street, High Roden (sic) (High Roding, obvs), Dunmow, Essex.

In 1871, living "In the Street, High Roothing, Dunmow, Essex" (hopefully, not too literally) were James Waterman (50) Groom, Tamar Waterman (45), James Waterman (18) Carpenter and John Waterman (13) Ag Lab.

In 1881, they had moved to Cannons Road (presumably Cannons Lane), Hatfield Broad Oak Aka Hatfield Regis, Dunmow, Essex. James Waterman (60) Groom; Fanny Waterman (55) from Great Dunmow (same age, I have no doubt this is Tamar) and John Waterman (23) Carpenter.

In 1891, on the Stortford Road, Little Canfield, Dunmow, Essex were James Waterman (69) General Labourer and Tamar Waterman (65).

Tamar Waterman died, aged 71, and was buried on 14 Mar 1898 in Great Dunmow (although the record isn't precise about which churchyard).

In 1901, James Waterman (79) Widower, Retired Groom from Hatfield Broad Oak, was living alone, still on the Stortford Road.

James Waterman died, aged 84, in 1905, in Great Dunmow.

John King and Dinah Doe

John King married Dinah Doe, daughter of Henry Doe and Elizabeth Stones, at St Martin's Church, Little Waltham, Essex on 20 Nov 1810.

John and Dinah had four children: 

1. John King bap. 7 Apr 1811 in Little Waltham, Essex
2. Elizabeth King bap. 21 Mar 1813 in Little Waltham, Essex
3. James King bap. 14 Jan 1816, died aged 1 and was buried on 20 May 1818, both events at St Mary & St Lawrence, Great Waltham, Essex
4. George King bap. 5 Jul 1818 in Great Waltham, Essex

Elizabeth's baptism record lists her father's occupation as Labourer.

There is a record of the burial of John King, aged 47 (b. 1790), in Great Waltham, Essex, on 22 Feb 1837, at the end of the reign of William IV.

In 1841, Diana (sic) King (50) Servant and her youngest son, George King (20) Servant - ages rounded - were employed in the household of Robert French (60), Farmer, in Boreham, Chelmsford, Essex.

In 1851, Diana King (64) widow, was still a General Servant in the household of Robert French (71) Farmer of 310 Acres, employing 12 Labourers, at Bulls Lodge, Boreham, Chelmsford, Essex (Grade II Listed Building).

In 1861, Diana King (73) widow, born in Great Canfield, Essex, was living at Wakerings Farm, Great Leighs, Essex with her daughter, Elizabeth King (46) and son George King (43) Agricultural Labourer.

Dinah King died, aged 83, in 1869 J Quarter in CHELMSFORD Volume 04A Page 111 and was buried in Great Leighs, Essex.

It is worth noting that in 1881, George King (65) Agricultural Labourer and his sister, Elizabeth King (68) were living together, both still single, in Little Waltham. Elizabeth King died, aged 88, in 1900 M Quarter in CHELMSFORD Volume 04A Page 383. George King died, aged 94, in 1915 M Quarter in CHELMSFORD Volume 04A Page 884. Neither ever married.

John Byatt and Sarah Pewter

John Byatt married Sarah Pewter (bap. 4 Apr 1754 at St Mary's Church, Ware, Hertfordshire) daughter of George and Grace Pewter, at St Mary's Church, Elsenham, Essex on 17 Nov 1775. Various records of the marriage spell his surname as Biatt and one calls him James, but as time goes by, the spelling Byatt becomes consistent and all other records are for John.

John and Sarah had nine children, baptised at St Mary's Church, Elsenham:

3. James Byat (sic) bap. 15 Mar 1780
4. Elizabeth Byatt bap. 10 Dec 1782 and again on 6 Mar 1783 (There isn't time for this to have been a different child, so I wonder if the first is a private baptism at home and the second in the church?)
5. Mary Byatt bap. 17 Jul 1785
6. Susan Byatt bap. 23 Nov 1788 (Died 31 Dec 1788)
7. George Byatt bap. 28 Feb 1790
8. Thomas Byatt bap. 26 Aug 1792
9. Sal Byatt bap. 3 Jul 1796 (Buried 8 May 1797) The baptism record for this child specifies the sex as male. On the burial, the child is described as a daughter. We may have found our first transgender relative.

Sarah Byatt died, at 69, and was buried on 8 Feb 1824, in Elsenham.

There is a death and burial of a John Byatt, aged 83 (b. 1757), in Royston, Hertfordshire, in 1840. If one of the children moved there, it might confirm if this is the correct record, but at first glance it appears possible.

Thomas William Colwill and Olivia Trevail

Thomas William Colwill (b. 1861 in Pimlico), son of Henry Colwill and Mary White, married Olivia Trevail (b. 1854 in Luxulyan), daughter of Joseph Trevail and Jane Rundle, at St George, Hanover Square on 13 Nov 1886. Witnesses were Kate Archer and Charles Trevail, the bride's sister and brother.

Thomas and Olivia had two children:

1. Harry George Colwill born 1888 in Pimlico
2. Elsie Mary Colwill born 1896 in Dalston

In 1871, at 20, was a kitchen maid in the household of Francis Gosling, Banker, at Wellbury House, Great Offley, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. (Goslings Bank was one of the banks merged into Barclays Bank in 1896)

In 1891, Thomas Colwill (29) Labourer joiner, living at Chichester Street, St George Hanover Square, with wife Olivia Colwill (33), son Harry (2), as well as four boarders: Charles Usher (26), Walter Wilham (35), Constance Wilham (25) and Ernest Aller (24). Thomas claimed to be from Taunton, Somerset. He wasn't. Following the clues, we discover that Thomas William Colwill, born in Pimlico in 1861, was the son of Henry Colwill, Joiner, and Mary White - who married in Wells, Somerset, in 1857. Thomas William Colwill was merely baptised at St Thomas, Wells, Somerset, in 1861. 

By 1901, Thomas Collwell (sic) (39) Builder's foreman, living at 24, Back Common Road, Lake Avenue Terrace, Chiswick, with Olivia (36), Harry (12) and Elsie (4), had remembered that he was born in Pimlico.

In 1911, Thomas Colwill (49) Foreman Joiner, Olivia Colwill (53), Harry Colwill (22) Joiner and Elsie Colwill (14), were living at 21 Slowmans Cottages, Ashingdon Road, Rochford, Essex. 

In 1921, T W [Thomas William] Colwill (59) Commercial Traveller; Olivia Colwill (63) and Elsie Mary Colwill (24) Clerk at the Ministry of Pensions, were living at 108, Oval Road, Croydon, Surrey.

Thomas W Colwill died, aged 69, in 1930, in Croydon.

Olivia Colwell died, aged 83, in 1937, also in Croydon.

Charles Young and Sarah Charlotte Hockley

Charles Young (b. 1857 S Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 309), son of Isaac Young and Emma Holgate, married Sarah Charlotte Hockley (b. 5 May 1860 in Great Dunmow), daughter of William Hockley and Charlotte Cock, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, on 9 Nov 1890.

Sarah Charlotte Hockley had an illegitimate child, Alice Jane Hockley b. 1879 M Qtr in DUNMOW Vol 04A 472, bap. 14 Sep 1879 at St Mary the Virgin - the baptism confirms Sarah was her mother. In 1881, Alice was staying with her grandparents, while Sarah C Hockley (20) was working as a Domestic Servant in the household of Amelia Hockley (32) widow, Lodging house keeper at Hockerill, Bishop Stortford, Hertfordshire. Alice Jane died, aged 8, in 1887 J Qtr in DUNMOW Vol 04A 314 and was buried on 7 May 1887.

Charles and Sarah Charlotte Young added three children:

In 1891, Charles Young (33) Agricultural Labourer and Sarah Charlotte Young (31), were living with Charles' widowed father, Isaac Young (68) and sister Lois Annie Young (26) in High Roding, Essex.

In 1901, Charles Young (42) Horse Keeper on Farm, Sarah Young (40), Alice (9), Arthur (7) and Charles (3) were living at Brands Farm, Great Dunmow.

In 1911, Charles Young (51) Horseman on Farm, Sarah Young (50), Arthur Young (17) also Horseman on Farm and Charles Young (13) General Labourer on Farm, were living at Brands Farm, Great Dunmow. Brands Farm, Ongar Road, Dunmow. Brands Farm House dates from the early 16th century and is Grade II* Listed. Alice Annie Young (19), meanwhile, was a Domestic Servant in the household of Harry Gowlett (53) Farmer at The Hall, Great Canfield. (The History of Great Canfield mentions The Hall.)

In 1921, Charles Young (62) Farm Foreman for H Gowlett Esq Farmer; Sarah Charlotte Young (61) were still at Brands Farm, Great Dunmow, with Claude Leslie Dodd (19) Railway Clerk from Stratford, Essex, as a visitor.

Charles Young died, aged 69, in 1926 D Quarter in DUNMOW.

In 1939, Sarah C Young was living, alone, at No 3 Sandpit Cottage, Bacon End, Great Canfield, Hope End Green. 

Sarah Charlotte Young died, aged 80, in 1941 J Quarter in DUNMOW Volume 04A Page 1674. The Essex Newsman of 10 May 1941 saw fit to report on the "SUDDEN DEATH - Mrs Sarah Charlotte Young, aged 80, was found dead in her bedroom. Death was due to natural causes."

• Alice Annie Young married Harry Crow in Dunmow, in 1915.
• Charles M Young married Ethel L Owers in Dunmow, in 1918.

George Hockley and Eliza Crow

George Hockley, son of Daniel Hockley and Sophia Mason, married Eliza Crow, daughter of William Crow and Judith Doe on 6 Nov 1843 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow. The marriage record shows that George, as well as both fathers' were labourers and witnesses were John and Jane Burton.

George and Eliza's children included:

On the baptism record for William, son of Eliza Crow, Single Woman, her address was listed as "Dunmow Union House", i.e. the workhouse. Listed as William Crow, at 19, he married as and thereafter used William Hockley. 

The mother's maiden name is listed on the birth registrations as CROW, except Daniel Hockley, with mother's maiden name listed as "Cross". 

1851 Census returns for both Great and Little Dunmow are missing.

George Hockley, Agricultural Labourer, died on 12 Jul 1857, aged just 42, at Halfway House, from the all-too-common cause, Phthisis (Tuberculosis (TB)) and was buried on 17 Jul 1857, in Great Dunmow.

Clearly Sarah Ann and Elizabeth were baptised after their father's death.

In 1861, Eliza Hockley (40), was living at Phreaders Green, Great Dunmow with sons, William Crow (19) and Daniel Hockley (14), both Agricultural Labourers presumably supporting their mother and their younger siblings: Elizabeth Hockley (12), James Hockley (10), Emma Hockley (8), Lucy Hockley (7), Charles Hockley (6), Alice Hockley (5) and Sarah (3). Tamar Hockley (16) was then a House maid in the employ of Francis Berrington Crittall (36) 'Ironmonger' (founder of Crittall Windows) in Bank Street, Braintree. 

In 1871, at High Street, Park Corner, Great Dunmow, there were Eliza Hockley (39) - erm, nope, she was 50 - Charwoman, with Charles Hockley (16) Farm Lab and Sarah Hockley (12) Domestic Servant. Daniel Hockley (21) Groom, was living at The Cottage, Great Canfield, Dunmow; Elizabeth Hockley (20ish), who had given birth to an illegitimate daughter, Ada Elizabeth Hockley (1) (b. 1869 D Quarter in ISLINGTON, bap. 1 May 1873, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow), were listed as Inmates of Dunmow Union Workhouse; Emma Hockley (19) was General servant to Samuel Knight, Architect at Maitland Park Villas, St Pancras, London. Lucy Hockley (19) was a Housemaid at 38 Upper Park Road, Belsize Park; while Alice Hockley (14) was a domestic servant to William Stacey, Photographer and Florist, in The Causeway, Great Dunmow.

Eliza Hockley, daughter of William Crow, married William Bloomfield, widower, son of Robert Bloomfield, in Felsted, on 20 Apr 1872.

(It hasn't been possible to find William Bloomfield's baptism, however, he'd previously married Mary Ann Harsant (bap. 1 Apr 1821 in Peasenhall, Suffolk), in 1839, in Blything registration district. In 1841, William Bloomfield (20) Blacksmith, Mary Ann (20) and their daughter Lucy (1) were in the High Street, Moulsham, Chelmsford. In 1851, William Bloomfield (32) Blacksmith, with Mary Ann (30) and Lucy (11) were back in Stoven, Blything, Suffolk. In 1861, William Bloomfield (43) Jobbing smith (with wife listed as Maria and daughter as Lizzie: probably misheard) were living at Bridge End Road, Great Bardfield, Dunmow. And by 1871, William Bloomfield (50) Blacksmith, Mary Ann (49) and Lucy (29) had moved to Church End, Great Dunmow. Then Mary Ann Bloomfield died, aged 49, and was buried, on 26 Aug 1871, at Holy Cross, Felsted. Lucy Bloomfield just disappears.)

Charles Hockley, then 23, Groom from Great Dunmow, Essex, enlisted in the 20th Hussars at London, on 2 Jul 1877. At that time being 5ft 6in, with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He transferred to the 10th Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own) on 31 Oct 1879, which ultimately meant he saw action at the Battle of El Teb, 29 Feb 1884 (First and Second Battles of El Teb) during the Mahdist War in what was then Mahdist Sudan. This action earned him the Sudan Medal 1884 (Egypt Medal) with clasp El Teb, as well as a Khedive Star 1884. From 11 Dec 1879 to 18 Feb 1884, Charles had been in the East Indies, first in Rawalpindi and then Mian Mir: "The four-week march was arduous and hampered by lack of healthy camels. They had to cross the rivers Jhelum and Chenab, and camped several days at Shaddera near Lahore." In November, they were ordered to re-locate again, to Lucknow, where the 10th were located near the ruined Dilkusha Palace. "There was a large European population at Lucknow during the cooler months so that a good social life was enjoyed." [Source] As proof of that, in Nov 1881, in Lucknow, Charles was treated for a dose of that well-known soldiers' "recreational hazard", Gonorrhea. The 10th travelled to Sudan aboard HMS Jumna 1884 and disembarked on 19 Feb 1884, where Charles' record locates him until 21 Apr 1884. Amongst sprains and dislocations, Charles also suffered Jaundice in 1879, ague (malaria or another illness involving fever and shivering) on no less than four occasions in 1880 and 1881 and Dysentery while in Suakin in 1884. Charles' next of kin is listed as his mother, Eliza Bloomfield at Glengall Road, Poplar - the address of her eldest son, William Hockley (born Crow). He left the army in 1885.

In 1881, William Bloomfield (62) Blacksmith, born in Dunwich, Suffolk, and Eliza Bloomfield (55), were at Cottage Farm, Banister Green, Felstead. Elizabeth Hockley (28), Ada Hockley (12) and Joseph James Hockley (0) - born on 7 Mar 1881, Elizabeth's second illegitimate child - were all Pauper Inmates at the Union Workhouse, Great Dunmow. (Joseph James Hockley was baptised on 16 Jun 1882 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, with their address given at that time as Dunmow Union Workhouse Felsted.)

In 1891, William (73) and Eliza Bloomfield (64) were at Cock Green, Felsted. Elizabeth Hockley (38) Pauper inmate was once more at Dunmow Union Workhouse, with son, [Joseph] James Hockley (10). Charles Hockley (35) was working as a Valet and residing in Arlington Road, St Pancras, London.

William Bloomfield died, aged 76, in 1893 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 407. 

In 1901, Eliza Bloomfield (it claims she was 75) widow living on children, was still living in Felsted. Elizabeth Hockley (49) was Housekeeper to Walter Howland at Silverleys, Straits Lane, Felstead, while Ada Hockley (32) born in Islington was back in The Dunmow Union Workhouse as a Pauper Inmate; Charles Hockley (46) from Great Dunmow, Essex was a Boarder in the household of Robert Bailey a Cadet servant (military academy) at 10, James Street, Woolwich, London. Charles was working as an Arsenal labourer (Royal Arsenal, Woolwich). (Robert Bailey, from Huddersfiled, Yorkshire had served, from 1867 to 1888, in the 109th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Infantry).

Charles Hockley died, at 50, in 1904 in the London Borough of Southwark.

Eliza Bloomfield died in 1906 M Quarter in BILLERICAY Volume 04A Page 319, with her age estimated as 84. She will have been 86.

In 1911, Elizabeth Hockley (64) and Ada Hockley (43) Domestic servants were once again Inmates at the Dunmow Union Workhouse. This is the last record that can be found for either of them.

John Easter and Edith Hockley

John Easter (b. 1859 in Dunmow, Essex), son of Charles Easter and Jemima Thurley, married Edith Hockley, daughter of William Hockley and Charlotte Cock, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow on 5 Nov 1887. 

John and Edith Easter had eight children:

In 1891, with their address listed just as Cottage, Street, High Roothing (High Roding), were John Easter (31) Agricultural Labourer, Edith Easter (29), Edith Jane Easter (2) and Alfred John Easter (0).

In 1901, living at The Wantz, High Roding, Dunmow, Essex (Wantz Cottage is a Grade II Listed Building today), were John Easter (41) Agricultural Labourer, Edith Easter (39), Edith J Easter (12), Alfred J Easter (10), Annie A Easter (7), William C Easter (5), Elizabeth A Easter (4) and Mabel M Easter (0).

In 1911, still in The Street, High Roding, we find John Easter (51) Horseman on farm, Edith Easter (49) Domestic; Alfred J Easter (20) Blacksmith journeyman; William C Easter (15) Farm boy; Elizabeth A Easter (14) General domestic servant; Mabel M Easter (10), Stanley J Easter (7) and Leonard F Easter (6), the last three still at school. That year, Edith Jane Easter (22) was a General domestic servant in the household of Arthur William Catling at 'Gwendon' Torrington Park, N Finchley, Friern Barnet, Middlesex, while Annie Adelaide Easter (17) was employed as a General domestic servant by Arthur Carwithen at 29 Macdonald Road, Friern Barnet N, Friern Barnet, Middlesex.

In 1921, still living in High Roding, were John Easter (61) Farm Labourer; Edith Easter (59), Mabel Easter (21) General Domestic Servant; Stanley Easter (18) Horseman; and Leonard Easter (16) Farm Labourer.

John Easter of The Street, High Roding, died on 13 Nov 1930, aged 69, and was buried on 18 Nov 1930 at All Saints Church, High Roding.

In 1939, the widowed Edith Easter was living with her son-in-law Allan G Bacon, married to daughter Annie Adelaide, at 13 School Villas, Dunmow.

Edith Easter died on 15 Apr 1947, aged 86, and was buried, on 19 Apr 1947, at All Saints with her husband where Essex Monumental Inscriptions say they have "a pointed top headstone with flat mantle top shoulders forming side panels with roses in relief, kerb with two corner posts."

Abraham Shelford and Caroline Kitty Collin

Abraham Shelford (b. 28 May 1823, in Great Easton, Essex), son of William Shelford and Ann Stanes, married Caroline Kitty Collin in the Essex village of Tilty, on 31 Oct 1846, with whom he had a daughter, Mary Ann Shelford, b. 1846 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 88, bap. 17 Jan 1847 at St Mary the Virgin, Tilty. However, Caroline Shelford died, aged 27, in 1854 J Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 219 and was buried, on 11 May 1854, at St John & St Giles, Great Easton. Their daughter, Mary Ann Shelford died, at 15, in 1862 M Quarter in CLERKENWELL Volume 01B Page 424 and was buried, on 5 May 1862, in Hackney, Middlesex.

Abraham Shelford then married Sophia Mason, daughter of Samuel Mason and Amelia Baker, in the 4th quarter of 1859, in Kensington, London.

Abraham and Sophia added three children:

In 1861, Abraham Shelford (35) Deputy turncock n r co and Sophia Shelford (34) Deputy turncock's wife - such was the importance of the office - were living at 27, Rodney Street, Clerkenwell, London. Abraham's daughter Mary, listed as 16, was a Domestic servant in the household of William Paton, Upholsterer at 88, Pentonville Road, St James, Clerkenwell.

Turncocks were an official employed to turn on the water for the mains supply. This was done on a schedule: in those times, the water supply was not running all of the time.

In 1871, Abraham Shelford (44) was living at 43 Gifford Street, St Leonard, Shoreditch. On this census, his occupation is listed as Labourer, but I'm not sure I trust its veracity. His place of birth has been written as Great Eastern instead of Great Easton, which they've obviously confused with the SS Great Eastern, because, then someone has added 'At Sea' on the end of it, which is all that got transcribed. :) With him were wife 'Sarah' Shelford (44) from Broxted, Essex and William Shelford (9) and Alice Shelford (7), both born in Pentonville, Middlesex.

Pentonville, a sub-district in Clerkenwell, has a fascinating history.

In 1881, living at 23, Mary Street, Shoreditch, London, were Abraham Shelford (56) this time his occupation is listed as Waterman, but I'm certain, given his history, that this is as in someone who works for the water company, not the ancient waterways taxi driver. With him were 'Sarah ' Shelford (54), William Shelford (19) Carpenter and Alice Shelford (17) Laundress.

Then Sophia Shelford died, aged 56, in 1882 M Quarter in Shoreditch.

In 1891, Abraham Shelford (69) Water turncock, Widower, was living at 69 Tottenham Road, Hackney, London with son, William Shelford (29) Water inspector; Alice Shelford (27) Daughter-in-law and grandchildren: Edith (7), William J (5) and Ernest Shelford (3). (William Shelford married his 1st cousin, Alice Mason, daughter of John Mason and Mary Ann Turner in 1883.)

In 1892, Abraham Shelford married Sarah Maria Wilcox in Hackney. 

Abraham Shelford died, aged 73, in 1897, in Islington, London.

Sarah Maria Shelford remarried, in Bethnal Green, in 1898.

George Prior (bap. 24 Dec 1820 in Great Dunmow), son of William Prior and Sarah Shed, married Mary Hockley, daughter of Daniel Hockley and Sophia Mason at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton, on 31 Oct 1845.

George and Mary had five children:

1. William Prior b. 1848 J Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 74, bap. 5 May 1848 at St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton
2. Sarah Prior b. 1849 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 75, bap. 18 Dec 1849 at St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton
3. Emma Prior b. 1851 M Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 12 Page 91, bap. 23 Feb 1851 at St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton
4. George Prior b. 1853 D Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 273, bap. 10 Nov 1853 at St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton
5. Edith Prior b. 1856 S Quarter in DUNMOW UNION Volume 04A Page 299, bap. 27 Jul 1857 at St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton. Died aged 1, in 1858 M Quarter in DUNMOW UNION  Volume 04A Page 262 and buried on 17 Mar 1858 at St Mary the Virgin, Little Easton

On Edith's baptism, her father's occupation is listed as Gardener.

In 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891, the family lived in Park Road, Little Easton. They look to have lived at the same address for almost 50 years, which is rare and suggests also that George had steady employment from one employer, rather than moving from farm to farm yearly as many did.

In 1861, George Prior (40) Garden labourer, Mary Prior (36), William Prior (13) Farm work; Sarah Prior (11), Emma Prior (10) and George Prior (7).

In 1871, George Prior (50) Gardener, Mary Prior (45) and just George Prior (17) Coal Porter left at home.

In 1881, just George Prior (60) Garden labourer and Mary Prior (58).

In 1891, George Prior (69) Garden labourer with Mary Prior (65).

George Prior died, aged 72, and was buried on 28 Mar 1893 at Little Easton.

In 1901, Mary Prior (79) Widow, was living at the Alms Houses, Little Easton.

There had been Almshouses, near the church-yard, built by Lord Maynard, in about 1716, for the residence of four poor widows to be appointed by his heirs. The current Grade II listed former almshouses, were built in 1895. The date and a 'W' are placed centrally. The 'W' perhaps stands for Warwick, as apparently Frances, the Countess of Warwick, had them built. By 1902 they were accommodating six old people - one of whom was Mary Prior. Perhaps George Prior had worked for the Countess in the gardens of Easton Lodge. 

Mary Prior died, aged 85 and was buried, on 28 May 1907, at Little Easton.

Samuel John Regelous (b. 15 Jul 1848 in Saffron Walden, Essex), son of John Regelous, Policeman, and Sarah Pilstow, married Emma Byatt (b. 1847), daughter of William Byatt and Ann Poole, on 28 Oct 1866 at St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden - the largest non-cathedral church in Essex.

Samuel and Emma had four children, but only one survived infancy:

2. Charles John Regelous b. 19 Oct 1868 D Quarter in SAFFRON WALDEN Volume 04A Page 403, bap. 12 Mar 1871 in Saffron Walden.
3. Emma Elizabeth Regelous b. 1870 J Quarter in SAFFRON WALDEN Volume 04A Page 415, bap. 12 Mar 1871 in Saffron Walden. There was an Emily Elizabeth Regelous buried on 13 Aug 1872 in Hackney, Middlesex. (There was family in Mile End to place them in the area).
4. Henry John Regelous b. 1871 S Quarter in SAFFRON WALDEN Vol 04A Page 393. Listed as John Henry Regelous died, aged 2, in Kensington, in 1874 J Quarter in KENSINGTON Vol 01A Page 51.

In 1871, in Saffron Walden were Samuel Jn Regelous (22) Warehouseman; Emma (23) from Little Canfield; Charles J Regelous, Son was listed as 2 months (he'll have been 3 years) and Sarah E Regelous was listed as 4. I have no explanation why they listed Sarah who had died in the first three months of her life, but not listed Emma Elizabeth who'll have been a year old.

In 1881, at 53, Portland Road, Kensington, London, were Samuel Regelans (sic) (39) Carman; Emma Regelans (sic) (33) and Charles Regelans (sic) (12). 

In 1891, Samuel J Regelous (43) Servant Gardener and Emma Regelous (43) were living in Underhill Road, Camberwell, Southwark, London with Arthur Ralfe (15) Grocers Porter, who was listed as Adopted. Various later records for Arthur using the surname Regelous, give a date of his Immigration into Canada as being somewhere between 1891 and 1895.

Charles John Regelous married Margaret Rolls on 5 Nov 1896 in Carbery, Manitoba, Canada. In 1891, Margaret, with birth year listed as 1871, had been living with Thomas Rolls (b. 1864 in England) in Marquette, Manitoba, Canada, with their two children, Bessie Rolls (3) and Joseph Rolls (4m). I haven't found a birth record for Elizabeth (Bessie) Rolls in 1888, however, the birth record for Joseph H Kellaway Rolls on 16 Feb 1891 in North Norfolk, Manitoba, Canada lists his mother as Margaret Stephenson, his father's name is left blank and his parent's marriage status given as unknown. I haven't found any record of a marriage, anywhere, between a Thomas Rolls and a Margaret Stephenson, so it may be that the couple were never married. 

Charles and Margaret had a further two sons:

1. Charles William Regelous b. 23 Aug 1897 in North Norfolk, Manitoba
2. Edward Samuel Regelous b. 22 Apr 1899 in North Norfolk, Manitoba

On the birth record for Charles William, his mother is listed as Margaret Stephenson and this time, it is specified that his parents were married.

In 1901, in Macdonald, Manitoba, Canada, we find Sam J Regelous, Head; Emma Regelous, Wife; Charles J Regelous, Son; Margaret Regelous, Daughter-in-Law; William Regelous, Grandson; Edward Regelous, Grandson; Bessie Rowls (sic) (10), Lodger and Albert Rowls (sic) (6) Lodger. On the 1901 Census, Margaret's year of birth is given as 1866, which is more reasonable, but either date, with only the information that she was born in England, it has not been possible to identify her origins. Meanwhile, Arthur Regelous (24), also in Macdonald, Manitoba, was a Lodger in the household of Thomas R McCartney (whose sister, Evelyn, Arthur later married.)

In 1906, Charles J. Rylous (sic) (39) was living in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada, with wife Margaret (36), Bessie Rolls (17) Daughter; Joseph Rolls (15) Son; Willie Rylous (sic) (8) Son; Edward Rylous (sic) (6) Son and R Davis (22) from England, Boarder. While Arthur Regelous (listed as 39) was also living in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada with wife Evelyn M (formerly Evelyn Matilda McCartney) (24) and their family.

In 1911, Samuel Rebelous (sic) and Emma Rebelous (sic) were living in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada with Albert Rolls who is listed as being born in 1873, and as Adopted. Also in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada, were Charles Regelous, Margaret Regelous, William Regelous [Charles William], Son; Edward Regelous, Son; Elizabeth Rolls, Step-Daughter; Joseph Rolls, Step-Son, along with seven male lodgers. Arthur Regelous was living in Winnipeg with Evelyn (30), and three of their children.

Emma Regelous died on 15 Apr 1912 and is buried at Sidney Cemetery, Sidney, Manitoba, Canada.

Samuel John Regelous remarried on 7 Jul 1914 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to an Elizabeth Elliot.

Charles John Regelous died at 46, on 20 Sep 1915 and is buried at Sidney Cemetery, Sidney, Manitoba, Canada.

In 1916, Samuel J Regelous (67) Widowed (again?), was living in North Norfolk, Neepawa, Manitoba. Margaret Regelous (46) Widow, was living in Tupper Street, Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada with Bessie Regelous (26) Daughter; William Regelous (18) Son; Edward Regelous (16) Son and a Lidia Setter (22) Lodger. Arthur Regelous (39) was living at 412 Victor St, Winnipeg Centre, Manitoba with is wife Evelyn (34) and four children.

In 1926, Samuel John Regelous (78), father, was living in the household of Arthur Regelous (49), in Springfield, Manitoba, Canada. Margaret's son, Joseph Roles (sic) (listed as 28) was living in Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada with wife Viola Doris (26) and son William Joseph (1). 

Samuel John Regelous died, aged 84, on 21 Aug 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and is also buried at Sidney Cemetery, Sidney, Manitoba, Canada.

Grandsons, Charles William Regelous died on 3 Apr 1942 and is buried at Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Edward Samuel Regelous died on 20 Dec 1944 and is buried with his brother at Brookside Cemetery. 

Adopted son, Arthur Regelous died on 18 Feb 1949 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Joseph Kellaway Rolls died on 26 Nov 1955, aged 64, and is buried at Carberry Plains Cemetery, Carberry, Manitoba, Canada.
