Thomas Chapman and Lucy Hockley

Thomas Chapman, who according to the marriage certificate was son of John Chapman, Farm Bailiff, married Lucy Hockley, daughter of George Hockley and Eliza Crow, at Holy Cross Church, Felsted on 29 Feb 1876. Thomas was then resident in Camlin Town (I'm sure they mean Camden Town) and in 1871, Lucy Hockley (19) had been a Housemaid in nearby Belsize Park.

Thomas and Lucy had one daughter:

1. Ellen Eliza Hockley Chapman b. 1877 M Quarter in PANCRAS Vol 01B Page 201. Died in 1877 S Quarter in PANCRAS Vol 01B Page 80

There were no further children to this couple in Britain in the subsequent 20 years; I was also unable to find them on any census and, without any clues to Thomas' date or place of birth, no idea yet where next to look.

Walter Robert Thomas Parry and Emma Hockley

Walter Robert Thomas Parry (bap. 16 Apr 1851 at St Mary's Church, Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire), son of Walter George Parry and Annie Arnott, married Emma Hockley, daughter of George Hockley and Eliza Crow, in the 4th quarter of 1872 at Holy Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill (Haverstock).

The year before, Emma was working as a General servant to Samuel Knight, Architect at Maitland Park Villas, St Pancras. Walter R Parry (20) Carpenter & Joiner, had been Lodging at Collyer Cottages, High Street, Camberwell.

Walter and Emma had one daughter:

1. Annie Emma Parry b. 1873 M Qtr in ST PANCRAS Vol 01B Page 178, who died, aged 5, in 1878 S Qtr in PANCRAS Vol 01B Page 111

In 1881, Walter R Parry (28) Joiner from Gloucestershire, Emma Parry (28) from Essex were at 152, St Pauls Road, St Pancras, London with Walter's aunt, Elizabeth White (56) Widow from Somerset living with them.

Then Emma Parry died, aged 37, in 1889 S Quarter in Cheltenham.

Walter Robert Thomas Parry remarried, in 1892, to Sarah Ann Burrows, in Northleach, Gloucestershire.

And went on to have two further daughters:

The family were living in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, in 1901 and 1911. 

Walter Robert Thomas Parry of 3 Daisy Bank, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, died, aged 77, on 24 Jul 1928. Probate was granted to Clara Daisy Williams (wife of Francis Herbert Williams) and Frances Lily Hatherall (wife of John William Hatherall), his two daughters from his second marriage.

Elizabeth Hockley (b. 1847), daughter of George Hockley and Eliza Crow gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Ada Elizabeth Hockley in 1869 D Quarter in ISLINGTON, but in 1871, both Elizabeth Hockley (20ish) and Ada Hockley (1) were listed as Inmates of Dunmow Union Workhouse. Ada Elizabeth Hockley was baptised, on 1 May 1873, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow.

In 1881, Elizabeth Hockley (28), Ada Hockley (12) and Joseph James Hockley (0) - born on 7 Mar 1881, Elizabeth's second illegitimate child - were all Pauper Inmates at the Union Workhouse, Great Dunmow. Joseph James Hockley was baptised on 16 Jun 1882 at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, with their address given at that time as Dunmow Union Workhouse Felsted.

In 1891, Elizabeth Hockley (38) Pauper inmate was once more at Dunmow Poor Law Union Workhouse, as was her son, listed as James Hockley (10). 

In 1901, Elizabeth Hockley (49) was Housekeeper in the household of Walter Howland at Silverleys, Straits Lane, Felstead. Ada Hockley (32) born in Islington was back in The Dunmow Union Workhouse as a Pauper Inmate.

In 1911, both mother and daughter, Elizabeth Hockley (64) and Ada Hockley (43) Domestic servants were once again Inmates at the Dunmow Union Workhouse. This is the last record that can be found for either of them.

Joseph James Hockley (b. 7 Mar 1881), illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hockley, married Nellie Radley (b. 19 Apr 1880 in Felsted), daughter of Jonah Radley and Jane Digby, on 2 Jan 1904 at Holy Cross Church, Felsted.

Joseph James and Nellie had six children, but tragically, only two survived:

Annie May and Neville Frederick, clearly, were twins.

Joseph James Hockley, as James Hockley, from Felsted, had enlisted in the Coldstream Guards on 20 Jun 1898. He said he was 18 years and 3 months old, so he'd added a year. He was a tall lad at 5ft 9in, weighing 133 lbs with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. The workhouse school had just about taught him to sign his name. In 1901, J Hockley (20) from Felsted, Essex, Pte foot guards, was at Pirbright Camp in Pirbright, Surrey. 

James Hockley served in Gibraltar in 1899 and twice in South Africa, once in 1900 and again in 1902, during the Second Boer War, for which he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal and 5 clasps including Diamond Hill, JOHANNESBURG (Doornkop), CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE and SOUTH AFRICA 1902. James Hockley was transferred to the Army Reserve on 5 Aug 1902 and discharged from the reserve on 18 Feb 1910 on promotion to the rank of Sergeant of Police. 

In 1911, Joseph Hockley (30) Metropolitan police sergeant, Nellie Hockley (30), Eleanor Hockley (6) and Doris Hockley (4) were living at 5 Weymouth Terrace, Acton Lane, Willesden. 

Joseph James Hockley died, aged 38, in 1919 M Quarter in STEYNING.

In 1939, Nellie Hockley, widow, lived at 46 Marmion Road, Hove.

Nellie Hockley of 46 Marmion Road, Hove, died on 3 Aug 1958 at 26 Tugela Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire, leaving her effects to Doris Rose Slade (wife of Samuel James Slade) and Leslie William Terry Judd chartered secretary. 

(Eleanor Lottie Hockley married Leslie William Terry Judd in 1929, in Steyning, Sussex, while Doris Rose Hockley married Samuel James Slade in 1948, in Chippenham, Wiltshire. Uncertain if either couple had children).

Daniel Hockley (b. 1845), son of George Hockley and Eliza Crow, married Sarah Skinner (b. 1855), daughter of Samuel Skinner and Margaret Smith (née Harrison), on 23 Dec 1876, at St Mary's Church, Great Canfield. 

Daniel and Sarah Hockley had nine children:

In 1881, calling himself Daniel George Hockley (32) Coachman was living at Fitzjohns, Great Canfield, Dunmow. He didn't have that middle name, but it was his father's name and this is the 2nd time this week I've found someone adding their father's name as a middle name, so I wonder if it was a 'thing'? And it was useful later on. Fitzjohns, it appears from the census schedules, is next door to the cottage he lived in ten years previously, so he may have been with the same employer. With him were wife Sarah Hockley (25), George Arthur Hockley (3), Beatrice Margaret (1) and Samuel Frederick Hockley (0).

Sarah Hockley died, aged 33, and was buried, also at St Mary's, Great Canfield, six days before her last child, on 21 Feb 1890. It probably doesn't require a medical degree to work out what contributed to her cause of death.

In 1891, Daniel Hockley (40) Coachman, Widower, was still living at Fitzjohns, Lodge Gates, Great Canfield, Dunmow, Essex with George A Hockley (13), Betsy M Hockley (11), Frederick Hockley (10), Rose Hockley (8), Herbert Hockley (6), Ernest Hockley (5) and Amy Hockley (4). Meanwhile, Christopher Hockley (2) was being looked after by his aunt, Mary Ann Hockley (wife of Daniel's elder brother, William Hockley) in Poplar, London.

Unsurprisingly, Daniel Hockley then remarried, to Mary Ann Hurry (b. 31 Jul 1861 in Depwade, Norfolk), daughter of Samuel Hurry and Jane Moyes, also at St Mary's, Great Canfield, on 25 Jul 1891. At the time of the 1891 census (5 Apr), Mary Ann Hurry (29) had been employed as a General servant in the household of a William J Peacock at Claremont, Lewisham Park, Lewisham, so one can't help being curious about how their paths would have crossed.

Daniel and Mary Ann added a further three children:

In 1901, Daniel Hockley (49) had moved to Near Pennyfeathers, High Roding, where he was employed as a Coachman gardener, living with Mary A Hockley (39), Ernest Hockley (15) Farmer's servant; Amy Hockley (14), Christopher Hockley (12), Daniel S Hockley (7) and Alice J Hockley (3).

In 1911, living at Round Bush Green, Aythorpe Roding, were Daniel Hockley (65) Stockman, Mary Ann Hockley (51), Daniel Samuel Hockley (17) Labourer; Alice Jane Hockley (13) and Stanley Hockley (8) At School.

Daniel George Hockley, of Round Bush Green, Aythorpe Roding, died aged 73, and was buried on 10 Sep 1918 at St Mary's Church, Great Canfield. 

In 1939, Mary Ann Hockley, widow, lived at 4 Round Bush Villas, Braintree with son Stanley Hockley and his wife, Emily, as well as son Daniel S Hockley.

Mary Ann Hockley died, aged 81, and was buried on 27 Aug 1942 at St Mary's Church, Aythorpe Roding.
